    i am assuming if you put some sort of masked design on the metal piece being painted, that it would prevent the paint from adhering to the metal in those spots? Like if you had the letter "A" masked onto the metal, would you have any paint get on the masked off "A"?

      Yes. You would then need to leave the mask on while you place it in the oven for 10mins at 200deg. Once cooled you can then pull it off. I have done it section off segments like the threads of a bolt but not a more complex shape like a letter.

    Thank you for this video! I now feel confident to give it a try. Doesn´t really matter if i fail since the cost is very low. Here in Sweden powder coating guns is pretty expensive. I have been thinking for a long time that a powder coating gun can´t be rocket science since it`s all about charging particles.

    Hello. Perhaps this video is too old for you to look at comments but I'll try anyhow. Id like to make a powder coat system but am unsure about the design. I was a lab manager for a company that produced industrial equipment for handling powders. So I have an above average perception of whats going on. Additionally, I have painted cars for over 40 years and my garage is set up like a machine shop (milling machine, lathe, etc). So although it will be my first attempt, my goal (as in all my obsessions after retirement) is to make the best one with the least money. I really like your design. It seems, though, that the incoming air tube that goes into the bottom bottle could interfere with the powder coming out-not much, but still. Have you tried putting the incoming air in from the bottom of the bottle whereby fluidizing the powder? Even having 2 incoming air lines (one for fluidizing and one for conveying) seems an improvement. I know that a second or third hole would be less convenience, though. Another thing I've noticed is how crappy cheap sandblasters are. A volumetric feeder could help both tools. Imagine, for example, the auger in a meat grinder that pushes the meat towards the blade. If at the bottom of a small hopper were a level tube with an auger in it (screw conveyer) the flow of sand or powder could be greatly controlled. A cheap auger is an antique drill bit for wood and cheap pipe from anything along with a controllable gear motor powered like a cordless drill would be a huge benefit, especially for a sandblast. The auger could turn at any speed you want. There are thousands of design of those screws. They are for every type of material imaginable. There are other material handling devices that could be incorporated yet I see NONE in any of the fields. Any comment would be appreciated.

      This design was one I came up from over the counter supplies and spares. I have a 3D printer now so more things are possible. I have been super happy with the performance of this gun so the needs I have and so haven't thought much more about improving it. Would be keen to hear what you come up with.

      @@tinkersmith4615 Thanks for the reply. 3D printer is on my list. I needed on last week. One thing those guys taught me was they use acetone to clean the bed. I put some in a jar with pvc. Over night it turned into a paint that you can patch stuff with. I can fix all kinds of stuff with it. I think it could be a body filler. I've been watching tons of videos today. I find it funny how so many people have to shake the box to increase powder flow after paying so much money for the best ones. I had to deal with a different powder every day and had to make them all flow for test results. So I feel their pain. I'm leaning now on focusing on a fluidized hopper and getting a chinese imitation of a GEMA for $40. Another part of me wants to build a gun with an above hopper made out of a plastic funnel with perhaps a rotary valve or even a tiny bin actuator. I think the answer to the best one would vibrates the end of the gun (like an orbital sander) to allow increase flow, increase coverage area, and increase ionization. Could you answer one question for me? Why does no one use an old car coil? I remember some had 40,000 volts. I'll bet I have 5 of that type in a drawer. I have some unique ones too. Is there something I'm missing? can they be used?

      @@onenewworldmonkey not sure about the car coil. I haven't had much experience with them. I would just check how much current they draw. The ones I use have very low current so the danger of high voltage appears low.

      I think might actually be AC. I simply followed the +ve and -ve through in a straight line and assumed that the other ends were the same.

      I guess it depends how much you will be using it at any one time. I have had no problems with using it without fan, in a box with no ventilation.

    While a nice design and construction, I honestly believe you have way too much high voltage at the ends. I would try to reduce that substantiality. All you really need is a static charge to allow the power dust to stick to the part you are spraying, not serious arching. But other than that, clever setup...

      Usually there are 3 lead plugs on a multimeter: centre is ground (black lead), right reads volts and milliamps, left read amps. Did you move your red lead to the left hand plug when taking the reading?

    I've been messing with this project. I found the boost converter ~3-6vdc input, 400kv output on Amazon. The reason the output wires are the same color is because the output is 400kVAC. I see from your follow on videos that the gun does work and the powder sticks to the work piece. Why does this even work with AC?

      Try searching eBay for: - high voltage generator 400kv - dc converter constant current For the second, look for one with 2 variable resistors to set the voltage and current.

    What if you ground to earth the workpiece? Does the powder still sticks to the part? I'll make mine inspired on yours, my unit which was cascade model failed, I bought the cascade to replace and now its malfunctioning, dont know what's actually going on but I have a few parts to paint that cant wait no longer, just bought the items you used and try to make mine, did you use regular cables, is that safe to keep my hand close to these cables, spark doesnt go through the cables? 400kv is huge hehe Thanks for sharing I really wish you the best things in life!

      I haven't needed to ground the work piece. I just connect the negative wire the work piece and it works a treat. In the version in the video I used 20AWG wire and the high voltage would sometimes short due to the insulation being too thin. I have since changed to 16AWG and the problem went away. 400kV is not accurate I have since some gap tests (max distance for spark to jump) and it is more like 15-40kV depending on supply voltage.

      You could possibly achieve this by placing 4 prongs just around the nose of the spray gun, close to but out of the fan, and then connect those to the positive high voltage wire of my electrical unit this video. The negative you could either connect to work piece you are spraying (if it is metal) or to a tent peg in the ground.

Does the powder from the bottle flow up through the vinyl tube or does it go around the tube and through the pvc? The way I understand it is the air blows though the vinyl and the powder is blown via the pvc tube? Thanks again !

      You shouldn't need electronics knowledge to build this DIY guy. I provided detailed instructions in this video and tried to pitch it to those very little or no electronics knowledge.
