Come along on my hiking adventures and explore the Pacific Northwest with me!
Hi. I'm Steve, your guide through the Pacific Northwest. I take you along with me to see waterfalls, scenic vistas, rivers, lakes, and mountains. So if you want to see a hiking channel that shows you the most beautiful parts of the Pacific Northwest then this channel is for you. I let nature do the talking during my hikes. I also give hiking gear reviews and tips as well to help you before you hit the trail.
Since 2015, I have traveled the United States extensively spending time at 24 national parks and countless state parks. Unfortunately, I took no video footage of the hundreds of trails I hiked and the backpacking I did, only a ton of pictures. So I decided it was time to make some videos and take you along with me as I explore the Pacific Northwest.

Mt Hood is stunning from up there!
Absolutely. That's why I couldn't wait to get back there. I was so bummed last year but this year I was able to get clear skies. One of the best views of Hood for sure.
Is that trail ATV friendly? The dirt up top looks 👌
@@adamoakes7567 It's a very short trail. Less than 2 miles to the top. While some sections of the trail is pretty wide the rest is kinda narrow. I've been there twice and never saw an ATV. Maybe the forest road leading to the trailhead would be fun but not the actual trail. The dirt road on top that you see is really just the end of the trail.

Such an epic hike in the Columbia River Gorge!
@@Zoomdak It really is. That hike was on my list for a while. Great views and a nice misty waterfall to end it off. Thanks for watching.
So beautiful! I'm thinking about doing that hike! Would you say it's easy or hard for a beginner hiker?
@@sheenachong6078 Great question. For a beginner hiker I would go with someone. There are multiple river and creek crossings and some are more difficult than others to cross. Also depends on when you do this trail. If you go early summer the water crossings will be tougher because there is more snowmelt but if you go when I went (early September) the crossings are easier. As far as the trail, if you go clockwise like I did, the first 10 miles are a piece of cake. After that the next 20 miles will have some sections with serious elevation gain. This middle part of the trail is the hardest. Last 10 miles are easy (flat) except the last mile uphill back to the lodge. Most of the trail is easy to follow but there are sections that aren't so easy. So being with someone with good navigational skills is important. I would say it would be hard for a beginner hiker going alone but if you go with someone with experience and just do 10 miles per day, difficulty will be moderate but super fun. I also want to mention that your pack weight can make your hike easy or hard so don't go overboard packing. A heavy pack going uphill sucks. Overall, this trail is super beautiful and fun. There is good reason it is a bucket list hike for so many people. As a beginner, bring someone who has backpacked before and stick to 10 miles a day. You will have a blast. I have a video on all the gear I brought if that helps. Hopefully I answered your question.

how long does the gas canister last typically?

Highly recommend for anyone looking to do a short backpacking trip. I definitely went at a great time, early September. Less trafficked, less bugs, and easier water crossings. Thanks for watching. Stunningly beautiful…the entire McKenzie valley is filled with some spectacular scenery,a lot of it accessible with fairly modest effort…
@@stevecopenhaver6152 I'd like to do the McKenzie River Trail. If not this year then next year. It sure is a beautiful area. Thanks for checking out the video. I had a lot of fun on that hike.
I enjoyed your video--brings back some memories of my young adult years. Being born in Longview and spending most of my school years in Kalama, and then moving to Woodland and graduating high school there, I spent a lot of time in my youth traipsing around St. Helens and Adams. St. Helens has by far had the largest place in my life. In 91 I climbed it with a friend, in 93 I did the Loowit (no fees or reservations required--just a sign in wilderness permit station as I recall), with another friend, and in June of '02 I proposed to my girlfriend at the foot of the June Lake waterfall. We married in September of that year and are still married today. It looks like there's a lot more "green" on the northern side of the mountain than there was in 93 when I hiked the Loowit. When we did the Loowit trail, we started either at the Sheep Canyon or Blue Lake trailhead--age and the passage of time prevents me from remembering which one! I remember we bivouacked just off the trail on the northern slopes, and then ended up completing the loop the next day, arriving at our car after dark using flashlights to stay on trail. My hiking partner was starting to have trouble with his knees and was afraid if we camped a second night he might not be able to continue the next day. I'm just getting back into backpacking this year after not having done any trips in several years. Tomorrow I'm leaving my home in central Oregon and heading up to Olympic National Park for a 5 day/4 night 54 mile lollipop loop out of Staircase and heading up the N. Fork Skokomish River. I'll be looping out around Anderson, O'Neil and LaCrosse passes and visiting Marmot and Hart lakes. I might just have to put the Loowit on my list for next year...
Thank you for sharing your backpacking adventures. And that's an awesome proposal you did. Congrats to you and your wife for sticking together. The Loowit trail is definitely not an easy trail but it is very unique. The north side is for sure getting more green. There are still no fees or reservations needed which is nice. I was thinking about hiking around Mt. Adams this year or going around part of it. But I will definitely do the Eagle Creek Trail which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful trails in the U.S. Have a blast in Olympic NP. Never been there. I'm sure it is going to be awesome. It would be cool if you did the Loowit again, especially 3 decades later. Thanks for checking out the video.

Doesn't this have a big hidden waterfall if you continue up the creek?
@@mydearriley The creek has many waterfalls. Many small tumbling falls, a few 20 footers, a 25 footer called Fan Falls, a 50 footer, and a 35 footer. Dog Creek is popular for canyoneering for this reason. I didn't go very far down the creek as I wasn't equipped to do so but it was beautiful for sure.

Another winner dude…wonder if you keep track of your mileage and ascent numbers on these outings-always interesting at the end of the year to see how much ground and elevation you’ve totaled …

@@pyronymph-868 Yeah it's really hot out. I did this hike back in June. Thanks for watching.
Did it about 25 years ago....wonderful experience! I think we took an extra day....my gf at the time was new to back-country travel so we took it easy. I've done the Wonderland trail in '94 and the Round the Mountain trail in '93 so now I need to get to St. Helens!
It is nothing short of a wonderful experience. Great decision to slow it down for your gf given she was new to backpacking. You absolutely must complete the Loowit trail around Helens to complete the full set of mountains. I have a video on that trail if it helps. I am thinking of doing Adams this year and maybe I'll do Eagle Creek which I can't believe I haven't done yet. Wonderland trail next year. I hope you get around to doing the Loowit trail. Let me know how it went.
Where’s the trailhead?
@@theweeknder Stevenson, WA. Trailhead is unmarked. Driving east on Ryan-Allen Rd. right before it crosses with Aalvik Rd. there is a fire hydrant on the right side of road. There is a small area to park on a grass patch. Look for a trail right across from a telephone pole. You can see it in my video. Hope this helps. Would not recommend summer to see as it will be mostly dried up. Winter best time.
how long does this hike take?
Not long at all. It's only about a 1/4 mile to the falls so 1/2 mile total out and back. There is a loop hike as well that starts at the same trailhead to see views overlooking the gorge. Very short as well, about 1/2 mile. If you do both hikes should take less than an hour.

@@PacificNWHiker You bet and thanks for your words as well!!
Is it much of an incline going up? About how long of a hike is it.
@@travelinglovebugs7 It's 3 miles total out and back. So 1.5 miles going up it's about 1,000 ft. of elevation gain. Definitely not easy but it's a short trail and it's all downhill when you are returning to the trailhead. There are some nice viewpoints along the way to stop and rest.
