    Thanks for all the tips! I have one question. How about growing a san pedro cactus from a seedling? I bought one from a tent at a phish show yesterday. This seedling is about 3/4 of an inch tall. I planted it upright in a well-draining pot, with cactus soil. My question is, should a newly transplanted seedling of that size be watered right away when planted? Or should it be dry while establishing roots? It's tiny, and I assume that means it's more delicate, so I want to make sure I do it right so it survives and grows!

    What's the rule of thumb on pot size, based on plant size?

    • @SanPedroSource
      @SanPedroSource Před 14 dny

      We try to recommend using as small of a pot as possible while still being able to maintain stability for the cactus, and accounting for future growth. Generally speaking, an 8" diameter pot with capacity for 3-5 gallons of soil medium will be enough for a 12"-30" tall San Pedro with a few offsets for a few years. Any bigger than that and you'll want te 12" - 15 gallon sizes to ensure you're not top heavy and tipping over with a larger plant. It's not an exact rule of thumb, but usually the plant is good at naturally limiting itself to the container. If you need it to stay smaller, go smaller!

    I live in Florida, have many many cactus around the house. Never did it proffesionaly, even my neighbords have huge cactus from my main cactus plant. BUT, a simple question, is there a special composte to grow cactus? I always did it putting pieces on the ground, here in Fl. we have a lot of sand. Now Im planing to remove 2 huges plants, ( non cactus) and grow at least 4 pieces on each side of the front yard as a project. Any special compost? Or keep doing what im doing just put cactus on the ground? Att: some die😭 80% grow

    • @SanPedroSource
      @SanPedroSource Před 18 dny

      We suggest a ratio of roughly 40-50% percent inorganic material like perlite or horticultural pumice to organic material such as peat moss and coco coir so that the water drains well. A well draining soil mixture, ensuring the cut end of the cactus is callused (if you're not using a rooted cutting), and not watering for the first 2-4 weeks will really help! No special compost is needed, though rooting hormone can help. Let us know if that answers your question :)

    • @SanPedroSource
      @SanPedroSource Před 21 dnem

      It definitely is possible but it's recommended to do this during warmer seasons, as both cacti will be actively growing. If you can do this indoors with controlled light and temperature, that can help!

      Hey there! Unfortunately we do not ship outside of the United States at this time. If you're planning on getting a San Pedro for your garden make sure to protect it from colder temps by using frost blankets or bringing it indoors or to a greenhouse (if possible). Trichocereus Terscheckii / Argentine Saguaro are a more cold tolerant option but you'll still need to be careful.

    I'm wondering how free draining the surrounding clay is, won't it trap water around the roots without more drainage? Also are a few days between planting and watering enough time for the roots to heal over and avoid rotting?

    • @SeductiveSpaceship23
      @SeductiveSpaceship23 Před 28 dny

      You should *always* wait about 14 days to water after repotting/damaging roots to avoid root rot. Generally the soil should be well draining but I guess they can adapt to various circumstances. Trichocereus are very resilient plants. Some would even say they're hard to kill.

    • @SanPedroSource
      @SanPedroSource Před 18 dny

      Since we backfilled the hole we dug with plenty of well draining soil, the root system will be centered in that and do just fine (even when the natural soil around it is full of clay that doesn't drain well). And yes! We recommend waiting 1-2 weeks to water to allow the cactus time to acclimate to the planting, moisture in the soil used, etc.

    • @exzactlyy
      @exzactlyy Před 18 dny

      @SanPedroSource Thanks, I was thinking that the surrounding clay would act like a seal, so with enough rain and nowhere to drain to, the hole containing the cactus root ball could fill up and stay wet for a while

    • @SanPedroSource
      @SanPedroSource Před měsícem

      While the San Pedro can tolerate some cold, it is maybe not the best choice for areas with prolonged snowfall and freezing temperatures. You can, however, use protective measures like frost blankets to provide an extra layer of insulation, trapping heat from the ground and helping to keep the cactus above freezing temperatures. Just make sure to cover before frost hits.
