These are NOT book reviews, or even reviews of editions. Just quick looks to help you make a purchase decision or to rant about something I am stoked on.
I collect small press books and talk about them constantly, so my friends bullied me into making some videos and here we are. Do not expect high effort, I would rather be reading.
Also I like dogs ok bye.

By (surprisingly) popular demand, a quick and dirty look at The Folio Society's new edition of Trainspotting, by Irvine Welsh. Introduced by John Sutherland, Illustrated by Nicole Rifkin. Let me know if you want to see more books.
4000£ in the UK this in the used market as it’s all sold. You are INCREDIBLY blessed and cursed at the same time to have received it in this situation and this edition.
Copies of this are selling on ebay for over $5,000. If I suddenly found myself in possession of one of these I'd sell it for a nice profit.
more videos!
how do you get the bookmark?
Came with the book from Folio Society.
This was to the point and not filled with unnecessary banter, so thanks for sharing your Murakami FS collection (so far) really hope for them all to come out with hopefully a split version of 1Q84 Hope your thumb heals quickly! Was it cut tearing into your book delivery?
Haha, I don't remember what cut me but you are likely correct. Would also LOVE to see a split 1Q84 from FS.
I wonder how you would feel about Suntup’s Hell House. The numbered edition is bound in Ostrich Leg leather
So, how do you really feel about leather?
I couldn't help myself.. I missed the boat on the $1500 launch price... picked it up on eBay in mint condition for $3400... some are asking as much as $5400 at ABE. .. and I swear if I hear one more mention of "the leather: .we get it, you hate leather .. too bad for thousands of years books and leather have been a thing.
yeah guy sounded like an absolute weiner from wein town
Even for Folio Society, these were overpriced at £1000, I can't believe people are paying multiple thousands for them.
@@ActuallyJamesS I mean there is a lot of work that went into them, and their print / binding quality is quite impressive ... all done in the UK.. not a bad value at their original price... the market seems to think the were cheap, since they're selling for 3x the price now
@@Sams911 Yeah, well, the “market” also paid $400 for Gamestop stock and $60k for bitcoin. Point is the markup on these editions is far beyond the markup on a usual luxury Folio, they simply use the sheer fame of LOTR to inflate what they would normally charge. There’s no increase in quality between a £300 Folio limited edition set and this £1000 set, only price.
these are the nicest folio society "standard editions" imo.
I'm eagerly anticipating your upcoming videos!
Please be careful with those.
Beautiful
You said no one from Folio Society is watching this but the irony is I just finished watching a small youtuber reviewing Anansi Boys from Folio Society and they commented 😂 so I wouldn't be so sure! Anyway, stunning books! Especially the Anansi Boys... I think I'm going to pull the trigger and treat myself
Treat yourself, you deserve it!
Have u heard of any news that folio society will release the Hobbit and Silmarillion as a matched set to this LE LOTR?
I have heard tell of a Hobbit LE with Lee illustrations, but nothing yet on the Silmarillion.
@@HarveySwick Oh, u give me hope.
I want this book but I don’t wanna pay 240 😢
Open to buying this from you, but no worries if not.
Just realized you’re planning to keep it from your friend. Thanks!
Damn, that looks amazing. If they would publish it in German, I'd buy it (not, because I can't read English, but because I prefer books in their original language as long as I can read that language).
I want these so bad... you have no idea how lucky you are to inherit these from your best friend. That is an incredible person. I have to pay double over the price to get these. Hopefully one day I will. But I can't afford it at all right now, and I'm a huge Tolkien fan.
The price will only increase over time, so if you want it, get it asap.
You prefer this version over centipede press? I’m quite shocked. But again you said from an ease of reading perspective
Yeah, it's just easier to read. CP is a little too big for most, I reckon. The CP edition is superior in every other way.
centipede press is nicer but is it 3/4x nicer? I dont really think so, this edition is the best quality/money ratio.
You giving this copy away? Let me know If so!
@@breal6910lol i am not giving it away, but hey you shot your shot. No harm done!
The one who has the most expensive editions is the one who doesn't want it.
Would you be interested in selling this?
Hadn't realised there was a bio of Pratchett. I'll have to pick it up.
Oh, be sure, we do cringe. By the first minute it seems you'll kick them out of the box.
Fortunately they are built like tanks! Books are meant to be handled, even by fumbling idiots like me.
sell it to someone who will appreciate it
I agree completely!
Damn I need rich friends too !! Sorry about your best friend though…
Haha, he would appreciate your comment!
I like centipede press but only buy paperbacks on principle that books are meant for reading. And while hardbacks are great for displaying, they aren’t built for reading, not any more anyway. If you can’t squeeze it into your coat pocket for a spot of lunch time reading it’s not worth the time of day to even think about buying it.
Fair enough! I read all my Centipedes but I also never leave my house anymore. :)
I mostly agree about your view on paperbacks but there is something to be said for buying pretty versions of your favorite books even if just for vanity's sake
@@Lucarioguild7 yeah I do concede that is the case and the book does look lovely.
I bought the dune copies from centipede and I’m reading them. Books are meant to be read and I’ll never buy a book just to display it
Thanks! Great!
Banks died 10 years ago now just FYI. So definitely no more books on the horizon.
Correct, BUT, maybe not definitely. I'd heard Ken Macleod, who I believe is still in charge of the estate, discussing having notes fleshed out into either short stories or another book, but this was a year or two ago and nothing ever came from it. Either way, I certainly didn't remember any of that while filming!
@@HarveySwick that could be cool. Ken is releasing a book of culture illustrations compiled from Iains work this year I believe.
Hi - thanks for review! Are the illustrations glossy or matte?
Matte. Feels like the same paper that the text pages are on, unlike the standard editions which have a more glossy paper for the illustrations.
Looks REALLY nice!!!
