TVS is a conservative company and are good in manufacturing Their quality is good. They are on a long play I think. The premium bikes are there to build a brand premium. It would be difficult to understand European sensibilities in India. They’d design there, do rnd and manufacture in India possibly. Let’s wait and watch.

Hi Iain, they were custom made. I bought them from a 961 owner who bought them second hand from another 961 owner a couple of years ago. If you are looking for a rack best place to check is accessnorton forum or the 961 Commando owners group on Facebook. The Givi panniers are monolock system so any monolock panniers will fit, I have the 30 litre Trekker Dolomiti panniers. Cheers Jonathan

I have a few questions please?? Which are considered more desirable? The latest TVS models or the previous incumbent models? (Did the whole Garner affair leave a nasty after taste on ownership of his models)? Also which era (Garner or TVS) are more reliable (or considered equals)? Finally, are there any differences between the Garner built bikes and the TVS bikes? I know that TVS did mention during their takeover that they found many QC issues with all the models and were working to correct them (especially in the V4). Thank you! Great vids… keep it up 👍🏻

Hi thanks for your feedback and questions. I have two 961’s, both Donington bikes. If I was in the market for a 961 now, I would go for a TVS mainly because of the factory and dealer support. I love both my 961’s, but it can prove a headache fixing things or finding someone to help. Motorvated Ltd in Derby is the “go to” place for all things Donington, other than that you need to be handy with a spanner yourself. I wouldn’t say the Garner affair tarnished 961 ownership, if anything Norton has gone a lot more corporate these days (just my opinion), the Donington owners tend to stick together and help one another out. It’s a nice community. I have no experience of TVS bikes and have heard of owners who have had problems, but as mentioned above I would go with their bikes mainly for the support. In terms of differences I am not aware of any major changes between Donington and TVs bikes, most changes I believe are in the quality of the parts manufacturing and sourcing. I hope that helps, and thanks a lot for the support! Cheers Jonathan

Are you looking to loose over £17k like one #Norton #V4SV owner? The solution presented by Norton Motorcycles to the long-running V4SS saga raises significant concerns, both in terms of financial impact and long-term value and your article is a misrepresentation of the true position. Financial Analysis of the Proposed Swap Recent transactions highlight the adverse financial implications for V4SS owners. A NUML creditor's decision to accept a V4SS for V4SV swap, along with an additional payment of £10,000 from the V4SS owner, resulted in a staggering loss of £17,304. Here's a breakdown of the costs involved: Cost of Norton V4SS: £44,000 Cost of Swap: £10,000 NUML Creditor Dividend: £6,696 Sales Price of V4SV: £30,000 Selling the V4SS for £7,304 would have left the owner in a comparable financial position, which clearly indicates the undervaluation of the V4SS in the proposed deal. Even the most defective V4SS would have a value greater than £7,304. A further compounding factor is the V4SV residual value plummeting in value. The vast majority of NUML creditor who took the swap option did so with the express intention of immediate disposal, the impact of this is evident in the secondary market. The sheer volume of delivery mileage secondary market bikes with discounts of up to 30% from list then impacts the ability to sell new V4SV’s. Long-Term Value Potential of the V4SS Despite its flaws, the V4SS holds significant potential for long-term value, much like other historically significant motorcycles. Consider the following points: Rarity and Historical Significance: The V4SS, with its limited production and tumultuous history, could become a valuable collector's item, similar to the Bimota V-Due. Engineering and Design: The V4SS features advanced engineering and a distinctive design that could attract enthusiasts, akin to the Vincent Black Shadow or Ducati 750 GT. Nostalgia and Brand Heritage: The Norton brand's rich heritage can elevate the V4SS's status over time, making it a sought-after piece of motorcycle history. Restoration and Aftermarket Solutions: As with other problematic motorcycles, aftermarket solutions can address initial defects, enhancing the V4SS's reliability and desirability. Enthusiasts like Stuart Bodycote are already seeking restoration options that Norton Motorcycles has yet to provide. Investment Potential: Collectors often value bikes with controversial histories. The narrative of a flawed yet cherished bike adds to its mystique and potential value. Comparative Analysis of Similar Bikes Historically, several motorcycles with initial issues have gained significant value over time: Bimota V-Due: Initially plagued by reliability problems, it is now highly valued for its rarity and unique engineering. Vincent Black Shadow Series C: Despite initial reliability issues, it has become an iconic and highly collectible motorcycle. Ducati 750 GT: Overcame mechanical problems to become highly valued for its historical significance. Harley-Davidson AMF Era Models: Initially suffered from poor quality control but are now collectible due to their historical context. Conclusion The Norton V4SS, despite its current challenges, has the potential to achieve high long-term value due to its rarity, engineering significance, and brand heritage. By recognising these future values and making informed decisions, we can preserve and appreciate the legacy of the V4SS for generations to come. The critical question remains: why should V4SS owners accept a significant loss when restoring the V4SS to its iconic status is in the best interests of both the owners and Norton Motorcycles?

Starter companies mostly run at a substantial loss for many years, sometimes decades. Just look at Zero Motorcycles books, and they're still in business. Norton can't even get the turning cycle on the Commando right. Their bikes are mainly form over function. And thats one of their main problems.

Make it £25k ish and I think it would have a huge impact. And as others have mentioned, something like an old school 500 single would be almost unique and very tempting. Fingers crossed.

A$30,000 for an Indian made Norton? What are they smoking? You can buy a new BMW GS for that. To ask a premium price you need a premium bike. Here in Australia the Consumer Law requires a statutory warranty of 10 years, and parts and servicing for that time as well. That knocks out the crap from the market.

Norton has always been 'smoke and mirrors'...a simple vessel to enrich the 'board' members through receiving lavish salaries at the expense of the investors. They will go bankrupt and will rise again...just like sham-poo: Apply. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. BTW, the aftermarket parts bin specials with a Norton sticker on the tank are, to me, barely eye candy and terrible motorcycles and especially so given their msrp. Huge Fail and a patent PASS.

Norton should change the game and lease their bikes and open cycle shops in the empty shopping centres unit to advertise their products. Leasing locks people in servicing and maintenance and Norton gets the profit , not some back alley fly by night . Stop hiding and start showing of a quality product at an affordable and save long term payment plan that doesn’t end with customer feeling they’re being ripped off . My friend bought a brand new £20,000 ,30 months ago and took it back to the dealer for a trade in for another one and was told “ We Don’t want your bike “ the bike has 8,000 miles and in mint condition . Norton has to stop the rot by changing the game .

I thought the role of the UK factory was to raise the profile of the brand while the owner in India developed a new range of cheaper mass produced bikes in factories in India. Where are the new models ??

They are not following whats popular. £45k sports bikes and cafe racers are not selling like adventure or enduro bikes. Then the price is an epic issue, Ducati make £10k bikes and £80k bikes. Buying into the brand is achievable. Where as with Norton it's £17k. They need a 600cc adventure bike retailing at £10k. The Cayenne saved Porsche from oblivion so they need to re-imagine the brand.
