I too have strabismus. I have had two surgeries and developed amblyopia. I have never had binocular vision. I have only been tested once for depth perception with the 3-d fly picture. I failed. I did a research project on strabismus as a university student. I read about vision therapy but I had never been offered it and was curious. There was an example that showed a picture of a bird in one eye and a cage in the other. One was supposed to put the bird in the cage. I saw a bird and then a cage but couldn’t merge the two images. I did do pencil push-ups and wore prisms after my first surgery at 14. I had my second at 28. This doctor did not offer and vision training. I too was terrified of driving. I often would ride in a car with my eyes closed because the sunlight would hurt my eyes. Drivers Ed was a nightmare class. Yes I can see the object, I am not blind. But the motion between myself and another object is visually overwhelming. When the other object is also moving, I am slower to adjust. My teacher did not understand that I needed a ton of practice with stable objects before trying to cope with traffic. I took the class at 16 but did not have a license until I was 23. Stairs are not the only problem with personal mobility. Hiking presents challenges. Because I cannot judge the distance in height, I am unsure of my footing. Uneven pavement makes walking on the street difficult . I recently fell and broke my arm because of it. It also causes fear of heights. My niece who also has strabismus hates swings. Bumping into things, other people or tipping things over is a common occurrence. Sometimes I must pickup an item multiple times because I am slightly off on the objects placement. I agree with your description of being lost in space. I also agree that there are social implications as well. When your eyes are not aligned people do not take you seriously. They assume that you are inept, stupid or uninterested. This creates a feeling of alienation and loneliness. Bullying is a common problem and can cause anxiety or self isolation. And while this problem is not as difficult as some disabilities, it does have life long consequences. An issue you did not mention was in the area of medical records. Because most of our treatment occurred as children, our records disappear and as children we did not understand all the tests or treatments we received. I have had other eye doctors ask for these records and they are lost or destroyed.

You are impressive! You made this very informative video in 3 languages!!! You must be so proud, I've been having binocular vision issue for years, and my doctors sent me to see a shrink just because they had no knowledge on the matter.

I’ve got super strong prisms on my glasses, in 2 directions, which improves my depth perception, but…my eyes have worsened since getting them and now I see extremely double without them. Way worse than the demo picture shown. Like…I see 2 people not 1. Kind of annoying. I also have progressive lenses and astigmatism. My optometrist tells me I am special. Lol.

8 лет уже двоения, очень плохая походка, а по поводу вождения машина двоится очень далеко от оригинала и правее и мутнее, так что уже привык. А по поводу призм даже самые большие призмы мне не достаточны очки у меня 17 диоприй а надо бы 19 по крайней мере мне так сказали)))

Сегодня испытал расстройство бинокля. Несколько минут недоумения, и все прошло. Стал искать причину в роликах. И вспомнил, что я начал принимать спиртосодержащий бальзам, видимо он и дал такую реакцию, ведь за 70 лет ничего подобного не испытывал. Ваша лекция очень понравилась, как и вы, поделился с детьми.

😢this made me cry. I’m 70 yrs young and have never been able to do sports. I can’t throw a ball in a pail 3’ away from me and never knew why. Now, I have double vision. My regular optometrist told me that the best thing to do is to get used to it. I asked about eye exercises, and he said no, there’s no such thing. This was 3 years ago. Needless to say, I couldn’t get used to the double vision. I’m just now realizing Ive had very little depth perception. I’m doing vision therapy now and I saw something in 3D the other day. I couldn’t believe it!!

Vous avez raison, j’ai 57 ans et aucun médecin ne m’a expliqué mon problème de vision, j’ai un œil amblyope et aucun médecin ne m’a suivi pour cela, j’ai vécu avec ce problème toute ma vie en me disant qu’il n’y avait rien à faire. 😢

Я долго не могла понять, почему меня очень часто одёргивают, когда я смотрю в монитор или телевизор. "Почему ты так хмуришься и смотришь исподлобья одним глазом?" Во время всяких сеансов с 3D фильмами я не видела никакого смысла, потому что никакого 3D я там не видела, зато быстро начинала болеть голова. Популярные в 90е книжки с объёмными картинками (которые сначала подносишь к носу, потом отдаляешь) меня только раздражали - всё там умудрялись что-то видеть, а я ничего кроме изначальной картинки там не видела. А в момент очень сильной усталости или после болезни мне было очень сложно смотреть на предметы - смотрю на стул, мозгом понимаю, что это стул, но будто не могу уловить его точные очертания. Периодически, когда смотрела на себя в зеркало, видела, как у меня косит один глаз. И я могу переключаться между ними без труда, а затем заставить оба глаза смотреть прямо. Но при определённом наклоне головы правый глаз у меня в ста процентах случаев будет косить. Не так давно сходила к окулисту, который подтвердил, что у меня имеется сочетанное косоглазие и отсутствие бинокулярного зрения. Сам уровень зрения у меня отличный и даже смотря одним глазом я прекрасно понимаю размеры и расстояния между предметами (ближе-дальше), но для меня это было большим откровением, когда во время теста с точками те самые точки в какой-то момент сошлись

Malgré l'avis de mon ophtalmologiste qui affirme que toute correction est impossible après l'âge de 7 ans.. Mais la science évolue tous les jours et améliore nos connaissances. Non credo che non ci possa essere un rimedio per il suo problema, o quanto meno dovrei visitarla. Tutto quello che lei dice è giusto, ma se lei vuole io sono a sua disposizione per cercare di risolvere il suo problema ammesso che ancora lo abbia, mi farebbe veramente piacere anche per una mia crescita professionale e per aiutare anche gli altri. Io mi trovo a Roma ed avrei come già detto, l'immenso piacere di poterla visitare. Del resto io amo le sfide, ma soprattutto i miei pazienti per tanto è mio dovere dargli una visione adeguata, perche senza dubbio chi vede bene vive meglio, ed io sono quì per questo. La saluto e spero di poterla incontrare presto qualora non avesse ancora risolto il suo problema.

У меня после лазерной коррекции обоих глаз. Глаз, у которого была амблиопия, гиперметропический астигматизм, плюсовое зрение. Этот глаз начал косить к носу. Когда смотрю вдаль вижу два изображения одного предмета. До этого в глазах двоилось когда я смотрела очень далеко, в близи нет. Но после аппаратного лечения глаза косят порой и вблизи, а дальность косоглазия приблизилось. До операции глаза не косили.

I have had a lazy eye my whole life. I have limited depth perception and parking my car can be extremely challenging at times. I try to park far away from other cars if possible even if I have to walk further to my destination.

Tried the prism glasses as a child. They didn’t work. Be glad you got the surgery.

My parents caught it pretty quickly when I was a kid and I got surgery to correct it when I was five. I still have to get oppiontments and surgeries for my eyes though. Doctors would have me do these exsorsies that would give me horrible headeachs too. I remember also falling down stairs often, (which develped into now have a fear of falling and stairs even after I got depth perception) and also being afraid of shadows since I wasn't sure if it was really a shadow or a black pit in the ground.

Back in time you dont even habe to fake that you know those languages

I wish I could sue someone about this because not only is my BVD congenital, it's severe enough that depersonalization, brain fog, headaches, and fatigue are just given constants to my life. I was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism for crying out loud! I'm 24, lost out on scholarships and various other opportunities because my brain is overworked from not just life, but also being overtaxed by my eyes.

I've been consuming only american media for years. I'm basically in total immersion without leaving my house. But I still have a foreign accent. I think some people are just good at copying the rhythm of languages. I've made efforts to pronounce English properly since childhood but I still don't sound remotely like a native. Not that I necessarily want to; I just don't want people to ask me about my country instead of pursuing the conversation. Your life is so easier when your accent is almost inexistant. Anyway, when she says that you have to see languages as music, it's easier said than done. Depends on your talents

My not having binocular vision had no real problems this just crap sorry

I have monocular vision I use right eye or left eye. For example I can’t read at all left eye just with my right eye. I have never had any problem driving poring stuff going down stairs eye patching was a waste of time

Can you believe I paid s doctor that did a binocular vision test and didn't tell me results until a week later but knew I had severe binocular vision and didn't have the courtesy to tell me I had severe convergence insufficiency and tracking difficulties. And head of a vision clinic.
