Sandhill Crane Colts 2023
This spring, the Sandhilll crane pair just outside the Swaner EcoCenter tended their two eggs for 33 days, and after all their hard work, we welcomed some of Swaner's newest residents on the morning of May 20, 2023 🐣 The baby cranes are called “colts,” and they’ll stay close to their parents during the first 8-9 months of their lives, then migrate south with them this fall before returning the following spring.
The colts hatch ready to swim and wade, so they were able to leave the nest the day after they hatched. In previous years, the cranes typically return to their nest each evening while the colts are young, but due to the high water levels this year, they've been finding other places to bed down on the Swaner Preserve.
0:00 Cranes celebrate first colt hatching (May 20 around 8 AM)
0:55 Second colt hatching (May 20 around 8 AM)
1:57 Crane cuddles (May 20 around 3 PM)
2:21 Colts leaving the nest (May 21 around 8 AM)

Give thanks to God that the White Man took dominion of the Swaner Preserve from the Shoshones and Utes!! Have you seen how the 'natives' maintain their lands? Not so pretty! By contrast whites have whole armies of stewards, we make preserves, we bring in beavers and present the work on the internet. No other people takes such good care of the lands!

Another observation with regards to the discussion about the impact of beavers and trees. You are correct many trees have evolved survival techniques to deal with beavers. I would also point out that standing snags are also one of the side benefits of beaver due to some trees being flooded and drowned without ever being cut down. These trees become a haven for numerous birds for food and nesting. Woodpeckers and bats also utilize them.

I would imagine the reason you have differences in the growth rate of brown trout in BDAs and actual beaver complexes is due to higher fertility due to the organic load being higher in a beaver complex which in turn would lead to a higher invert load of the type that brown trout would feed on. As an old professional beaver trapper I would always be amazed at the higher invert populations from both terrestrial and aquatic populations. BTW I no long trap beaver and have become a rather large supporter of restoring beaver to the landscape. Over a lifetime that now is more than 60 years I have seen the difference they make when they are abundant on the landscape vs when they have been removed from the landscape.

Great presentation, Marshal, Rhea and Hunter, thank you all very much. So, build it and they will come. Love the progress and initial migration in East Canyon. 1. What is the probability that the mink and other species will also migrate? 2. Years back I helped distribute some 50 millions seeds in the southern portion the Swanner Preserve. How is that developing and will that affect the introduction of beaver to the BDA's? DO you plan on planting cotton woods along the stream beds? 3. 100 BDA's in the next few years. Rhea, has Marshal determined where those 100 BDA's will be placed? A follow on comment and question....for those living on Old Ranch Road...Respectfully, I have four sump pumps on the lower portion of my property. These have never been active since there is no ground water seepage under my property for the seven years plus I have lived here. With regards to the deep aquafer and in essence, two water tables, what were and what are those levels then and now. With the 100 additional BDA's what anticipated changes to both the deep and shallow water tables can we expect? 4. In regards to the temperature changes due to the installation of the BDA's early on it was discussed that the resulting cooler waters would vary the population of the native and non-native fish species. Specifically, I thought we anticipated an increase in native fish and a decrease in non-native fish. The presentation did not seem to reflect those changes. Can we expect those types of changes in the future? 5. I notices in the summer of 2020 and February this year in 2021 that there have been a very noticeable over flight over the water shed in the Kimball Creek in front of my place. 6. With the increased water shed last year in 2020 my neighbors and I have noticed the presence of mosquitos. I there any studies or mitigation plans for mosquitos? R Len Starbeck

We're lucky to have her at SBS, not only because of her expertise in studying pollinators and other conservation topics, but because she runs our internship program, including the Community Engaged Learning (CEL), a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address community needs that relate to course topics. A decent solution to both global warming and air pollution is to stop burning wood. Burning is actually neither renewable nor sustainable, contrary to what most environmentalists think. However, letting wood rot is both. A fallen leaf takes both a year to grow and also rot. A branch that takes a decade to grow should be given a decade to rot. This gives time for the atmospheric CO2 and methane levels to adjust and is truly renewable. Time also gives life like fungi, insects and small animals a chance to have their part in sustaining biodiversity. This sustains life on our planet. Fire based natural systems are sustained when an occasional wild fire cracks open tough seeds and also releases nutrients from grass and low bush. An ancient forest giant that took a thousand years to grow and accumulate carbon should be given an equal time to slowly release that carbon and methane. Burning it up as firewood in one season shows little consideration for renewability and sustainability. People who care about the environment wear layers of clothes for individual heat in a colder house and have the programmable thermostat set low to show respect to neighbors and the planet.

Watch out for the folks from Bangor, Maine that brings out the best of wood burning comments. My apologies to an otherwise serious issue. From the Bangor Daily News. My grandpa lived to almost 49 and burned wood. Maybe the gubermint should look into breathing and eating as being killers also. I live in a leaky sieve house where the fresh air is always cold so I will burn wood until you pry the log from my cold dead hands. When the power goes out, we just set around and watch the ice form inside the windows and die cold, penniless and alone without a wood fire. My grandma lived to 101 with a wood cook stove and some whiskey. To tell the truth we all think her longitude was due to being smoked and pickled. Wood can be harvested off of one’s own land so no fat cat’s can get rich off of one’s own wood. Many people will have starved to death because they spent there food money trying to stay warm. There is some sort of weird pride that wood burners have in drafty homes, smoky, leaky, inefficient stoves and doing things the “old way” because everything was better back then, right? Things were perfect the way they were. I cannot and will not improve anything, like my asbestos insulation, lead paint and wood stove. I prefer hemp pellets to get warm and high at the same time. Keep smoking, drink beer, eat fatty foods, don’t wear a seat belt, don’t exercise, drink pop every day and burn wood to clean up the gene pool. Don’t you cry babies have anything else to cry about, like BPA in plastic milk bottles and those cancer causing chemicals in rubber bed liners?
