Oh I have a question! I've always found the science around medicine and the body super interesting, but I could never actually work in the field since everything grosses me out. So I've ended up doing medical adjacent background paperwork stuff (I'm not the business bro though lol). But is there anything about the eye that grosses you out about the eye? Like a surgery or condition that gives you the ick?

Eyeball comedy. When I explain my NAION I tell people it starts with having a small disc in the back of the eye. I always enunciate carefully when I say this. "It's a small DISC. Dissssc. I have a small disc." That usually gets 'em laughing while I explain the rest of the condition.

OHMYGOSH!!! You are talking about corneal transplant surgery! My ophthalmologist is going to do a partial thickness corneal transplant on the INSIDE of my right eye, AND YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IT!!! So excited!!!!!! She's already done a PTK to the outside of that eye. The left eye needs similar work. I'm a veteran, and my eyes were damaged when I was in the Navy. This is so-oo-oo-o exciting!!!

You asked for an eye doctor story. Well here goes. I have only had my eyes dilated once in my life, despite having many eye appointments. When I was in the 4th grade, I had one appointment where they did the drops. After the appointment, they told my mother I needed glasses and that, after I got used to them, they would help with headaches. We got the glasses and for a couple months I tried to get used to them. Unfortunately, they kept giving me headaches instead of preventing them. I'd have to remove them no matter how long I waited tried to get used to them. We went back to the doctor and discovered there had been a rather frustrating mistake. Turns out my vision was perfectly normal, they had somehow messed up the measurements due to the eyedrops, and I sailed on my merry way with no glasses at all. Later as a teenager, I was diagnosed with migraines which accounted for the headaches and last time I got my eyes check, I was only off by 1/2 a point, probably because I'm in my mid thirties and coming up to that reading glasses stage.

Quick question, this has nothing to do with eyes, so you have really nice curly hair, and you've mentioned your past cancer and having treatment, is your curly hair a by product of chemo, called chemo curls? or have you always had curly hair? This was cool! I've had strabismus surgery, and something I thought was neat is that they can do adjustable sutures so that they can fine-tune it afterwards. I didn't need them, which I'm kind of relieved about because it sounds like an unnerving experience, but it's also pretty cool that they can do that. Having the double vision go away (or at least go way down) really does make a huge difference! I really appreciate the pediatric opthalmology department (They're the ones who see adult strabismus patients too, at least where I'm at) And also - shout out to Orthoptics people, I didn't know they existed until I was dealing with the strabismus stuff, but they all seemed very friendly and helpful and all the tools they use are pretty cool looking, even if they do make my eyes sore 😅

Ahh, Monday.... can't trust that day. 😂 But yeah, part of it is wanting to enjoy the weekend, but part of it is also that so many of us are flat broke with no insurance (THAT familiar song and dance) and the regular doctor's office isn't open on the weekend and while the ER would be open, it would also be crowded with "actual" emergencies like stab wounds or something and the thought process is very Rural Medicine of "welp, I'm not bleeding out and my eye is still in my head, I'll just get some eye drops and wait for the weekday morning to call for an appointment". (Apply as needed to every medical problem less severe than a fully broken arm or leg bone or a sucking chest wound, because $2k just to be seen by the ER isn't doable for most people.)

I was 27 and was having my tonsils removed. As this was my first surgery I was of course not wanting to bare my all to the staff. I had 4 nurses hovering over me and I said "I came in wearing this gown and I expect to be still wearing it when I wake up." Once I started waking up in recovery I was wrapped up like a cocoon. I started feeling around for the gown to make sure I was still wearing it - It wasn't there. They finally come to unwrap me out of the 8 sheets I was wrapped in and when they got to the fifth sheet there was my gown. I learned that day you don't ever say anything like that to the nurses because they will go out of their way just to mess with you. They had their fun at my expense and I tell it to the doc before the operation. They all get a kick out of it and have a good laugh over it. It's a good ice breaker before surgery
