Skyebird sets off north from the Great Sandy Strait. One of our longest trips at 43 miles and eventful. We spring a leak and spend 12 hours at sea battling through light winds in Hervey Bay. Then a night time approach to Burnett River follows with a tidal stream sucking us in before we come to rest, on the mud at Burnett Heads. #contessa 25, #contessa, #australian sailing, #east coast Australia...

My solo sail continues north along the Great Sandy Strait at Fraser Island. Departing the tranquil White Cliffs I sail into deeper water at last but not for long. Anchored in Inskip Point where I sort the boat out before heading SW away from the main part of the Great Sandy Strait. I'm heading for the fabled Tin Can Bay, home to many a liveaboard. Here I sit out another blow at the anchorage for a few days. Doing some fishing and cleaning of Skyebird before awaiting a high tide to motor further up the creek to the marina. Kevin, since I do similar single handed small boat sailing, I would be interested in what you have in terms of safety equipment and what you do for risk mitigation. Do you have liferaft, epirb, mob ais beacon ? What scenarios do you consider and how do you mitigate ? For example, I sealed up most of the old through hulls; I carry two anchors ; two vhf radios, one hand held; when alone always on safety harness etc. Would really welcome your thoughts here.
Safety gear I have includes offshore lifejackets, EPIRB, PLB and harnesses. For inshore sailing in Australia a liferaft is not a legal requirement but on a larger boat would be a consideration, but space is limited on our 25 footer. However, it remains a concern for me because my rubber dinghy takes time to blow up even with electric pump. I also carry and AIS and 2 vhfs. Seacocks are a worry - my self drainer pipe broke causing a leak - even though I'd checked it beforehand. Large anchors are essential I carry three. Also I use anchor weights - essential in heavy weather. Passage planning includes identifying ports of refuge - which can be difficult on Australia's east coast because of many sandbar entrances.
@@kevingreen_boating thanks for the overview ! I guess you have more than me to worry about when you need to abandon ship - no great whites and crocs in the Baltic
@@LondonerBerlin haha! But very shallow the Baltic - i found after running aground a few times while cruising there in the early 90s!
Your videos are appreciated. This is my kind of small boat, low budget sailing
Yep...cheaper than a old small car and twice as much fun!
Good one kev keeper coming cheers
Cheers Barney!
What's the difference, time wise, going outside Frazer than inside Sandy ¿???
Outside Fraser has pluses and minuses - avoids dangerous bar entry at Wide Bay. Minuses are being far offshore with no shelter, in EAC and the dangerous Break Sea Spit to the north of Fraser.
😊😊
Thank you can't wait till my Contessa is all done up, she's an old girl but strong bones
Rigging is probably the big job. And have fun Michael!
Getting my Contessa 25 hour week or two thank you brilliant videos
I am buying Contessa 25, for coastal cruising. Can you let me know how seaworthy they are what do I have read they are apparently very good any tips or advice thank you
Hi Michael - good solid boat but a race boat mostly so little room for comfortable cruising - get Top Hat if you want that. But if you want a pure sailing yacht the Contessa 25 is it. I've written some articles - check this one out afloat.partica.online/afloat-magazine/afloat-october-2018/flipbook/20/
🙂 Love the croc sign at the bar. Used to live in the Wide Bay.
haha - yep they are meant to about around, according to local rangers, so I didn't swim too deep Steve!
We have anchored in the Susan River overnight to await the incoming tide to allow Tui of Opua to motor up the Mary River to Marlborough. We had the same problems with the holding in the Susan River. When we were heading back out of the River Heads area Tui of Opua did a 180 degree turn in the overalls at the entrance to the Mary River. This only happened the once as we paid more attention to the timing of the tides on the 2 other occasions we went up the river to Maryborough
Interesting to hear Bruce. Yep i would have avoided it if i wasn't picking up my mate. Very scary it was but that's sailing - as you&Thelma know more than most!
Lovely part of the world to sail. If you need any work done to your yacht, Bundaberg Port Marina is cheap and professional.
Thks - was stormbound there and found them helpful!
It's not polished yet, but here, have one more subscriber <3
great video, however at 6:06 you use the winch wrong, a great way to jam your fingers/hand!! the correct way is to go round the winch with the line/sheet at least a hands width away from the drum, so if load comes on quick, you can 'dump' it, without it slamming your hand into the drum and have your palm facing inwards, so if it flies off, you can just open your fingers, and your palm isn't trapped between the rope and drum. One other thing, use the self tailer at the top, this GRABS the rope, so the drum can do it's thing, and you don't have to constantly provide tension to the turns; and have enough turns to do the job, three is great, as it provides some grip to hold the lines position, but more is better, esp. for headsail and mainsheet as they have a lot of load on them, and these extra turns allow slow release, feeding the rope around the drum to slack it off slowly and safely.
Great clip, one needs only a small craft to enjoy the pleasure of sailing in these waters. We have sailed the Great Sandy Strait a number of times in our Vertue and found it always enjoyable. T&B
Good to hear from u Bruce and hope ur both well!
Crocodiles are very rarely seen at Fraser Is. ? The last sighting was 2019. Rangers wearing Stinger Suits for Irukandji jellyfish ? .... I have never seen a Ranger wearing a stinger suit, as Rangers prefer to stay on land If there were Crocs at Fraser I certainly would not be paddle boarding....... Take Care
Really enjoy watching your channel , but Dingo's were actually brought into Australia by Aboriginal people's as they descend from Asian Wolf. .
I thought I detected a slight asian accent in their howls.

inflatale kayak sounds fragile in waters of sharks n crocs.
Yep but not too many crocs here... unlike when iv sailed the Kimberelys!
@@kevingreen_boating I much prefer sharks to crocs, sharks stay in the water and dont chase you up the beach and down the road.
Хорошая работа.
Hey Kevin, I recently had to chop up my 52 year old steel yacht and been thinking about trailer sailers; Do yu reckon a trailer job could make it around Australia? Not around the Bight tho, thats what trailers are for. I think of how I couldve saved 30 grand not paying mooring fees for the last decade.
Possibly. I went offshore in my trailer sailor when living in Europe because it was built to Micro Class Offshore rules. East coast islands ideal for them but WA challenging with little shelter.
I recall lots of deros liked the smell of White Lady. And the taste!
G'day kevin. On this trip north, how far north are you going ?, I now live in Airlie Beach, If you come up this way, is there an chance to meet up at one of the bars maybe??. Got an new channel, Sv Gemstar. Gerard.
Possibly Airlie Garard but have sailed here many times so may just stay south around the Perceys etc. But would be great to see you should we make it that far - next season. I do love the buzz of Airlie Beach race week!
@@kevingreen_boating Thanks Kevin. The south easters are going to kick in soon. so just be awear of that. My new boat will be up hear for the long hull as the motor is seised, that alone will take awhile for me to get repaired, I all so have an broken rudder that i will repaired first as thats going to the shop, than the mast has to be rerigged and stepped back on the deck. I am going to do an intro on the boatand vlog what i have to do to fix the boat up to the point of going back in the water. Gerard on Sv Gemstar.

Great videos
Amazing
Why is nobody wearing a life jacket?
Nice videos. My Yamaha 8hp in my old Beneteau F24 goes ok in reverse. When the wind is blowing, going reverse is the only way out of the harbour for me at our sailing club.
If that F24 is the twin rudder one that will be fun but still better than myboat!
@@kevingreen_boating no such luck, this boat is from 1984
Same issue with my Noelex, no control in reverse. I put a 4 blade prop on which I am lead to believe improves it somewhat. Will give it a go tomorrow and see how I go.
Interesting. Let me know how u go with the 4
I can relate to the insurance conundrum. Most insurers didn’t want to know about my Contessa. The only one I found was way to expensive so it was 3rd party for me. Thanks for the video. I do enjoy your adventures in Skybird.
Thks really appreciate that Mark. Re insurance - check out New Wave.
Why would you be envious of a stinking diesel....when your 2 stroke kicks the bucket, replace it with a Tohatsu 6hp 4 stroke and you will never look back..😊

Currently binge watching ur Sailing Oz east coast series, great stuff 🤗
Appreciate that Ivan!
Yep, been there as well with fuel problems, and stripping down the carb on the Yamaha 8 PS ... having also had old motorbikes, this helped
Just discovered your channel ! Nice to see someone else cruising in a similar sized boat and similar setup. I'm with my 40 year old Beneteau First 24 around the Baltic. Just curious whether you considered a windvane ? Currently I also use permanently the Raymarine ... but this drains my batteries, the noise is a bit annoying and I am a bit worried that it breakdown at the wrong moment, hence looking at a Windpilot Pacific Light (when I can find reasonable priced second hand)
Thks for watching Martin. Loved sailing the Baltic! On a Beneteau First 29. I have an old windvane but didn't fit it because coastal sailing only needs a tillerpilot in my opinion. I have 360amp hours of batttery and 500w of solar so easily runs my Raymarine St600.
Amazing well done
What happens to all that white fiberglass when these boats reach the end?? I've never seen a boat wrecker !
Yep mostly landfill rather than recycling in Oz ;-) but iv been to a boat wrecker at the Gold Coast because there's plenty customers there!

Bit rougher than trawling in the Gulf eh!
I wouldn’t be too worried about bull sharks. If you go diving at the seaway you see packs of at least 30. They leave us alone.
