In the Shadow of Annapurna, Nyeshyang
Filmed back in 1987 and 1988 this 47 minute Super 8 documentary delves into the amazingly beautiful Nyeshyang valley (also more commonly known as the Manang valley) in central Nepal, the lives of the locals Nyeshyangba and some of the wildlife of the area. We (Kea and I) are forever grateful for the great friends we made in this region both before, during and after these trips!

Some selected edited video footage (all hand held )taken during a trip to Spiti in Himachal Pradesh during December 2016. Five different snow leopards were encountered during the 2 week trip. Thanks to Sushil Dorje, Tenzin Dorje, Meme Tsering and Meme Daria.. who were my tracking colleagues in the field. Also thanks to Indrajeet from Spiti United for assisting with organising arrangements.

I just did the Annapurna Circuit. The change is huge and tourism has changed the nature of these villages. The village of Barak looks completely unrecognisable. Thanks for this footage in winters/spring.

Hi Anna, yes those houses are all still standing. The Manang valley ( Nyeshyang) was unaffected by the big earthquake....however quite a few of the Manangi’s filmed have passed on ... cheers Paul

Thank you, Paul O’Connor !! Felt very good to see my grand-mother, my village, my people and the way of life at that time. I only heard through my parents that how wonderful and difficult at the same time the village life was . I am very thankful to you as now I can witness with my own eyes .Please keep uploading!! Orche Tshungta for your reply. I’m glad you enjoyed the film. Everything has 2 sides so your comment about the wonderful and difficult aspect of traditional life in a harsh landscape such as the Himalayan rain shadow.. is very true!

Nostalgia! I walked the full circuit from Dhumre to Pokhara in 1984 and 1986. That is what the place was really like. Now ruined by the road and us tourists. Thank you for the memories, time to dust the slide projector...
