Puffing Billy - Train of lights plus Night Train Double header
We encountered the "training" Night train at Emerald Station whilst getting Dinner. It was unexpected and I only managed to get o few photos of it at the station as it left for Lakeside.
It was great to see them come back double up. I will go out and get more next weekend. Short and sweet. (Some video was shot by my daughter) Thanks for watching.

A day spent at Kilmore and the Quarry. waiting for the QUBE to fill and leave. It has been a while since I was there. I like to sit and watch the Loco idle so I included a bit of that. Its more ASMR stuff etc. Thanks for watching. Not my best work. I am struggling with a new Fluid head on my tripod. Its utter garbage. As you can see.

There’s something broken in you……beyond repair……..
I know
As much as I love the other trains, the title said the "Garrat returns" so I was expecting to see more of it.
@@martynpegg1483 sometimes i only have time to jump out and grab a photo. Im not very good at video. Still learning setups and stuff. I may do a compilation of the Garratt’s. That would be fun i suppose.
@@dons_trains Ok Don thanks for replying & all the best Thanks
Looking at this, the Welsh Highlands, and the Strasburg (in the US), it never ceases to amaze me. These lines have heavier rails, and longer trains in preservation than they ever did before preservation. That really makes me happy, knowing that they are thriving like this.

Looks like shunting practice. NRT = Not a Real Train 😂
That’s because it’s exactly what they are doing, training.
@@hippyo1 I'm pretty sure that's what I said, but thanks for your input
@@trainsimulatordriver No worries glad I could help 😊
So 129 no longer runs the noon train every Saturday?
I'm not sure what the schedule is. I just rock up and photograph whatever happens hahaha
Brasso useful for cleaning Brass & Copper fittings! I thought the Copper & Brass fittings require some cleaning. 😅
I did it again. I will change it. Why does it bother you? Just asking.
Because it's two wrong. You need to go over their and stand in the corner to.

@@dons_trainsDyslexia IS No laughing Matter but a curable deficit.
because it does...
Garratt, not Garrett. A Garrett is a turbo charger.
And a Garant is a gun
It is also a Traction Engine....
spell checking also changes it from an a to an e.
@@dons_trains That's true it does that.
Very enjoyable video. It’s amazing how track imperfections are magnified by long zoomed lenses, as could be seen at the start of the video, but it is not just on the Puffing Billy line, as the same thing can be seen on railway videos from all around the world.
Why is there a sole open carriage, with dining car with a guards seperating it from the rest?
Not sure. Maybe someone else can answer that?
G'day Don, Just wondering how you listened to the radio? is it a Rail channel or private quarry channel? cheers mate nick.
I have gme xrs660 handheld uhf. It scans some programable receive only channels you can put in with the app
@@dons_trains Are they using Victorian shunt channel Sidings 2? cheers
@@nicknick8295 I will check next time i am there. I am scanning all the frequencies the app has available
@@dons_trains Thankyou!
Awesome . . .
Thanks mate
Looking good. Like to see a bit of rain though.
Looking forward to wet and foggy days too.
Amazed no one saying keep arms and legs inside the carriage! 1:00
Needs more headlight!
the reason was only two NA's were available for the weekend.6, 7, and 8 are in the workshop and the two DH diesels were also not available
Is the only reason years because the valley got two steam trains and one diesel train only all the rest are under maintenance or broken down
Im not sure.
6 awaiting axles and wheels, 7 D exam, 8 D exam, 12 in service, 14 in service, D21 dead, dh5 dead, dh59 needs a minor repair, G42 stored dry awaiting D exam, ngg16/129 B exam. Mostly it's routine maintenance. Ngg16/129 will be out quickest in time for Train Of Lights. If we're lucky 7 might be out in time for Thomas.
Could you please spell Garratt correctly Only 10 carriages a easy load for a hydraulic
done
That' thats not puffing billy, that just a diesel train.
Not sure... If you look real close, you can see the puffs...
Garrat
yeah I am dyslexic like sometimes
It has not replaced the Garrett - nothing can! It's instead of.
Its so comically oversized for the rails! I cant believe its able to take the corners that quickly withough tipping over!
4 of the DH class still operate on the sugar cane train network, which is a narrower network gauge.
Does not seem right, it is called 'Puffing Billy', not 'Diesel Billy', although this could be a solution to total fire ban days.
When the alternative is closing then railway and not making revenue, this is a good solution indeed
@@DandamanV we love the Diesels🙂. Don see them out often so its a treat for someone who is there nearly every weekend.
Saw these parked up at the depot in Belgrave earlier this year . Rode on puffing billy same day loco on the day being the Garrett . Great experience highly recomended
First time I've seen DH59. Great video.
The DH was from QR being gauge changed to 2’6”
Queensland sugar cane gauge!
bummer to have a diesel substitute for the Garrett, I know it needed work done on it.
I actually really like the diesels. Especially with a fresh coat of paint
I would imagine it would also be good on total fire ban days in summer?
I have never seen the DH 59 before, is it special narrow gauge train? More information please. PBR does not have a list of engines to refer too.
The DH class locos were QR switching locos There were around 80 built by walkers limited in Maryborough Queensland. They have all been sold off or donated to tourist railway's. They were originally 3ft 6 gauge or narrow gauge loco powered by a caterpillar diesel engine. I believe most were sold off to sugar cane mills and they were converted to 2ft gauge. There are still plenty of original examples to see.
@@scottcannell5584 Thank you for the explanation and history. Well done.
I remember the gr8 trip I had to Gembrook yrs ago, will have 2 return again very soon
What happened to the Garrett locomotive?
see comment below🙂
@@dons_trains got it needed some repair work
It's in the workshops for a B exam. Preventative maintenance basically.
@@trainsimulatordriver I gotcha it’s always nice to have a engine on standby in case the steam engine is unable to operate
NGG16/129 is in the workshops for a B exam. Should be out soon.
Can’t wait.
Is this DH from Queensland/former QR loco?
@@interceptor7905 good question
@@interceptor7905 yep it's a Queensland Walker regauged from 3'6" to 2'6"
No boom gates were harmed in the making of this video.

I wonder how many you could fit in it if it was empty. Hahaha
The velocities have the most anemic pathetic horns ever!!!!
Yeah it makes me laugh every time.
QUBE not CUBE
Im not changing it. Sorry not sorry
Garratt is the correct spelling here. Garrett is the other but that is a brand of turbo charger for cars and trucks etc. Great video though.
Good
Thanks
Wow Folks, Nice rebuild of the Garret.
Ground up including regauging and so many changes to suit the needs of PBR
Just found your page, please tell us a little more about the locations etc. We know very little about railways in Australia. Mike "Rails in Wales" with 4.4m views...have a look.
Thanks for your comment. I am not very up to date with the railways in Victoria. Not enough to provide commentary or fill my description with valuable info. Apologies for being lazy.
The double line with the VLocity and Sprinter railcars (V/Line) is broad gauge - 1600 mm. This line once went as single track railways to Albury in NSW with the secondary line to Shepparton in Victoria and Tocumwal in NSW, but since about 2011 the broad gauge line parallel to the standard gauge line from Seymour to Wodonga (Albury-Wodonga is called the 'Twin City') has been standardised. Google is your friend to look up these locations. The tracks to the left are the Sydney to Melbourne main line - standard gauge in Victoria since 1962 - 1435mm, the same as England. There is also originally a broad gauge branch from Benalla to Yarrawonga (Vic) and Oaklands (NSW that was also standardised. When it had passenger services, it was a single 'unit' as you would call it, typically a DERM (diesel electric rail motor) dating from the late 1920s. A lovely rail motor! The line off the Tocumwal one from Toolamba to Echuca was reopened in 2013 but has again been unused since about 2018 IIRC. Hope all this helps.
@@edmundcarew7235 wow. Thanks.
I wondered when the sydney train would go through. Shame it was such a fleeting view. Nice day for your filming.
