A higher octane allows the aircraft designer to get the same performance from a smaller engine. Example: the Spitfire and the Bf-109 both had roughly the same power, but while the Spitfire had a 27 liter Merlin, the '109 had a 36 liter Daimler-Benz. The larger displacement engine consumed more fuel and this contributes to the Messerschmitt's short loiter time during the Battle of Britain. Very informative video about a very overlooked topic.

What's even more interesting or fascinating is that the Ascent Propulsion System was the ONLY engine that wasn't test-fired before launch, the DPS (Descent Propulsion System) , as well as the SPS and all the reaction control thrusters were test-fired before their respective modules were mounted and stacked on top of the Saturn 5. I think it had something to do with the lining on the inside of the engine bell of the APS, which deteriorated to such a state that it was infeasible to test-fire it, as it would have to be completely refurbished/rebuilt before being installed in the LM. So the first time it was used, was on the surface of the moon when they blasted off to rejoin the CSM in lunar orbit, and it worked every time! True ingenuity indeed!

What a cool machine! So many potential benefits. I can see how this method of spinning the rotors might lower the learning curve for pilots. A shame the market for the system wasn't large enough.
