It has been obvious for decades that the headlong quest for integration without regard to cost, came with great cost to community and black culture. Same is true for so-called urban renewal and freeways slicing through historic communities. Huge cultural cost!

I was blessed to grow up under the leadership of a very young Zan Holmes during the late 1950s. Only now do I realize that he was less than a decade older than I. I hung on to his every mannerism, cadence, timbre and voice inflection as he spoke and sang from the pulpit. Per his advice, I took a typing course in high school. He told me to ignore criticisms from peers. As a result, I have never been influenced by so-called "peer pressure". I could tell that he, almost singularly, was genuinely interested in my future. During those days, we didn't have a clue about integration. Not even a black postman, and only one "negro" cop in the city of Dallas. This was the era of the Emmett Till murder. He was only a few months older than myself. Thus, I identified with him totally. I was deeply scarred by his murder, the murders of Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner, Viola Liuzzo, Medgar Evers, the murders of the four little girls in the bombing of the Birmingham church, the assassinations of Dr King, President Kennedy, and RFK. I also lived during the intense psychological pressures of the Cold war layered on top of a dysfunctional family, society, and world. Concomitantly, I learned of a dual system of justice in the US, and the term "jury nullification" when his killers were brought to trial. That was the terroristic era in which I came of age. There was no man whom I respected as much as Rev. Holmes. As mentioned, my family was highly dysfunctional, though I tried to hide it from public view. So, Reverend Holmes was my only male role model . My female role model was Mrs V.T. Starks, my high school Counselor. In many ways, she, like Dr Holmes, showed her love and concern for me in a very circumscribed and proper manner. She could not publicly identify me as the teacher's pet. But, I knew I was. She was known to be firm and stern. I knew that was only a veneer (which I concluded after tossing a Dallas morning newspaper through her front window as I delivered that chronicle one beautiful spring morning. She graciously allowed me to repair it a few hours later. From that moment forward, we grew in mutual respect and affection for each other). I called her during the final year of my Master's Program at Georgetown Law in DC. Her voice told me how much she cared. Blessedly, I was able to host her in DC during the mid '80s. I took her to fine restaurants and on a tour of the city. My firm intention was to maintain contact with her forever. But, inexcusably and inescapably, life happened, including even more insanely acute and traumatic familial dysfunction following the untimely deaths of my father, older brother, and shortly thereafter, my mother. Amidst all of this, I lost touch with Mrs Starks. I called the HP Methodist Church several times during those years in hopes of reuniting with her. Unfortunately, I was only able to leave messages with the church secretary's voicemail, which sadly, were never returned. My mother was eulogized at the HP Methodist Church. But, by that time, Mrs Starks was out of reach and I could not find her. To this date, my greatest personal regret is that I could not have shown more love and gratitude to that fine lady. I am taking all of this space in an effort to show some degree of love and gratitude for Dr Holmes. God bless you Sir. You are looking well and vital. Wisdom

A few years ago, when I read this Scripture from the Gospel of the Apostle John 21:15-19 "Feed my sheep", I understood that this was the mission of the shepherds, the servants that Jesus calls to care for, feed and feed his children, his sheep. Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr., explained in great detail this mission that Jesus has delegated to the pastors. We have a Hispanic Bishop, and he speaks Spanish! We give all the glory to God! We have prayed and hoped for many years, and finally we have a Bishop after God's own heart; and also Hispanic. To support, help and feed the souls of our Hispanic community within the United Methodist Churches. During this video I saw a person who did the translation in sign language for deaf people. It would be good if they also do the translation into Spanish so that our Hispanic community understands the Bishop's message. Bishop Saenz is, without question, the quintessential episcopal leader. His reference to St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo during the 4th century, is timely and deeply relevant. Perhaps the people called Methodists will survive because of leaders like Bishop Saenz. Not since the late Bishop William McFerrin Stowe of the United Methodist Church has the North Texas Conference (I dare say the world) heard such a compassionate voice and experienced an authentic witness to the heart of Jesus Christ. Do you love Christ? Feed his sheep. Keep your hand on your heart.

I love this story! My Great Grand Father, Rev. Richard Henry Harry-Louisiana United Methodist Conference, was the minister at Harry's Chapel UMC founded in 1870 in what is now the city of Bogalusa, Louisiana. As a 4th generation United Methodist, family has always been my oreintation towards the United Methodist Church. Harry's Chapel is still a functioning church in the Bogalusa (Duffy Memorial Gardens) community today.
