    The fact is if the SFL's said 'made in Germany' somewhere on them it would be a surer buy. But with these 2nd tier Zeiss's being put together in Japan it keeps people on the fence about it. Including me.

      Jump off the fence. I have a pair of 8X40 SFLs for the last couple of months, and am very satisfied with them. Probably one of the best attributes are the size and weight. Much more pocketable than my Noctivids. Sometimes it's okay to drive a Honda instead of a Porsche.

    Why did you exclude the Leica Noctovid from your review?

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding Před 3 dny

      Thanks for asking; we know somebody would! The Noctivid is unquestionably one of the best binoculars we carry. It has an absolutely gorgeous view, but the ergonomics simply fall short for us and the majority of our customers. They are heavier and lack the ergonomic grip and smooth focus wheel that the SF and NL have, and when you're spending $3K+ it makes sense to have the best ergonomics AND the best image quality. We have all three in our store, and these two drastically outsell the Noctivid because of the ergonomics. That said, as we've tried to emphasize in all of our videos, binoculars are extremely personal, and there are plenty of folks who choose the Noctivid. We release these videos based on what our audience wants to see most, and these two binoculars are simply more popular and got their own video. We may do another one with the Noctivid someday!

    Is there a difference between using the BTX + 1.7 doubler, comparing with the ATX - both at 60 x power? I mean: is the image a littlebit darker because of the 1.7 doubler or is there no difference at all?

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding Před 7 dny

      Great question! Technically yes, the 1.7x extender decreases the overall light transmission by introducing extra lenses, but it isn't drastic. It gets tough to compare the brightness because you're looking through the ATX with one eye and the BTX with two eyes. The ATX is brighter, but having both eyes open can make your brain think the BTX appears brighter. Hope this helps!

    I had a question on hand-holding the 14x52. I could easily handhold the 12x42 NLs, steadily, when paired with the optional Forehead rest. Just wondering if the 14x52 is similar enough from a steadiness standpoint, when paired with the optional forehead rest. Thank you.

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding Před 7 dny

      If you were able to handhold the 12x42 easily enough with the forehead rest, you should have a similar experience with the 14x52 and the forehead rest. Increasing the magnification makes vibration more pronounced, but the increased weight will offset that to some extent. Counterintuitively, heavier binoculars can provide a more stable view. And since the NLs are so ergonomic, they are very comfortable to hold steadily.

    I own both. The Victory SF is a masterpiece of ergonomics that are let down by their eyecup design. The eyecups feel cheap and it’s a crime to an otherwise amazing product. At this price point, you’re splitting hairs to be clear, but if you’re glassing all day, the NL Pure is on another level optically in my opinion. The field of view is absurd. One thing that really bothered me was that the forehead rest isn’t included with the NL. for $3500 this just felt insulting for them to ask for another $200 for what’s arguably the product’s signature feature.

  • @rickicoughlan8299
    @rickicoughlan8299 Před 10 dny

    Thanks for your overview of these bins. I've compared these in the 10x42 range in a store and the adjacent park. While both were excellent, I feel the colour rendition was superior in the NL Pures and I couldn't create any light artefacts in them - fringing etc. - no matter how hard I tried. As a pro birder, this is really important to me as I work in so many light conditions and must be able to identify and observe the birds with plenty of accuracy. However the long hours of handling bins in the field is also important. On picking up the NL Pures I felt like they were made for me and was instantly in love. The ergonomics are fantastic. I always prefocus - i.e. I keep my bins focused at a distance where I'm seeing most birds in a given habitat which keeps me ready when a bird appears. If I see a bird fly into a distant tree, I quickly focus on the surrounding foliage, spot it with my naked eyes and then get the bins on the bird and it's focused, so rapidity of focus with the wheel is not so important. These are basic binocular skills for birders. When it comes down to choosing bins we have to take into account the total experience and for me the NL Pures had the edge.

    • @Optics4birding
      @Optics4birding Před 6 dny

      Thank you so much for your input! It is so nice to get feedback from someone who is using binoculars in the field for hours at a time and in low light conditions; this is where the top end optics make the biggest difference. What kind of habitat are you working in? We agree that the speed of the focus wheel is not super important at longer distances, but many of our customers that work in close quarters (e.g. jungles in Ecuador, forests in the Eastern US, etc.) depend on a fast focus wheel to acquire birds at various distances within ~20 yds. Not to say that the NL Pure doesn't work well for this, but the Victory SF is slightly faster and some of our customers choose it for that reason. Thank you for sharing your valuable experience with us!

    • @rickicoughlan8299
      @rickicoughlan8299 Před 5 dny

      @@Optics4birding thank you. I’ve use these in a mixture of habitat types here in Australia, tall wet forests, open woodlands, heath and rainforests. I don’t find the focus a problem because I always prefocus as described in my comment above. If I do this I never miss the bird.

    • @redacted2618
      @redacted2618 Před 13 dny

      Image stabilization isn’t everything. Glass quality matters a lot, especially if you are really stretching the distance out. A steadier image doesn’t matter if it’s a cloudy one, and I always have a tripod if I need to have a shake-free view. Are image stabilized binoculars bad? No, and they definitely have advantages. However, if you’re looking at Swarovski, and especially if you’re looking at higher powered ones like the new 14x52, you’re probably in the market for the best glass you can get your hands on. If Swarovski (or any of the adjacent top brands) comes out with them, then I’ll consider looking at a set. However, if it’s anything like rangefinding binoculars, you lose some optical quality with the addition of the on board electronics required to function.

    This is a great review! As a professional bird watcher and occasional researcher, I've used Leica Trinovids for decades. Recently I compared the Leica Noctovid, the Swaro SE and Swaro NL Pure, all 10x42. I found the difference between the Trinovid and Noctovid to be so small I have to wonder at the price. Optically they're almost the same! The Swaro SE is considerably better, but the NL Pure is totally next level in every respect, egonomics (grip, balance, ease of focus, eyecup fit), light transmission, field of view, colour, sharpness/resolution in the centre of view right out to the edges are all vastly superior. They are superb in all lighting conditions, reducing silhouette effects and stretching out the times of day one can work in the field. You have to work very hard to create even a minimal fringe effect. If you demand the best performance, you will pay the "best" price but also the quality is remembered with so many amazing nature experiences long after the price is forgotten.

    Hi. Can I ask for a guide of optimum focus/dia for day bird observation? Now I'm using 7x40 but old military with radicals.

      Hello, thanks for asking! The SFL 8x40 and 10x40 are both excellent for daytime bird observation. Feel free to call us at 877-674-2473 if you'd like to have an in-depth discussion about it!

    Very informative, thanks. I’ve seen a few videos or reviews out there that talk about the features of these, but I haven’t seen any yet of actual field use and results. Any comments on how often the bird ID is incorrect? What’s the quality of the photos taken in the field? Are the sharing functions that can sync the view to other phones and allow you to pass the binocs to someone else seamless or glitchy?

      Thank you for asking! We are planning to release another video with more images and videos taken with the AX Visio to give you a look at the camera's capabilities. As with the Merlin Bird ID app, the AX Visio does exceptionally well at IDing the bird when you are close enough to the bird and get a reasonably clear photo. We find it especially helpful that the AX Visio displays a confidence reading that tells you how much you should rely on the ID it gives. Although it takes a some time to establish the connection to other smartphones, the live view works very well. The Share Discoveries mode (where you mark a location and hand off the AX Visio to a friend) works flawlessly as long as you and your friend within a few feet of each other. Hopefully this answers your questions and stay tuned for more!

    Thank you for the updates and explanation. I was thinking to wait for the 2nd edition before actually making the leap. But now I am decided!

    Even though I'm afraid of these things snatching up my dog cause she's small, I think they're SUPER cute. There's a family of them living in the tree next to my house and the little bob/dance they do is so cute!
