Summary:
Few rock bands that emerged in the 1970s have achieved career longevity until the present day. One of the notable exceptions is the hard rockin' Canadian trio Rush. The group's 1974 self-titled debut and the follow-up album Fly By Night, issued the following year, created a buzz among heavy rock aficionados, but little else. The third album, Caress Of Steel, found the band beginning to create a hard-edged form of progressive rock (quite unlike its British progressive-rock counterpart) that confused as many fans as it gained. The breakthrough would finally occur upon the release of Rush's fourth album, 2112 in March of 1976. An ambitious concept album that explored a dystopian future, with lyrics influenced by the philosophical writings of Ayn Rand, 2112 found Rush striking a new balance between heavy and progressive rock that established all three members as highly accomplished instrumentalists. Arguably the band's signature album, 2112 would be lambasted by critics, yet gained the band a rabid global following that remains strong to the present day.
Presented here is Rush recorded live at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ at the tail end of 1976, just nine months after the release of 2112. Performing choice selections from their first four albums, this concert provides a nice overview of the group's early years, just as they were beginning to break big. From the raging opener of "Bastille Day" to the encore pairing of "Fly By Night" and "In The Mood," this performance is a prime example of these three musicians vacillating between the heavy metal leanings of their first two albums and the more ambitious material from Caress Of Steel and 2112.
Also featured here are strong renditions of "Anthem," another Ayn Rand influenced composition from their second album and the autobiographical "Lakeside Park" from their third, conveying a slightly softer side to the group. However, the centerpiece of this performance is unquestionably the epic title track from 2112. Clocking in at a full 16 minutes, here the band is clearly shifting into more complex compositions and the more eclectic sci-fi lyrical leanings that would capture the imaginations of millions. It was performances like this that won Rush such a dedicated following, which continues to pack arenas every time Rush takes to the road.

Dang, they was just getting warmed up, especially Alex. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 🤘
Saw Rush with .38 Special @ The Swing Auditorium in California in 1977. An amazing time for live Rock. No backing tracks, minimal light show. Just good ol R&R.
Wow, the audio quality is really really good on this specially compared to how the film looks. Geddy is really just laying it out here.
Rush na veia!
Always amazing!
currently reading Geddy Lee's book, My Effin Life, and remembering sneaking out to the Capitol in Passaic when I was 14. I think the ticket was $7. I felt like hearing them and found this footage, unbelievable that this exists. I'm covered in goosebumps and man, it holds up to time. What a band, what a song!!
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I saw them in 1977 and 1978 at the Allentown Fairgrounds. Both amazing shows. This song has this brightness that shines through the wistful nostalgia, capturing the lost magic of growing up. And this video shows Rush in those days where they first were becoming big; the freshness and clarity of Neil’s drumming with Alex’s energetic riffs and Getty’s sharp bass playing, all carried by that high pitched voice articulatiing the precision of the Rush message, just took me back to my front row perch right in front of Alex Lifeson, for 2 1/2 hours of pure joy. The wonder of it never grows old!
Even better than the studio version if that's possible
Incrivel banda !!!! Som único !!!! Geddy Lee voz com um timbre agudo também único. Neil Peart que baterista ??? OH MY GOD !!!!! Mestre da batera !!!!! Alex Lifeson !!! Meu Deus que guitarrista !!!!! Essa banda é demais galera !!!!! SEM COMPARAÇÕES !!!! Pois cada Banda sucita as preferências mais diversas !!!!!
LOVELOVELOVE
I miss this band, and my Country so much 😢
그냥 닥치고 레전드~ 내가 사랑하는 음악 중 1등!!!! 아~~~~~~최고!!!!
I saw this tour in a similarly named venue - the Capital Music Hall in Wheeling WV.
Man, I came to Canada in 77, that's freaking why I missed this performance. I would've gone to see it for sure
Geddy is my favorite bass player.
Rush were for advanced minds. Not everyone was able to digest Rush's intricating music.
Saw them in Manchester England in 1977, my ears are still ringing :)
It's a shame that three talented musicians could get taken in by something as inherently stupid as the writings of Ayn Rand, which is "philosophy" for those who never stopped being pouting 14-year-olds.
Canada has never made anything better
The Kings of 3 O❤️🤘
It would have been awesome to be at this show!
No appliances on stage?
who was Rush touring with during this tour?
How many 23 year old kids can play like this today and sing with no auto tune. ❤
Holy fuck geddy is one of the only people who sound the same on stage robert plant didnt sound the same chris cornell more than 50% but geddy is so spot on he doesnt get the credit he deserves for his amazing vocal talents one of the best
That's what we've always loved
The camera man isn’t too friendly with Neil.
Geddy had a voice from a nother world amazing and the whole band was ahead of their time there will never be another in life
When you realize sound engineers in 1976 could record drums better than the R40 crew. And when 1976 Slingerland drums sounded much better than any R30 or R40 DWs.
Rush was my first band I want to see moving pictures Buffalo New York great concert go see him every time I can peace out
what i love about this ,its just the music. they are literally playing for their lives.
Ouch. His voice was especially bad on this one.
This was my first concert 4-14-77 in Fort Wayne, Not bad for your first concert.
Eu fiquei 3 horas, numa fila para comprar este disco kkkkkkkkkso tinha uma loja aqui em floripa - Brasil kkkkkkk
2112 was my introduction to enlightenment....
AWESOME!!!!
RUSH RULES!!!!!
I wished they had played Something For Nothing instead of Anthem. There is no live footage of SFN as far as I know and there is footage of Anthem from some of the last concert tours.
What a prediction of a possible route mankind might take in the next 100 yrs made ~50 yrs in our past well before the 286 hit our living rooms...
Really only 2112
This is priceless, I was lucky to see them 5x. Amazing stuff
Three virtuosos, each an expert on their many instruments. A rock trio like no other.
CZcams, şterge-l Facebook nu preia link-uri în halul acesta ! Şterge-l!
😃🤘
People say mimicry is a sign that you’re respected. Geddys voice cannot be replicated. So cool to hear him live when his voice is as strong as ever. Peart is the best drummer to ever live. Alex is the king of clean distortion. This band will and can never be replicated.
Most modern metal drummers only wish they could touch the hem of Neil Peart's garment.
I'm not. I'm listening on 08/06/24. Rock on RUSH
Saw this show in Seattle at the paramount theater in 76…
I still crank up All the World's a Stage album in my car on a regular basis! Great audio quality for a video almost 50 years ago!
Rush capitol theater 12-76. I never knew video existed. Watch it.
