Theres a few others I haven't seen people mention. Smash Ultimate has a few spirits that you can unlock from having save data from other games (Persona 5 Strikers save data gives Sophia, Dragon Quest 11 gave the Tockles), P5 Strikers also gave bonus items if you had P5R/P5 save data (or Smash Ultimate on Switch). Persona 3 FES had an option where you could transfer your save data from vanilla P3 to FES and would transfer Persona Compendium, Fusion Spells, Character Stats, and Items from Maxed Social Links. A super recent case is Astro Bot is gonna let you transfer all of the new Special Bots you save in Astro's Playroom.

a lot of games still have these, albeit they're typically pretty minor things. games like smash ultimate, persona 5/persona 5 royal/persona 5 strikers, ff7 remake/ff7 rebirth, pokémon like you mentioned, etc.

I see people mentioning Rachet and clank, Jak and Daxter did the same thing, for instance Jak X combat racing allowed you to play as Ratchet or Clank if you had, i believe, up your arsenal, or Deadlocked saved data

I think one of my personal favourite examples of this is in the original ratchet and clank trilogy, where if you had a save for the previous games you’d get bonuses depending on which one Ratchet and clank 1->2 gave you the chance to buy back some weapons from the first game for free if you had them in the first game, but if you didn’t then you’d have to pay the price it was in the original Ratchet and clank 3 had this feature for some other weapons from 2 but they did something different for having a save from ratchet and clank 1 In the first game, if you got to a certain point, a moment in the story happens where you’d get a weapons discount after 2 years, insomniac released 3 and they kept that in because it was made 2 years after the first, so you would get that discount However, intentionally or not, if you didn’t have a save file that was after this moment in the story (and doing new game plus resets this as well fyi) the discount isn’t applied until you get to that point of the story again Kinda weird but the games were made in a time crunch so I won’t complain Overall thing I still think it’s a cool way to reward players for sticking to the franchise, especially by the time you get to 3

Exclusively in Ace Combat Zero, if you have an Ace Combat 4 save file, you can unlock the Wyvern jet for purchase after completing the first mission instead of having to go through the story campaign twice on two different pathways. And if you have an Ace Combat 5 save file, the Falken jet can be unlocked by going through the story campaign three times (Mercenary, Soldier, and Knight morale pathways) to obtain the regular medals instead of going for the SUPREME medals which are more difficult to earn.

I remember Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition on PS2 would automatically unlock Hard Mode and Vergil if you had a save of the original release. In NTSC-U and PAL regions the prior release had the difficulty increased (easy was normal, normal was hard, and hard was a new difficulty which became very hard in SE) so if you were used to that you could hop right back in on Hard, plus having the new character playable right away since you probably already played Dante’s campaign.

SMT: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 actually have very interesting save data bonuses when using a new game + save data from the first game when starting the sequel. You unlock hard mode from the beginning (which is normally ng+ exclusive), you gain stat bonuses based upon your game completion, you gain different items and equipment depending on the optional bosses you defeated, and depending on your choices in the first game you can bring a party member back in the story and even unlock one of the strongest moves in the entire duology.

Idk if anyone else potentially commented this already.. but relating to the videos mentioning of the little sprites and stuff you got to see on the PS2 memory card. I was pretty captivated by that as a kid, too. Whenever you'd get a new game, or rent one.. first, you got to read the little booklet/manual on the ride home. Like cover to cover, likely multiple times if it wasnt a short ride. Well, wait. Before even that, before even buying or renting the game, obviously, you checked out the back of the case first. As a young and stupid kid, for the longest time.. a little longer than I should have prob, my decision to buy games like 85% came down to the stuff on the case. Mostly stuff on the back, since cover art can be receiving. When I was a little older, I had subscriptions to video game magazines and would make more educated purchases through that, that's another whole conversation in itself. But anyway.. so there was the reading and studying of the physical case of the game and the booklet. If it came with one. If you're buying used or renting, a good amount of the time it sadly didn't. Then you'd get home, pop the game in and play the shit out of it for a good while.. then when you got a little bored, it was like this extra little treat or cherry on top to be like "I wonder what the save data looks like" and go check that out. But ALSO, it's not JUST the little sprite or picture that depicts the save data. They'd often change if you went to delete them, which felt slightly dangerous. It's like the feeling of inching close to the edge of a tall surface and risking falling or something. I worded that less than eloquently but struggling to think how else to phrase it.. But when you'd click "delete" it'd have an additional window pop up like "Are you sure? Yes / No" and the sprites would often change or do a little something different. Most commonly they'd go from cute to crying or something. Or at least change expressions, how their head etc etc. Which, I rarely ever actually did. It was sort of just an additional test and like layer of checking out this new piece of entertainment you got. There wasn't a hell of a lot to do for long periods of times, at least when I was a preteen. There wasn't readily access to the internet and even if there were, it's not like much interesting existed. You just killed 2 hours playing clash games on Newgrounds or whatever and there wasn't much else to do or incentive to go back. I'm specifically talking even pre-youtube, but even the first years of CZcams had very little and very different content on it. Certainly not the video essay type stuff we have today, that I find myself consuming for hours on end and am incredibly grateful for. I haven't experienced the feeling or sensation of "boredom" since I was something like 16. I think part of that comes with getting older and getting hobbies and aspirations, but I think part of it, for me at least, definitely is attributed to the advancements of technology. And thank fucking god. I think about if I were born even 15 years earlier, it would've been hell for me.

Need for speed underground 2 save file on memory card would give an extra $10,000 in Need for Speed Most wanted. Ratchet and clank 2 would give a few free ratchet and clank 1 weapons with save data from 1, similarly Ratchet and clank 3 you would get a 10% discount on gadgetron weapons if you had a save from the first game, only catch was it had to be a certain way through the game and I believe you needed the weapons in your R&C save, slim cognito would also give free R&C 2 weapons if you had them in R&C 2 and (I think) you had to have their mega versions in NG+

The Forza games had some cross-save bonuses, for example: - If you played the first Horizon by a specific date, you unlocked an exclusive Viper for the main game. Same for Horizon 4, but with a T-shirt and no time limit. - Horizon 5 gave you the hero cars from the previous entries if you played them. - You unlock stuff in Motorsport 4 depending on your progress in Motorsport 3; there is even an achievement for it. - If you played the Fast & Furious spinoff, you unlocked something in the main Horizon 2 game.
