    I feel like such a chump watching this…. Senior year of high school, we competed in the “Dallas Rachmaninoff Piano Competition”. Needless to say, I got second…. She went on to win the Van Cliburn in 2001 (in a tie with Ioudenitch). It’s been a while, but I think she played C sharp minor? Anyhow, I guess I’m saying, even if you lose, it’s awesome to see those who win go on to do amazing things…

    So proud of our alumna student, Lucas Peters. I thank his family for sharing this outstanding event. With all the horrible things going on in the world right now, this Festival and Competition is like dream oasis in the middle of all else that provides hope, beauty, and light to all who partake and listen. Thank you for this! Ann Pittel, Director/Founder, Cornerstone Music Conservatory, Los Angeles.

    Poulenc condamnait cette partition qui est pourtant comme un condensé de son langage pianistique, une sorte d'équivalent français du Carnaval de Schumann..Mais les compositeurs ne sont pas toujours les meilleurs juges de leur propre musique..Bravo , en tous cas, pour cette magnifique interprétation.

    First, listen to Ravel's score. How he could come up with something so melodic and so disruptive at the same time I may never know. The next thing I noticed was the crossing of hands. When I improvise at my keyboard, I keep the left hand steady and cross the right hand over it. One can get some delicious results that way. Yet here, all the crossing is done by the LEFT hand. Whoa. Soon as I saw that, I put the video on pause and tried some left-hand crossing. Oh, my word. So pretty. Then I saw Pascal working both the sustain pedal and the soft pedal. Continually through the piece. Nice musical education.

      Did Ravel write how the pianist is supposed to physically play the piece in his score, which hands do what,or did he just write the music and let the player decide how he wants to play it?

    • @ThePainist
      @ThePainist Před 3 měsíci

      @@davidsheriff9274Yes, in the first movement the inner voice is supposed to be played by both hands, but it can physically be done with only one. However Ravel does indicate that it is to be played with both hands by putting the notes on both staves. With crossovers, it is very clearly shown exactly what hand plays what in the score.

    It's amazing how wonderful these "students" are! It's a good thing I'm not a master teacher. I'd have heard Chopin's Barcarolle and the 1st movement of Rachmaninoff's B flat minor Sonata and sat their mouth agape, stunned by the quality of what I had just heard! I can only dream--at the age of (gulp) 64--ever being able to play either of those great works, much less play them as wonderfully as these young pianists play them here. My hat is off to Stephen Hough for what he offers here in his suggestions and guidance. And I owe Mr. Hough for kindly sending me a post card from Germany and letting me know--in response to a letter I had written to him--how to get the music for Gabrilowitsch's "Melodie in E minor," a piece I first heard (and came to love) on his hugely enjoyable CD, "My Favorite Things." Not many professional musicians would take the time to do that. I will always be grateful to Mr. Hough for so kindly helping me to get hold of a piece of music that his marvelous recording "made me" love!
