    YES, to be in the competitive field of 'commercial art' (cartooning is one aspect of) as Mr. Joe Kubert taught...BE VERSATILE. (I was a member of the first class of Kubert School) If one can't be a 'syndicated cartoonist' (competing with many other TOP cartoonists submitting ideas to a newspaper syndicate) Go where there is less competition. Create a specific comic strip for a diet club newspaper and TA--DAAAH one created a comic strip and got it published, or any local publication. If one can't be a visual artist in an ad agency, work in a small print shop ... or in this day and age... web design firm. In my era (haha) the term was paste up production, and with that I got to work in a community newspaper group... paste up of text and image BUT the editors allowed me to provide editorial type cartoons now and again, NO COMPETITION. When desktop publishing came along, I worked as a page paginate of a community paper and again got to provide editorial type cartoons. PASTE UP led to desktop publishing in a print firm... where I basically was designing and paste up 'on screen.' I could proofread, and was hired as a proofreader in a small ad agency. AS JOE KUBERT instructed (and other instructors) BE VERSATILE. Just be able to work... and if you are working within an area LIKED... you won't feel like you are working. DRAW ALWAYS said Joe... which in his wisdom means... if 'visual communicator' is the interest... you won't learn about the field by taking a job stocking shelves in retail (not that there is anything wrong with stocking shelves in retail) BUT... sometimes coming into 'reality' of one's own place...WORKER... ONE CAN SAY: yes, I was a commercial artist and cartoonist in a very competitive field.

    • @elizabethambielli610
      @elizabethambielli610 Před 6 měsíci

      The best competition is 'me, myself, I' . . . trying to do 'a bit better' with the NEXT cartoon assignment. This 'hard look' is possible because of the teaching of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. Yes, of course, it was helpful to see 'the competition' and their skills... but do not judge oneself by the others. As Joe and other illustrators advised: it what you create can be sold to someone...YOU SUCCEEDED! Effective storytelling is as effective if one uses 'stick figures' to draw the story. If there is someone who likes stick figures... you sold your story. What I'm saying is it is good to know the competition and one's own abilities ... but if one can't draw AS GOOD as those students in the class ... does not mean you have to give up the idea of being a cartoon illustrator. You may not be meant for multi panel comic book work, but perhaps you fit in fine with newspaper comic strips (syndicated or local publications) OR maybe one panel 'gag' cartoons for magazines (tough area to break into) or one panel humor or editorial type cartooning, which works well for greeting card art, of ... creating a one panel cartoon for a brochure, flier... or website design firm, or in my time a print shop, where one can offer a cartoon to the flier, brochure, etc. DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE BETTER COMPETITION surrounding you at any school... find 'your niche' and then COMPETE with your own self in doing the job as best you can, then improving on the NEXT JOB, and next, next, next. (The Kubert School advice was also...don't dawdle over commercial art ... meet the deadline given... it is commercial art, and not meant to hang in a museum. GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS with the illustration and you will have succeeded...THEN do better NEXT TIME... don't dawdle)

    • @ComicBookSchool
      @ComicBookSchool Před 6 měsíci

      Excellent advice! Were you really part of the first class at the Kubert School? That's amazing. Tell me more.

    • @elizabethambielli610
      @elizabethambielli610 Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, Mr. Buddy Scalera, I was one of the 13 graduates of the first class of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. (in Sept. 1976, the original class orientation day had about 22 students, then just a few months into the course 3 went elsewhere, one was injured in some kind of accident and had to drop out and then there was 19. after the first year some went back home to their home state: one to Wisconsin, one back home (Jersey) leaving 17. Before the official graduation, 3 more left (for reasons only known to Joe and them) That left 14...but there must be one I'm missing but at the final graduation ceremony of a local diner... there was 13 graduates. I like to 'kid' that I graduated 13th in my class (haha) meaning I was not of same style as those looking to do comic book realistic illustrating. My style falls in the category, as spoken by instructor Hy Eisman, ghost comic strip artist for so many comic strips; Smokey Stover, Lil Iodine, recently Popeye the sailor man, Archie...my cartoon style was BIGFOOT ... as in Mort Walker. I was 18 years of age, just out of high school, did take a correspondence course while in high school for 'fun' . . . BUT knowledge of cartoon illustration was 'little.' At the first class orientation, I asked what a blue pencil was for. (haha) With graduation in 1978, which in school time is 18 months... I surely did improve lettering, inking, idea creation, and drawing (simple drawing as I did). 18 months didn't make me too comfortable out in the graphic art world and I was permitted to take the 2nd year again 1979 to May 1980. Then, In Sept. 1980, I was hired as paste up production to a composing firm affiliated with 7 community newspapers, had Thursday off so I sold a comic strip to a diet club, club paper and to another specialty local paper. So, as it is said, the KUBERT SCHOOL is work, one does improve, and one learns where to go to show the work. Not everyone can work in comic books but there's a place if one seeks. NO REGRETS about the Kubert School.
