I do no agree that these were "animal traps" because if you study them extensively you will notice that the trap walls of some of the kite intersect and if animals were able to follow a path due to the walls they would never make it to the trap. But that is the only knowledge we have, so I would suggest we approach the function of these structures as being much more than animal traps.

My son and I visited Umm el-Jimal for the first time last year on our way out to Jawa and it was one of the most amazing sites we've ever experienced. When we walked around the corner into the front door of the double church, and saw the mosaic floor, my 23 year old son was moved nearly to tears. The site is so big and dense, we both agreed that on our next trip we will set aside at least two full days for Umm el-Jimal.

Wonderful, important work. Please note, commenting as a local historian now, not as an archaeologist, Jack equalized the current horrific Syrian displacement and refugees with 1948. In the Quran it is mention that Allah redeemed Jesus. i.e. he took him up to heavens. So, I think may be the correct translation for Issa (عيسى) would be "the redeemed" instead of "the redeemer" as prof. Ahmed suggested. The Quran did not arabize the name of Jesus as Yassoo (يسوع) becuse it means in Arabic (to miss or to lose) which is opposite to the Islamic beliefs about Jesus.
