Part 3, oiling and assembly of an English lever platform escapement coming soon
Oiling and assembly procedures for an English lever platform escapement.
Unfortunately we've lost footage for part two, so rather than scrap the series, we'll just move on. Part 3 coming soon.

Investigating an English lever platform escapement.

Join me in the disassembly and assessment of this English lever platform escapement. In this real-time point of view footage, I think out loud as I uncover some questionable repair history, and decide the correct next steps to restore this clock.

Building up a worn verge knife edge. I make use of the Orion 100c micro-welder to do so.
Repivot a platform escape arbor

This is a new technique to me, but so far it's been flawless every time. The carbide drill is 0.2mm, and I choose to file the pivot to size rather than use the lathe. This is just personal preference, it can be done either way.

A quick (and very sped up) video of me repivotting a fusee centre arbor on the 8mm watchmakers lathe, using a few simple tools.

    Great work and really loved your camera work on this. I made a video on how to use the Jacot tool and all of a sudden the price of them went up. This little device is much better and I have one and use it often.

    Hammering anything held in the headstock is really bad for the bearings.

    • @ScottJeffery
      @ScottJeffery Před 7 lety

      jim Truesdale it is. Although we're only tapping it in lightly here, if you need to hammer it hard, then it's the wrong size for the hole.

    • @wechbros4558
      @wechbros4558 Před 7 lety

      there is no bearings on this sort of lathe.

    • @ScottJeffery
      @ScottJeffery Před 7 lety

      +wechbros they have what are called taper bearings, but not ball bearings. Taper bearings are actually very good for lathes, they can be adjusted for wear and take longitudinal (hammering) forces better than most ball bearings. As far as I'm aware, anyway.

    • @wechbros4558
      @wechbros4558 Před 7 lety

      You'r right, sorry. I learn a new word, "taper bearing" thx :)

    • @urvintage2993
      @urvintage2993 Před 5 lety

      You can see the spindle moving sideways when you tap and use your graver - things are not good! At best you can adjust the play in the spindle - worst, the bearings are already shoot!

    I just purchased a cowell 90 lathe not the basic one. I want to make a new arbor for the escapement pallet, and pivot it. Would it be best to drill out arbor, and insert pivot wire, or turn the pivots, so it is one piece of metal. will also have to learn how to use the lathe.

    • @ScottJeffery
      @ScottJeffery Před 7 lety

      +Stephen Baguley you're definitely better off turning a pivot on the arbor. Drilling and repivotting should be considered a last resort repair. Hold the arbor in the lathe chuck as close as possible to where you are turning the pivot or it will try to climb up an over the tool if it is long enough to bend
