In this video, I get into the weeds on everything I think about as a folky guitarist-arranger: essential theory concepts, reflections on what I've learned from copying and analyzing others' arrangements, the nuts and bolts of any song, types of arrangements I make, and a breakdown of the process I go through with any new song I'm learning and arranging for myself or a small group.

I'll Be Here in the Morning (Townes Van Zandt Cover) - Lindsay Straw

Get early access and tabs over at patreon.com/lindsaystraw Back in my TNAG days I covered this Townes favorite in a Santa Cruz H13 feature video, so I had kind of forgotten about it as an option for this series. But I've been playing it a lot lately at market gigs, and it occurred to me that folks here might be excited to learn this one, too! So here it is, with the tab featured over on Patreon...

This might seem off-brand for me, but I'm a little obsessed with Shania Twain right now. What started this pop country rabbit hole? Well, The New Grown-Ups are doing a 90s country night this coming Monday at Remnant Satellite in Cambridge, and this is one of the songs I'll be leading. www.thenewgrownupsband.com/ Much as this song may seem simpler at first blush compared to an intricate fingerst...

Join me on Patreon for a chord chart and breakdown! patreon.com/lindsaystraw While I've got some originals and trad tunes in the works, I thought it'd be fun to release a cover that didn't require quite as much creative input on my part, but was still high on the personal enjoyment scale: classic James Taylor! No reinventing the wheel here - this is just me doing my best to imitate. Along with ...

Join me on Patreon for early access and tabs! patreon.com/lindsaystraw It's rare to find traditional songs that feature multiple female characters. When they do, they almost always seem to be of the "Cruel Sister" murder ballad variety. That's why I especially love this tale of sisterly love and support from the songbook My Song Is My Own. According to the book's notes, unmarried relationships ...

Join me on Patreon for early access and tabs! patreon.com/lindsaystraw Is there an American folk musician under the sun who doesn't know some version of "Down in the Willow Garden"? Pretty sure this one is Murder Ballad #1! I pulled inspiration from versions by Lankum, Nora Brown, and Tim O'Brien & Paul Brady. They're all my favorites, so I combined a bit from each one. This is the first piece of music I’ve heard today, I couldn’t have wished or hoped for better 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nice pickin’
Amazing! So genuine.
Love this! Thanks for sharing ❤
Great job on this country cover 🎶🎵🎶.
My, this is a beautiful and simple rendition. Not to take away from your singing and playing, both of which were superb, but this performance is exactly what this songs needs. No more, no less. Humble and unadorned and so very honest. I love it.
Very nice!!
The WA87 has a much better mid and low tone yet the ear trumpet has a lighter tone it all depends on the music that you're playing, if it's with a band I would choose the WA 87 but if I was playing classical nylon string guitar it would be the ear trumpet.
Thank you Lindsay this is good
Nice surprise… it takes a bit of talent to make that song uplifting… one of my favs…
That’s good!
A lovely cover, thanks Lyndsay 😊
Beautiful cover
✨Splendid arrangement of this timeless, deeply 💧heartfelt music. Best Wishes for your Creative Musical Explorations.
Lovely!!
Clicked on this video in a heartbeat! It didn’t disappoint ❤
Beautiful performance of a great song
Somehow lost track of your music since The North American Guitar so very glad to be reunited, nice work Lindsay!
I like it, it’s so nice!!
Hey Lindsay, great cover...I appreciate the versatility in your musical styles....how wide is your musical canvas, ragtime perhaps? Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
Great! One of my favorite Townes songs.
Always love to hear Townes! Thank you Lindsay 🙏
Beautiful performance.. thanks for sharing..❤️😄😊
Wonderful! Just wonderful! Beautifully played and sung.
You play the guitar and sing very well!🎸🎤
You are the best❤🎉
Excellent. Most times people who have lived thru some rough times and struggles write the greatest stuff. Some of us, though not proudly lived many years that way. Sadly Townes always battled demons. Sometimes its a substance, alcohol, your own mind. Some of us get that itch to take off, hit the rd, play the smokey bars and juke joints, drink, chase women and the like. But your not that way anymore. You changed for the better, made it out alive, literally. So alot of songs from certain writers, really hit home. Promises and hearts broken, scars you cant see. But can still write you a good tune in 5 minutes and pick it. Some would snubb their nose at you but record that song in a heartbeat. Sadly many who are gone to soon dealt with that, not so pretty side of life. I sound jaded I suppose lol. Thank you Lindsay again for doing another old tune justice.....
I dig the American folk tunes
Such a lovely cover, you sang it so beautifully! 🎤🎶❤ Wishing you a fantastic Sunday! 🌞🌼💫
Thanks, Lindsay Straw that was very nice. You can never go wrong with Mr. Townes Van Zandt.
Unless you try and emulate his lifestyle.
@@calebbhawkins I meant that you can't go wrong with his music.
Nothing like a Townes song played by a talanted and pretty lady. :) Townes would often head north in the summer...Colorado/Montana and back to Texas before winter set in. As Steve Earle wrote in his tribute to Townes" You always said the highway was your home, we both no that ain't true. It's just the only place a man can go ,when he don't know, where he's traveling to."
I hadn't heard that bit from Steve Earle...how lovely!
@@LindsayStraw Check out Steves's song Fort Worth Blues. He wrote it just after Townes passed..in tribute. Knowing that all the lyrics will make more sense. You would do a wonderful cover of it.
Somewhere Townes is grinning!
This is gorgeous Lindsay. Really enjoyed this.
Very nice cover. Beautiful voice and guitar playing. Lovely performance.🎸👍👍👍❤
Brilliant version; once again, I'm taken to another time and place by your voice and precision playing 👏
❤
Loved 😊💕
Nice guitar work & beautiful singing as always! I also love the sound of the Jewitt guitar too!
Beautiful performance, beautiful cover! Thank you, Lindsay!!😊🙏
Thank you for this song. I don't care if you don't like Carolina in the mornings 😊😊
What a beautiful ballad!!! I didn´t know it 🤷♂. Thank you for introducing it to me with your wonderful performance, dear Lindsay 🙏🙆♂🥰👌👏. Like #235 👍. Take care, mate 👊💪🤸♂🫂💖🙋♂.
Thank you, dear Lindsay, for your wonderful sounding performance of this beautiful and popular song 🙏🙆♂🥰👌👏. Like #60 👍. Have a blessed rest of this week 🙌✨😇🫂💖🙋♂.
So great, Lindsay! More please!!
A heartbreaking farewell.
Clear, pure sound flowing smoothly like the River Garry running placidly along by Killiecrankie.
What's this one's story?
I hate to do the obnoxious thing of "let me Wikipedia that for you" but it's easier than trying to sum it up myself! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_in_the_Willow_Garden
I posted our mix of this song yesterday.. Thank you Lindsay❤❤❤
great interpreration!!
I didn't know this one but it's a great song. I love it when people work Cupid cleverly into songs like Buddy Holly did.
Molto brava. Complimenti
This is a great change of pace. Really like your take on it, Lindsay. One of those songs that looks really fun to play. I may not try this one. Hell, if the Shania vocals are a challenge for you, I’d butcher it! 🙃
@@k2thepeak well, only if you're trying to copy her timbre and tone as much as possible! One could certainly sing it in their own style 😉
