New adaptation strategies are required to deal with climate change, and using more efficient rootstocks is potentially a sustainable solution. It is generally known that rootstocks can confer favourable properties on the grafted plant, however, the New Zealand wine industry does not have robust knowledge relevant to local conditions to make informed choices about the best rootstock options for ...

The combination of increasing production costs, a constrained labour supply and increasing vineyard area all signal a need to explore alternative production systems for producing Sauvignon Blanc. Long spur pruning has shown promise as an alternative to cane pruning for Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough, with the potential for reduced labour requirements at a similar yield and quality. Spur pruning...

As the average age of vineyards across New Zealand increases, grape growers and managers increasingly recognise the effects of grapevine trunk disease on both vine productivity and longevity. One option that can potentially “renew” and extend the life of infected vines is remedial surgery. This procedure involves removing the trunk above the graft union and growing a new shoot to replace the ol...

Grapevine trunk diseases are a threat to the economic sustainability of the New Zealand wine industry. They cause significant yield and quality reductions and also shorten the lifespan of vineyards. Reliance on remedial surgery to ‘renew’ infected vines by removing diseased wood is set to increase as vineyards in New Zealand are aging. As part of the ongoing project developing best practice gui...

This is a two-year research project to identify the epigenetic markers of environmental stress in grapevines, and to demonstrate the concept of using small RNA molecules to “tune” plant responses (using a technique that would not be considered genetic modification). In addition to providing knowledge relevant to the later stages of the Sauvignon Blanc 2.0 programme, the aim of this project is t...

Four-cordon, long-spur pruning offers an alternative to can pruning Sauvignon Blanc. Bragato Research Institute has a trial to compare two-cordon, long spur pruning as an alternative to cane pruning for Sauvignon blanc in Marlborough and collect data to report on the relative cost of each pruning type and the medium so grape growers can make an informed choice.

Four-cordon, long-spur pruning offers an alternative one-season solution for pruning Sauvignon Blanc. It’s easy to learn, quicker and less physically demanding than cane pruning as there is no requirement for manual stripping or large head-cuts. Grower trials suggest that a similar number of buds can be retained on a four-cordon vine, when compared to a four-cane pruned vine. The method can be ...

Farò quella vostra potatura a doppio binario, interessante. Ciao alla prossima. 😳😊🤔💪✌️

I understand spur pruning and cane pruning but it seems that you are mixing the two together when you mention two replacement spurs and two working spurs together with 4 cordons with spurs for next years producing vines. By replacement spurs I assume that means that the 4 cordons your currently have on your vines will be replaced from the two spur replacement canes but I don't see in your pruning routine when they are replaced. You currently end up with 4 cordons with spurs for next year producing vines but I don't know what you mean by the two working spurs - what do they do besides just grow producing vines and if that is there purpose it seems to be redundant alongside the spurs along the cordons.
