Forging a Viking Era Battle Axe | Blacksmithing
This videos shows the process of a viking battle axe being made by hand, the body of the axe is made out of mild steel and the bit is made out of an old file. Originally this axe was supposed to be a great dane axe but after not having enough material i decided a frankish/norman design.

Keep it up 👍
Nice job
Yo perdiendo el tiempo acá.
How did you make the forge welds stick? I have been trying my darndest to make an axe with a method similar to this, yet no matter what the forgewelds always seem to fail even when I get the steel far hotter than is shown here. Am I missing something?
Make sure the surfaces of where the weld is gonna be are clean, prevent having any scale on those. Don't forget to use a flux, most people use borax, you can also use sand but that has a lower melting point.
@@AxlPBlacksmith I see. What kind of cleaning should I give that surface and should I apply the borax immediately after it?
@@leetheeagle7264 Just grind it smooth and make sure that most of the scale is off, the grit doesnt really matter. Apply borax when the steel is at a red-orange color, wear a mask tho since its nasty stuff( ive gotten really sick from it). When the steel is at like an orange - yellow color, hit the metal a few times to set the weld, then do the actual forgeweld.
@@AxlPBlacksmith I think I get it, thank you. By the way, this should work in a gas forge too right?
@@leetheeagle7264 Yeah, i forge with propane.

Getting it done!
Nice job. I just recently did my first compound grind on a straight razor. It was educational. lol. Did you taper the tail of the blade much? I haven’t gotten to the handle yet on mine.
The tail on this razor tapers down to 2mm, so half of the thickness of the spine of the blade itself. Don't forget the handle has like a small wedge at the end so the scales are kinda bent and under tension.
@@AxlPBlacksmith thank you for the answer and tip. I have been a little apprehensive to start the handle. Also a bit busy. But will get it eventually. lol.
Beautiful Knifes! 👍
Very nice
That's shark for a knife but dull for a straight razor
Tell me how you know its dull since it shaved pretty well last time i used it.
As someone who hones straight razors and has forged a couple, he is correct. The edge on a straight razor is so fine cutting paper like you did would destroy the edge. There is a big difference between "razor" sharp for knives and actual razor sharp. You should be tree topping arm hairs, not cutting paper.
@@shawnfeile Cutting paper is not that good for the edge, sure. But it does not destroy it. The ideal test to see if its sharp is to actually shave with it.
Well done.
BIGTIME shortcut from someone who does razors for a living. Cut your blanks in a diagonal line. The resulting taper if WAY faster to forge into a tail/handle.
I'll try that out, thanks.
Awesome channel.
Thanks!
Amazing to watch 👍👍
The thing about a straight razor is you never know that you cut yourself until you see the blood 😂 Nice work!
Nice work FOR A BELGIAN
great work, you should get a large magnet and put it on the bottom of the horn of ur anvil, it reduces ringing alot. Could use a welding magnet, I use just a large one from an old large Speaker
I bought some from harbor freight, they're a little janky, but they reduce the ringing so much!
Awesome work!
Nice work! Do you mainly do straight razors?
Not really, this one was my first succeeded attempt.
@@AxlPBlacksmith nice great work! So do you usually forge kitchen knives or what is your main thing you forge?
@@seanstapelfeld Mostly survival knives and historical recreations, i'm currently working on an other video involving wrought iron and carbon steel puukko's.
good job Axl!
nice dude ! Cool knife, and the quench was pretty good too, not too hot
Decent looking knife, where did you buy it? Because that isnt the piece of steel you hacked on...🤨
I ended up having more material then i was planning on, so i've ground it off. I'll take that as a compliment though, thanks.
@dvig3261 yeah you're right, it looks whiter than when he forged it, he's like a mastermind trickster of evil
Very nice.
