This is definitely a challenging situation. The good news is they clearly want you in their organization which is always a great place to be. My advice is at this point, you have been in their recruiting process for several months and your counter has led to a better job title and offer. However, it is not meeting your expectations for salary. You will need to be honest with them regarding your salary expectations. If they cannot meet them, then it may be time to move on. Thank them respectfully for their time and effort if you decline as you never know what may come from this interaction down the road. Good luck and please let me know the outcome!

This is just my advice and others may disagree. In the early stages of your career focus on gaining experience and work that builds your ability to be creative, innovative and solve major organizational issues. This may come at the expense of a quick promotion but the experience you gain in your profession will make you highly desirable to your current and future employers and with this, will come far greater promotions and higher paying positions. Experience is massive in accelerating your career. Be patient, strategic and good things will come.😀

Yes wait and see how they respond. They did ask for your salary expectations up front and chose to continue with you. If your expectations were out of their salary range they should have told you. That is the professional thing to do so you don't waste time in a recruitment process only to find out that the company can't meet your salary. You will have to see what they come back with. Are there other areas that are not salary that will perhaps allow you to accept a lower salary (i.e. Bonuses, vacation, pension etc.)? These may be an area worth negotiating. However, you may be in a place where you have to walk away from the offer if they cannot meet your expectations. Let me know how it all goes and good luck!

@@clarkglassford9200 Hi Clark, thanks for your advice. While they didn’t reach my expected salary, they gave a better offer than the first one after I negotiated. It’s a couple of hundreds less, but at least I didn’t leave that extra money on the table. And best thing is it’s a good firm with lots of extras such as discounts on its products, better med facilities, etc. Plus, the people I will be working under have lots of experience, one of them worked at Microsoft sometime back. So good mentors 🤞🏻. Your video was a bonus for me, keeping my moxie high in the wait and watch period.

Thanks for the comments and reaching out to me on LinkedIn. The approach is knowing what the market rates are for similar positions in this industry and then making a counter offer based on your research and what your experience brings to the role. Be polite and professional with your counter-offer. If they say they can't move on salary then you will have to decide which company has the best total compensation package for you. That is unfortunate and it may be that this is the point you respectfully decline their offer. You can always explore other benefit enhancements suck as medical enhancements, additional vacation, other allowances. However, if the money is too low for your needs then it is probably time to walk away. It is always a tough decision as you have been through an entire recruitment process just to get an offer that is below expectations. Good luck.

Yes I hear your frustration however, there is a way it is just a bit hidden. Click on the persons profile and you will see under their main banner 3 options: 1) Follow, 2) Message and 3) More. Click on "More" and it will give you an option to connect. Once you select "connect" it will give you a further option to write a personalized message. 😉 I'm not sure why LinkedIn has set it up this way. It may be to prevent users from spamming other users. However, you can make personal connections on Linkedin if you follow the above. I hope that helps.

Thanks for your comments on this topic. It's not an easy decision as there are so many factors to consider. I always recommend making a pros and cons list for both employers. Sometimes it is easier to see the right path when it is written down.

Your walk away number is based on a number of factors such as the research you have done to establish market comparators, your experience level and the total compensation offered (i.e. benefits, vacation etc.). There are also other intangible items such as remote work options, proximity to home etc. So your walk away number is a very personal decision based on all of those factors. Now that said, you want to be happy with the salary and 9/10 times there is always room to negotiate. You should be aiming for the mid to higher end of the salary range based on your research. If the offer is coming in lower than that and you feel you have the necessary experience, then you may need to walk. I hope that helps!😀

Thank you for your comment and I am very sorry the your job offer was rescinded after such a lengthy job search process. Companies rescind offers offers all the time for a multitude of reasons such as not able to meet salary expectations, change in hiring priorities, a more suitable candidate etc. So a rescinded of an offer may be a result of something else and yet they has attached it to your salary expectations. That said, if it was rescinded as a result of your higher salary ask, this is where it is important to do your research on comparable salaries in similar roles and industries. Salary.com and payscale.com are excellent resources to gauge if your salary ask is reasonable or not. There is always a risk of asking for a salary on the higher end as it can push an employer to rescind if they can't meet your expectations. You will regroup from this experience and the right job offer will come your way. 😉

Always have multiple offer before going back for a re-negotiation for higher salary.

Just curious if you had been looking for over a year. What made you negotiate the offer? Did they low ball you or you just thought it’s always necessary to negotiate for a higher salary? I was thinking about negotiating my offer I received but it was fair and I didn’t see the reason to try and get more money and risk of them taking offer back. The job market is hard right now

The fact that you have made it known to the Recruiter that you expect a higher salary than your current salary, means that you should expect that if they make you an offer, it will be higher. Remember, that Employers expect you to negotiate. So typically the first offer is not the max so you can negotiate and at that point make it know what your expectation are. Thank you for the comment. I think it depends also on the level of job you are applying for. If you are applying for more of an entry level job 2.5 min may be just fine for an interview answer. However, as you progress into more senior roles you will need to provide more detail which is difficult to get out in an answer in that short of time. 4-5 min is a good target to aim for in providing a fulsome answer.

If you really want to stay in the current role there is a reason for it (i.e. type of work, great employer, work/life balance, benefits etc.). Although $5000 is a lot of money, it may not have as much weight when you consider what you are gaining in totality from your current employer. If $5000 is a deal breaker for you, then make sure approach it professionally with your ask to renegotiate your salary. The old saying "you never know unless you ask" is very relevant here. Some employers may say yes while others the answer will be "no." If you want make the ask, simply approach your manager/HR and say "I've just received another offer. I'm really enjoying my role in this organization and want to stay. The difference in salary is $5000. Are you able to match this offer?" If the answer is yes, hooray!!! You are now $5000 richer. 😀 If the answer is no, then you will have to think about if you want to stay or go. But remember, keep it polite and professional. You may not get what you want so be prepared for that! Please let me know what you decide. All the best.

You can always negotiate. The worse an employer will say is "No." Make sure that you have researched similar roles and salaries in the industry (payscale.com). This will help you understand if what you are asking for is reasonable or not. Then simply respond to the employer professionally with your counter offer and why you feel your experience and expertise is worth it. Should they say no, there may be other benefits (i.e. vacation) and perks that you can enhance. If they cannot give you anything else, then you must decide if this is the right employer for you. @@clarkglassford9200 I have an update. I asked for the things above, plus I put pressure due to a competing offer. They decided to withdraw the initial offer 😅 But that’s okay because I was aware of the risks and this was my plan B. I ended up accepting the competing offer for 10% more than the one that was withdrawn 🙌 This was definitely a learning opportunity and I’ll be more careful in the future

Lot's of good questions. My first rule when someone is just starting out their career is, get experience!!! Look for companies and roles that will get you the experience you need to accelerate your career. Often we focus on who pays the most. However, this can be an issue if the job does not give you the experience you need to move ahead in your career in 3, 5, 10 years. So put some time into reviewing where you want your career to go and be selective in the roles you apply for based on what they offer and how it can benefit your career. Great question and if I understand your what you are asking, it comes down to how you interview the employer before getting hired. The interview process goes both ways. Employers ask you questions to see if you are qualified and a fit for their company. You also get to ask questions to determine if the role and organization are right for you. Make sure you ask very pointed questions about the organization, the role, overall culture and even pain points. This will help with clarity and improve your success rate. Thank you for asking this as it is a great question. You will have to determine your own questions as this will be specific to your own knowledge and understanding of the person you are contacting and the company/industry they are in. However, your questions should focus on 3 key areas 1) the industry, 2) the company and 3) roles within the company that may align with your background and career goals. If you can build some questions that focus on these 3 areas you will make a great impression!
