Arlene Brittian Owens - Oral History Interview, May 2024
In loving memory of Arlene Brittian Owens 1945-2024
Dear friends of Boca Raton history, we are very saddened to report to you the loss of our friend and longtime supporter Arlene Brittian Owens. Arlene’s family came to little Boca Raton back in 1929. Her father served as a caretaker for Mr. Von Holst in what is now Old Floresta. Part of his duties included rounding up the huge rattlesnakes that once roamed the neighborhood.
Arlene was born in 1945 at Broward General Hospital-the closest at the time. Her excellent memory spanned back through the incredible changes that the little farm town with a big fancy hotel experienced over the years. You can find out more about Arlene and her memories through our CZcams channel. Just go to our website bocahistory.org and click on the CZcams link at the bottom of the site.
Arlene was one of the first people I met when I came to work at BRHS 22 years ago. She was then on the board of trustees, one of the only members with longtime roots in the community. In 2016, the Society recognized her service with the Myrtle Butts Fleming Award, our highest honor, for service to the BRHS. I think that really tickled her. She introduced me to the Boca Raton Pioneer Club and all of the wonderful “old timers” who have supplied me with info ever since. She certainly seemed to know everybody and their family history!
Arlene, we will miss your witty personality, your acerbic political analysis, and wonderful storytelling. Don’t worry-we have carefully digitized your memories and family images for the use of future generations-your legacy will continue!

I was born in West Palm Beach in 1958 and my father and grandfather were building in Boca Raton starting in 61. I can’t believe how many cars there are on the road and in the parking lot and parking on the street I can clearly see and remember all the open spaces, but Boca really seems to be very busy on this particular day

Dorthy Wilkens mandated a population cap of 40,000 by down zoning property. My 8 unit lot became a duplex lot. A government "taking" without compensation. When Arvida sued, they removed the cap but didn't restorethe zoning for the little guy.

Tracking on Google maps and it is now all high rises and junk malls. What a shame. It was quite quaint then. When I was little my parents took me to Florida in 1959. Orlando was all orange groves and there was no Disney monstrosity there. It was all country. Miami was a trip but nothing like it is now.

01:12 for you kids, that object in the middle of the video is an "antenna" and cars used to have them. If you had a fancy car, it might raise or lower by power. For most of us, we had to pull it up into position by hand. This allowed you to receive radio transmissions in the car like music or news. Has anyone seen my teeth?

    • @SeriousDragonify

My father used to have car with antenna. Always knew it was used for the radio. Later on they did do on roof and majority disbanded it because it was dangerous for using during raining. Because it would be hit by thunder.
