When I was a young teenager, I snuck into a theater that was playing “Tommy,” and was blown away by it. That scene with Ann Margaret rolling around in baked beans was unbelievable. I saw “the devil, “for the first time and was similarly blown away. That is an amazing movie.

I always feel sad when the credits roll on both movies. It's like the great and eventful nights portrayed in the movies are over, like the real passing of time. It feels like something's lost, even though I can start the movie again.

Ken was a legend..'Lair of the white worm' was one of my favourites..based on Bram Stoker's last novel,Ken made an average book into a great film..also worth mentioning 'Rainbow' and 'Salome's Last Dance'

I am looking for a horror movie from 1970's or 1980's, where the killer uses pay phones to call a goth punk rock T.V. dance show with live hard rock band and live dancers. Killer moves through the city killing people and calling the goth rock dance show inbetween kills.The host of the show ends up being the killer's mother. The killer calls the show between muders. The dancers dance the same dance through entire movie, they dance like zombies. The rock band plays the entire song through whole entire movie. The guitar riff for the song is really good and pretty heavy. The song was in Eb E flat. The movie starts out with punks packed in a car going to the rock T.V. show and the band playing that killer riff. FR. The movie is from the 1970's or early 1980's. I think it was 1970's because I couldnt believe that cool heavy riff could have existed. Or maybe I am mistaken and it was early 1980's

"The Devils" and "The Music Lovers" are two of my favourite films of the 70`s. "Women In Love" and "Altered States" are remarkable at opposite ends of the Russell spectrum. I love his work, and miss him. Thank you for this overview of a unique talent.

I had to watch this for a film class and f, it was so weird.

I went to an all boys high school during the 80's and hated every minute of it. Sadistic Priests who would lash or punish us and banned music deemed satanic by them. My high school days sucked for me. Hated every minute of it and would not want to relive it. However, when I went away to Canada as an International student and experienced the heavy metal and grunge scene over there did I really miss those days in my life. Best days of my life was from 1990 to 1995 more or less. My days in Canada after high school. Now, my nostalgia is for that time. Screw high school days!! Meant nothing to me.

It´s interesting that the first Bruegel painting which you show at two minute mark (The Hunters in the Snow) is also the first of 24 frames in final movie of Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. Two distinctive and unique filmmakers apparently shared the same inspiration. Two of my three favourite directors, the other one being Werner Herzog. Thanks for your video!

One challenging film maker, have to be in the right frame of mind to watch with all its stunning, brutal compositions that can put you in a trance. Really enjoyed the comparisons to artists (Grosz, Hopper) that one might expect but the Bruegel comparison, was a lesson in itself. Thanks. Subscribed.

Imagine my surprise when looking up conversations on Roy Andersson and I find that you had a media analysis channel before Ordinary Things. Thank you for this, it was a way more insightful video than I expected to find.

Schrader`s inimitable film is a fascinating contrast, and melding of cultural and artistic styles. Ken Ogata`s portrayal is filled with both emotional intensity and detached alienation, it is as enigmatic as the man himself. Mishima is my favourite novelist, I remember how thrilled I was when I heard a film of his life was going to be made. In the years since Mishima`s death I wondered whether Nagisa Oshima would be the director to bring his story to the screen, the influence of Mishima is so strong in Oshima`s wonderful film "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" . Paul Schrader was a surprising frontrunner to tell this tale, I thought so till I saw his film "Cat People" which seemed thematically and texturally to share a similarity with Mishima`s own aesthetic, indeed early in the film a scanning shot shows a copy of a Mishima biography lying on the bedside table of one of the leading characters. Mishima was a man of masks, he once said "Anyone who wishes to know me should read my books" Schrader concentrates on the writer, and the imaginings of his fiction, in highly stylised, and intensely colourised chapter excerpts. The contrast of styles does so much to take us into the creative worlds of Mishima`s imaginings. This is an extraordinary biopic, Schrader eschews the binary narrative of lineal progression, a series of vignettes, and excerpts from Mishima`s major novels, reveal the themes and complex preoccupations of a conflicted artist, and obsessively driven man. The film is a visual wonder to behold, John Bailey`s luminous photography, Eike Ishioka`s exquisite set designs, Michael Chandler and Tomoyo Oshima`s incisive editing, allied to a wonderful Philip Glass soundtrack, and first and foremost Paul Schrader`s visual eye, creative aesthetic, and compositional innovativeness. A wonderful film. I agree, Schrader`s Masterpiece.
