Hillary Simms Trombone: Interview Conversations with Musicians #brassplayer #musicpodcast
Hillary Simms @hillarysimmstrombone is a virtuosic Canadian trombone player with the esteemed American Brass Quintet and is on faculty at the Julliard School. Hillary’s warmth and love of music comes through in this candid interview, from her childhood in Newfoundland to playing on the world’s biggest stages, and also the unusual situation she found herself in when her engagement to her husband became a viral sensation in China.
As the first woman to join the Amercian Brass Quintet since 1960, Hillary spoke to me about gender disparity in the brass world and some of her strong female role models.
Hillary shares wonderful insights for all of us, whether you pursue music as a career or follow a different path, of the need to have self-compassion and have an awareness of the big picture of your life.
Hillary has performed as a soloist a couple of times with my orchestra, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra, and you’ll hear us talk about the arc of her career so far as a chamber musician, soloist, educator and busy freelancer. We decided to delay the release of this episode slightly in order to include a wonderful recent recording of the Amercian Brass Quintet, a movement from David Biedenbender's wonderful work Sacred Geometry. This is the first recording of the group with Hillary performing, and you’ll find more information and links below.

Nice job on the most difficult of Rode's caprices!
Thanks! Very helpful. Can you explain a little about background of this etude to make studying more effective? F.e. Harmonics, focus of studying,…..
Thanks for your feedback - I made these recordings mostly in 2020-21, among over 1,000 violin videos I've recorded for this channel, and although I don't have time to re-do this one, I do have a playlist of tutorials that may interest you (linked below) as well as my #violinpracticetip playlist here, where I have specific videos about harmonics, bowing challenges, intonation and lots more: czcams.com/play/PLYOGF0ZHOdI32fkU_20kJlAdXr5dA5Le9.html Tutorials here: czcams.com/play/PLYOGF0ZHOdI3dm0rzUPkTiz671LXPyjwT.html

Siempre que veo este video recuerdo un brindis en una cena del maestro Spivakov " por todo lo REDONDO en el violin" . Thanks and congrats, Leah.
Yes! I agree about the circles, keeping everything round (si entiendo). Thanks for listening and your kind words!

I discovered Vahn Black about a month ago and I am 100% an fan. I have shared her music with my friends and peeps and I received very good feedback on her artisty. This was very good interview. I love her music is made with purpose and with very great concepts. This young lady has a very bright future as she is craving her own lane in the music industry. I am a fan of the podcast now. Leah, keep up the good work. I will make time this week to check out of your other episodes.

Despite the issues with the internet connection, this interview is awsome. Brendan is an incredible harmonica player but also a great innovator. The things he explains here are really valuable. Thank you so much for this material. I enjoyed it a lot.

Amazing!👍👍👍
Thank you! 👍
Very nicely played - Brava! I'm surprised they put an excerpt this difficult in RCM at all! And you're right about the tempo - always tempting to play it a little quicker, so this is a great reminder!
Thanks! These excerpts are a good introduction for students to the whole idea of preparing excerpts, and I'm glad if these videos are of help to other violinists and teachers!
Beautiful piece, thank you! Strangely I cannot find any of the Piazzolla pieces (this one or Ausencias) in RCM 6-7 books. Which book are you using?
It's the 2013 edition, arranged by Hywel Davies, originally published by Lime Green Music. Most of these videos I recorded just before the 2021 edition came out.

Thank you so much for this video! It helped me a lot! Do you recommend a specific part in the bow to play at?
For most of us, "ricochet" bowing is best done just above the middle - you'll have to experiment with your bow. You'll find that it will bounce higher if your bow hair is flatter. I find most students I've worked with have a tendency to be too low in the bow for most off-the-string techniques. I feel that ricochet is the one we do highest in the bow (more towards the tip than the frog). Hope this helps!
