Should the U.S. Decouple from China? | U.S.-China Counterpoints
In 2022, the trade volume between the United States and China topped $750 billion dollars. Despite the deep economic interconnection between the two largest economies, both countries have been taking steps to separate their supply chains from each other-a process known as decoupling. What is driving the U.S. discussion about decoupling from China, and is it possible to decouple from China completely?
In an interview filmed on March 8, 2024, Clark Packard discusses how decoupling would affect the American and global economy.

Bullying, expansioned, economic threat to small countries like Philippines. China knew Philippines as one of the weak military power in the region took advantages. Xi offered to demilitarize the South China Sea if the US does it, it was rejected. Xi also offered for the US to do BRI together, it was killed by your state department (probably before it reached Obama)--listen to John Thornton's speech at Texas University, he was told this personally by Kerry (Kerry thought it's a bad idea that US didn't join BRI). It seems that those two namesakes didn't write the book...Mr. Olins you might as well interview the ghost writer.

Google left China in 2009, in that year there was terrorism attacks in China and Google was mixed up with those extraterritorial terrorists, and decided to leave b/c it wanted to take care of those terrorists and refuse to comply with CN law. That was before announcement of "pivoting to Asia" in 2011. All of you know so little about China, even basic facts were wrong. Steve Orlins is actually relatively more knowledgeable and slightly more objective. The Ambassador was strange, you announced pivoting to Asia, then you sent your officials visiting Asian countries to work them against China, you formed all those mini-coalitions targeting and militarily circling China, but you expect China to know that you didn't actually pivot to Asia? China was shocked to the core in 1991, but it was dirt poor and weak, didn't have any money and the country was corrupted and infiltrated. Yin He Hao event occurred in 1993, when US military demanded a search in high sea, when Yin He Hao refused, the US turned off it GPS, so it drifted aimlessly in the ocean for 33 days, and had to succumb to the humiliation in the end. The US military didn't find anything, they never said sorry. This is one of the greatest humiliation Chinese consider to have been subjected to by the US, which kicked started the development of Bei Dou in 1994, and it took China 20 plus years to finish the entire system, and now it's better than GPS. Then the humiliation of 1996 Taiwan Strait missile crisis: Li Denghui visiting the US, US lied and bullied the PRC, and there was nothing the PRC could do. Then the bombing of the CN embassy in Belgrade in 1999, US lied through its teeth. US surveillance flights: how many times a day near China? CN only doesn't want to be bullied, every step of the way, you bullied (not to mention the attempts of color revolutions, sponsored terrorists). Olins asked a valid question: US is responsible for it, CN was trying desperately to survive and not to be bullied. So when the US announced that it would militarily target and contain China in 2011, of course it caught China's attention.

As an American expat who has lived in Asia for the past 30 years, I have a good understanding of how the US and China view each other, and found this interview to be a telling illustration of why current US foreign policies toward China are so flawed. As Professor Jeffrey Sachs (among others) advocates, I think the fundamental issue we should ask ourselves is why the US finds it difficult to accept that China, as the world's largest major trading power and second largest economy, wants to have a stronger say in world affairs and a military that can protect its economic interests such as shipping routes as what many other global trading powers have done in the past 200 years, including Great Britain and the US. because once we take the position that the US must be able to continue to dominate China geopolitically, economically and militarily -- something i am not sure is realistic or even fair -- then that's how we get ourselves into this cycle of contentious dynamics and mutually destructive behavior (e.g., the US using Taiwan as a leverage against China and sending a carrier to sail through the Taiwan Straits even though it had already committed to the notion that Taiwan was part of China as a basis of the normalization in 1979, prompting China to build up its anti-carrier defense in the Taiwan Straits, etc.). Before we escalate the China bashing, we need to take a step back and ask ourselves whether we are leading the world toward a dangerous place because of our own double standards (unfortunately something that a number of current events elsewhere are exposing us of...)

The US and its allies do not recognize the legitimacy of the Chinese government and will use all possible means to change it. China is reacting to each U.S. action. It is considered impolite to not reciprocate. Following the September 11, 2001 attack, the U.S. shifted attention from China to the Middle East, easing China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 2001. As China emerged as the "world's factory," producing inexpensive goods that lowered global inflation, central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, maintained low-interest rates, fostering excessive leveraging in the U.S. and Europe. This, coupled with risky financial practices and the housing market's collapse, led to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Despite feeling unsettled by China's economic growth, the United States actively pursued financial support from China, for China to continue purchasing U.S. Treasury bills. In 2011, Obama proposed the "Pivot to Asia" strategy, which shifted the focus of US foreign policy from the Middle East to Asia. This, along with the wargaming of a sea blockade of Chinese commercial ships on a global scale, the formation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which deliberately excluded China, the establishment of a 2500-strong US marine air-ground task force in Darwin, and an increase in the rotation of both US Air Force planes and US Navy vessels through Australian bases, alarmed the Chinese leadership. Unable to remain passive, hide their strength, and bide their time, Xi Jinping was selected as the leader of China in 2013 to make China more secure. These included the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Belt and Road initiative, and the building of artificial islands in the South China Sea. In 2015 the "Made in China 2025" initiative was announced. These policies directly responded to the perceived threat posed by the "Pivot to Asia" strategy. No country is excluded from joining the AIIB or the Belt and Road Initiative. Obama's intentions were clarified when he responded to Xi Jinping's proposal on September 25, 2015, to make the South China Sea (SCS) a non-militarized zone by initiating freedom of navigation operations in the SCS on October 27, 2015. Politics determines how wealth is distributed within a country, while wars and diplomacy determine how wealth is distributed between countries. These are not good outcomes for US citizens of US Government policies: Economic inequality, inflation, stagnant real wages for the last fifty years, costly healthcare, an expensive education system, student loan debt totaling $1.7 trillion with an average balance of $38,000, poor public transportation systems, racial inequality, mass incarceration, the militarization of police, deteriorating infrastructure, housing affordability, homelessness, the opioid epidemic, and gun violence. Instead of prioritizing the welfare of its people, the US meddles in other countries to spread its version of democracy. The question is whether the USA can continue to survive with its version of democracy, not whether it can have any leadership role in the global order. The 'Arsenal of Democracy' produces 40 percent of the world's weapons. It is a very profitable business model in which other countries buy these weapons to fight each other. The key is maximizing profits without shedding US blood by inducing conflicts between and within countries outside the USA. One client is eager to spend AUD 368 billion to buy a few high-quality used nuclear-powered submarines. This business model's critical components are NATO, QUAD, ANZUS, Five Eyes, AUKUS, and MCC (Mutual Cross-Service Agreement). Japan and the Philippines are cornerstones of the strategy to keep Asia poor and divided. This policy is articulated in the top-secret U.S. Foreign Policy written 76 years ago. February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy: Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time. Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975. The 1989 attempt in China failed. The 2019-2020 attempt in Hong Kong also failed. The US makes the rules, and the US and their friends do not have to follow them. Since WWII, the United States has started 201 wars, overthrew 36 foreign leaders, killed or attempted to kill 50, dropped bombs in 30 countries, and interfered in 86 foreign elections. To make the world safe for democracy, the US has caused the deaths of tens of millions of people in its conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. The CIA was involved in covert operations that resulted in mass killings of communists in over 22 countries, 500,000 to 2,000,000 Indonesian civilians disappeared in 1965-1966. Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.

The difference between the European Union and Europe is significant! The EU will always be the EU of the United States. The EU follows the orders of the United States and has long wanted to start a new Cold War with China! But in fact, there are many countries in Europe that they are not willing to do because it concerns the lives of Europeans! The European Union is the pawn of the United States, but I don't think Europeans want to be the pawn of the United States!

she speak as a stateman should. but the reality is US leadership do not act as stateman, they act as politician because the nation is too polarised. if you can turn something as basic as abortion into political divide, what can you not turn into one? politician piroritise how policies will affect their reelection than what is benefiting to the state. that is why they make the decision they make. until american thinker can say boldy that it is the political system that is in trouble. US cannot resolve even domestic concern, much less attempt to deal with international concerns. I hope more attention is place on returning US politic to moderation. with a toxic political culture that tries to define their own side as "real america" and "american value", which politician would dare to speak truth that would not toe the line of either side? the inability for US to handle Israel proves how dysfunctional US leadership is at being decisive and the world watches on. this is not good for US image in the world.
