How to Take a San Pedro Cactus Cutting [Cactus Cutting & Propagation Basics]
Thanks for all the tips! I have one question. How about growing a san pedro cactus from a seedling? I bought one from a tent at a phish show yesterday. This seedling is about 3/4 of an inch tall. I planted it upright in a well-draining pot, with cactus soil. My question is, should a newly transplanted seedling of that size be watered right away when planted? Or should it be dry while establishing roots? It's tiny, and I assume that means it's more delicate, so I want to make sure I do it right so it survives and grows!
Thanks for your easy listening too voice. I would like to know how to use this plant cuttings to produce more cacti
Glad you enjoyed the video! We have a couple of videos on taking cuttings for propagation, grafting, and planting cactus cuttings on our channel if you would like to take a look! :)
Today?
This was back in May, at the time of posting! :)
What's the rule of thumb on pot size, based on plant size?
We try to recommend using as small of a pot as possible while still being able to maintain stability for the cactus, and accounting for future growth. Generally speaking, an 8" diameter pot with capacity for 3-5 gallons of soil medium will be enough for a 12"-30" tall San Pedro with a few offsets for a few years. Any bigger than that and you'll want te 12" - 15 gallon sizes to ensure you're not top heavy and tipping over with a larger plant. It's not an exact rule of thumb, but usually the plant is good at naturally limiting itself to the container. If you need it to stay smaller, go smaller!
Just received my 🌵, thanks so much guys. Pure joy?
That's great to hear, hope your cactus thrives!
Thank you for a very good video!

@@SanPedroSource your welcome, your site is the best! Is there a timeframe as to when more Peruvian torch will be available? I’m looking at add a coupe to my little collection
We added some cuttings today that should be available, but it's hard to say when we get more as they can become available pretty sporadically.
@@SanPedroSource thank you! I’ll be checking frequently

I didn't know it comes from the peruviuan torch
It's actually a mutation of the Bolivian Torch! Crazy we know :D
I live in Florida, have many many cactus around the house. Never did it proffesionaly, even my neighbords have huge cactus from my main cactus plant. BUT, a simple question, is there a special composte to grow cactus? I always did it putting pieces on the ground, here in Fl. we have a lot of sand. Now Im planing to remove 2 huges plants, ( non cactus) and grow at least 4 pieces on each side of the front yard as a project. Any special compost? Or keep doing what im doing just put cactus on the ground? Att: some die😭 80% grow
We suggest a ratio of roughly 40-50% percent inorganic material like perlite or horticultural pumice to organic material such as peat moss and coco coir so that the water drains well. A well draining soil mixture, ensuring the cut end of the cactus is callused (if you're not using a rooted cutting), and not watering for the first 2-4 weeks will really help! No special compost is needed, though rooting hormone can help. Let us know if that answers your question :)
BEST VIDEO EVER, THANKS...!!!
Glad it helped!
Hi. I've bought Peyote seedlings and instead of replanting them, I would like to know if I can graft them onto San Pedro rootstock. Its the start of winter here now, so will it still work if I do it now? They are a year old.
It definitely is possible but it's recommended to do this during warmer seasons, as both cacti will be actively growing. If you can do this indoors with controlled light and temperature, that can help!
The first looks like T. Scopulacola and the second looks like a T. Peruvianus.
Well done!
Ever dug a star pattern like the actual cactus to plant in? Have seen some great results in doing so when planting
No but that's a really interesting idea!
@@SanPedroSource I will send you some info on your instagram account
I live in Germany and want to have one san pedro in my garden. Which one is suitable? ( min -5°) How can I buy one from your shop?
Hey there! Unfortunately we do not ship outside of the United States at this time. If you're planning on getting a San Pedro for your garden make sure to protect it from colder temps by using frost blankets or bringing it indoors or to a greenhouse (if possible). Trichocereus Terscheckii / Argentine Saguaro are a more cold tolerant option but you'll still need to be careful.
@SanPedroSource Great, Thanks for your reply 😍
I'm wondering how free draining the surrounding clay is, won't it trap water around the roots without more drainage? Also are a few days between planting and watering enough time for the roots to heal over and avoid rotting?
You should *always* wait about 14 days to water after repotting/damaging roots to avoid root rot. Generally the soil should be well draining but I guess they can adapt to various circumstances. Trichocereus are very resilient plants. Some would even say they're hard to kill.
Since we backfilled the hole we dug with plenty of well draining soil, the root system will be centered in that and do just fine (even when the natural soil around it is full of clay that doesn't drain well). And yes! We recommend waiting 1-2 weeks to water to allow the cactus time to acclimate to the planting, moisture in the soil used, etc.
@SanPedroSource Thanks, I was thinking that the surrounding clay would act like a seal, so with enough rain and nowhere to drain to, the hole containing the cactus root ball could fill up and stay wet for a while
Awesome video. I absolutely love this store. I've purchased several cacti and have been happy every time. 🌵👍🏻
We really appreciate it, thank you! (we removed that other guy's comments - they seemed a bit aggressive 😅)
Supercool, We don't need negative vibes ☮,people should do what they want and not bother others. I will look forward to the next cacti that I purchase from your amazing store ❤
Wish i would live in a climate zone where it is possible to plant these beauties in the ground. 💚 Nice work on the video! ❤
Thank you! We are very grateful to live in southern California 🙏
A slightly more refined approach might be to ensure that there is at least one areole left behind to encourage pupping…
Plenty left over!
Question: what happens to the vascular bundle when log growing a san pedro? I see new offssets coming from all the lenght of the plant so I wonder how the horizontaly oriented vascular bundle can bring nutrients from the rotts below it to the offsets above.
Great question! The vascular bundle will connect to any offsets regardless of the orientation of the plant.
Do PC san pedro flower?
Yes! They bloom large white flowers with white hairs.
I love your cactus. Last year I bought 8 BTM's and there all producing puppies. Thank you so much.
Thank you that is so awesome to hear!
Absolutely amazing bloom ❤🐈⬛👍🌵 I'm obsessed with your store. I have several perfect ones from you. Nice Music 🎶 ☮
That's awesome, thank you! Hope that your cacti are doing well.
How fast do they grow per year usually? I know it depends but just wanted an estimate
Up to 2-3 feet on average with good conditions and proper care
Beautiful
The blooms have been gorgeous this year so far!
I have just saved the tip from an overwatered cactus at work and hoping it lives.
Best of luck! Feel free to email us if you have any questions.
Are any rooting hormone powder needed for the mother or prop where the cuts occurred?
Good question! Rooting hormone is great for encouraging root development in the cuttings (make sure to let them callus over first), but isn't meant for the mother plant.

Wow beautiful Cactus Like 30 My friend, have a good day~~ Have a good relationship~

When to repot
Hello! Are you asking when a good time to repot is?
Can the San Pedro cactus 🌵 resist snow and ice? I want a few tall columnular cactus for my yard but don't want anything that won't resist snow and ice.
While the San Pedro can tolerate some cold, it is maybe not the best choice for areas with prolonged snowfall and freezing temperatures. You can, however, use protective measures like frost blankets to provide an extra layer of insulation, trapping heat from the ground and helping to keep the cactus above freezing temperatures. Just make sure to cover before frost hits.
You explanation was clear and simple. I'm confident I will have success hereafter. Thank you.
Thank you very much and best of luck with your cactus endeavors! :)
Very nice! I have 2 with fuzzy buds, not as far along as those 🌵👍 I'm a repeat customer and love every cactus that I have purchased from you 🌵👍
That's so great to hear!

Groovy rib shifting on that last pop quiz subject. Should immediately be crossed with the domino cactus.
Oooo now that would be something!
Is this sausage cactus czcams.com/video/52rN9Tsl89s/video.html and can you cross with them? Do they flower?
It's a Serra-blue Peruvianis and once it flowers you can cross pollinate them!
i made a graft of a baby peyote on a san pedro, on another one i grafted the root of the peyote, but its very difficult to make it stay with a bandage or anything (because the root is very irregular) so i just left it there... is there a problem on not "securing" it? its very small and doesnt seem like its gonna fall or anything.... hope my question makes sense
You will need enough pressure to secure the union between the scion & rootstock. Not sure if that’s what your question is about but hope this helps!
What soil you use?
We recommend a 50% organic mix and 50% inorganic such as peat and pumice.
Great tutorial, thanks! I am about to plant my first san pedro into the ground at my outdoor office garden in Arizona
Thank you and best of luck, you got this! Make sure to really anchor it in the soil as best you can.

What do you know about Juul’s Giant?
It’s a popular cultivar of Trichocereus pachanoi
I recently planted a top cutting. Is there a method to find out when i should start watering ?
You'll want to wait until the cutting's roots become established - this can take around 4-8 weeks. We also have a video on planting cuttings if you'd like to take a look! It has planting tips and a section on post planting care.
Why does it say "5 major types of San Pedro Cacti" but one of the types is a Saguaro Cactus? 🤔
Good question! The Argentine Saguaro (not to be confused with the Saguaro, or Carnegiea gigantea) shares the genus Trichocereus with these other cacti, it's scientific name being Trichocereus terscheckii. This video is a guide to the major kinds of Trichocereus cacti.
Please if you find the time to tell me the name of the one that looks blue ?
