Lost in the Fray: Unraveling the History of Punch Needle
This webinar was hosted by punch needle artist, Oxford-certified instructor, and founder of Punch Needle World, Micah Clasper-Torch. It was recorded on March 23rd, 2021.
Where did punch needle originate? How was it originally used? Why is it having a resurgence today?
As it turns out, there are actually 3 traditional forms of punch needle that inform our current understanding of the craft today, each with their own distinctly different origins and purpose. In this hour long webinar, Micah will walk you through the history of these three crafts, the various tools and materials used for each, and how modern interpretations have combined aspects of these historical crafts to create the exciting new techniques and styles that you see today.
Whether you are a new puncher looking to understand the difference in techniques to help you know where to begin, or you are an experienced puncher who is curious to learn more about the history of your craft -- this webinar will provide you a deeper level of insight into the fascinating world of punch needle!

    Do you secure the threads in any way after punching is complete, or is it relying purely on friction to keep them in place?

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před měsícem

      No need to secure your threads with glue (especially if you use rug wool) punch needle stays in place due to the tension of all those loops tightly packed between the weave of the fabric!

      @oddbirdMusic Před měsícem

      @@PunchNeedleWorld Thank you -- do you ever clip the threads on one side so it ends up looking like a rug, or do you leave the long thread intact?

    I am just wondering if there are any specific qualities you look for in a yarn, say for a cushion or stool cover? I know you want wool for floor rugs, but how avoid other projects? I’m also speaking about the finish of the yarn, if there is a difference, like the twist for instance.

    Is it recommended to use the flat stitches as the front? I tried it and the piece puffs up, does not stay flat on table or wall. How do I prevent it, or make it remain flat? Thank you

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před rokem

      Hi, great question! No, the flat stitches are NOT meant to be the front of this textile! Doing so is a very recent adaptation that some artists decide to use in their pieces, but it should not be used this way for rugs because the loops will prevent the carpet from laying flat, which means people will trip on the sides. The flat stitches are also the weakest part of the textile, and if something catches on them they will pull out. This won't happen to the looped side, even without glue. For artwork on the wall this is less of a concern and the flat stitches can be used as an artistic choice, but this has never been a part of the traditional technique.

    Hi So the top of the piece is not the side you want to show? I prefer the top to the bottom.

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před rokem

      Yes, technically the flat stitches (the side that you work from) is the back of the textile and if you are making a rug, you should definitely use the looped pile side as the top of the rug. However, when it comes to artwork or other contemporary creative applications of this craft, the side you choose to show is up to you as an artistic choice! It is worth noting that using the flat stitches as the "front" of the piece is only a decision that has been made by crafters in recent years to mimic the look of embroidery and is not a part of the traditional technique or history of this textile form.

    Can you do needle punching without a frame?

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před rokem

      Thanks for the question! I hesitate to say you "can't" do this, because some people might try this and say it's possible -- but punching without a frame is not practicing the craft correctly. A frame (whether it is a gripper frame, carpet tack frame, etc.) is an essential tool to hold your material open and in place so you can get the correct stitch lengths without it shifting. It makes the craft both easier and safer to practice. Hope that helps to clarify!

    I inherited my grandmother's circa 1950's rug punching project 2/3rd completed and I've been learning how to complete the project. I've set up the frame and am working on the project --I have the Columbia Minerva De Lux rug needle much like the oxford punch needle and the actual rug is a 36'' and 22'' Springfield rug. It is a semi circle with flowers.

    I was at Black Sheep this summer and bought my first punch needle, a hoop and some monk cloth. I am ecstatic about this new hobby. I just finished my first piece tonight and going to enter into our fair tomorrow. I bought a second oxford punch needle that arrived yesterday, a #10 to do the water in the scene. I want to write up a little bit of history for the fair so I found your video. Thank you so much for this video. I'm anxious to learn more. My project Iis wool and alpaca fiber from our farm. I spin and dye it. I also added silk, rose, and bamboo fibers to blend with my sheep and alpaca wool. I would post my rug picture but I don't know how. Thanks again.

    Great video! I've been learning about punch needle for the past couple of months and for the first time made a wall hanging. My question is why does my finalised piece keeps folding at the edges when I take it out of the hoop? I used a round embroidery hoop as a frame (10 inch hoop), monks cloth and yarn. Not sure if it is because it's a rounded shape or I made some beginner's mistake. Thanks for the content both here and at instagram!

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před rokem

      Punch needle curls up when you take it off the frame due to the density of the loops in the fabric! This is natural and expected. Punch needle work needs to be pressed and finished after being removed from the frame to make it lay flat.

    • @PunchNeedleWorld
      @PunchNeedleWorld Před rokem

      Glue is not necessary for punch needle when done with wool rug yarn! If you want to use craft yarns that require glue then I would recommend spot cleaning only, or diluting a washable fabric glue with water and using that to secure your stitches.
