Great build. I love the final product.
Thanks!
I love this. Seeing someone who is obviously very talented sharing a complicated project in such a way anyone can understand. Theres so much going on here between the woodwork, the electronics and the software plus the challenges requiring lots of critical thinking to get each component to work together and be functional. Nice work!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words and I’m glad you liked it.
This looks awesome, excited to see the full build video. Do you have more details on the ball and socket joints and how they're used to keep the top level?
More details to come in the full video! The ball and socket joints are a big part of what made this project work
@@FirthFabrications I'm subscribed and waiting :) -- Really interested to see if this can be adapted for what I was looking to do which is create some adjustable height surfaces with a bit more flexibility in how it's done and parts used
Please link the code in the next video!
I plan to have a GitHub page with all the code and design files. May or may not be ready by the time the video drops 😬
That is incredibly cool, how did you pull that off? I guess some sort of 3d positioning sensor and hydrolics/whatever the air powered version of hydrolics is called? Is there a way to make it more accurate(does it even need to be)? And last but not least what is the weight limit considering the four individual pistons?
You can get the details when I post a full build video in a week or so. But in short, it uses a gyroscopic sensor and a microcontroller to position 4 linear actuators. With even distribution of weight, the actuators *should* support 1200lbs. But the OSB would end up failing way before then.
No it can't lol
I never claimed it could "lol". Only that it could level itself.
No, neither can this bench. NEXT!!! 🤣💂♂️🇬🇧🏴
How would you improve it?
@@FirthFabricationsI'd do it by making it a self leveling table
@@CDXRK Is a bench a table? Or is a table a bench? What makes a bench a bench or a table a table?
That’s not level
It’s pretty darn level
Let me level it myself. Where's my sledgehammer?
I appreciate your confidence in my build quality that you’d require a sledgehammer to dismantle my bench!
The bubble is not being your friend
What do you mean, we’ve known each other for decades?
Why would it need to?
Good question. I came up with this idea because I wanted my workbench to be on castors, but I have a very unlevel garage floor. Generally the best way to ensure what your building will be level is to start with a level surface.

Holy shit im tired of hearing this mid song
You know what? So am I…
Great video! Some coding info would be nice to have! but Awesome project, Kudos!
Thanks. I'm glad you liked the video!
I'm with others on this, how does this only have now 660 views? CZcams needs to get with it. I suffer from the "not enough" thing with my son too. I think showing/sharing creativity is a wayyy better gift.
Appreciate it. Even though it doesn’t have a lot of views, I’m very proud of this build!
WHY??.. TOXIC
What do you mean? Mineral oil isn’t toxic?
What an awesome build. I love the look on his face when the school bus starts tilting. What a great idea to have the big(ish) bus mimic the little bus.
Appreciate it! What you don't see is him bursting into tears right after that moment. He was really scared of the bus moving. He's now gotten over his fear.
This is awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
These are a lovely gift idea, well made mate and good recovery I felt your pain.
They’re still a big hit even a few years later!
@FirthFabrications I'm making something similar next week so trolling round looking for ideas so thanks for sharing your work mate.
@karlpopewoodcraft awesome! I’d love to see it when you finish
Jist glue it back on and add some long screws to make it safe
That’s about what I did! Good thinking 👍
Hey, great video. Do you think this could be made out of MDF? I'm looking to make a bed frame and MDF is about 5x cheaper than plywood where I live. Thanks.
Yes, I think MDF would be fine! Probably easier to paint too.
Gran idea y mejor ejecucion. Quedo excelente , podrias poner las nedidas de los componentes. Vendrian bien para todos los que seguimos tu canal. Saludod desde la ciudad de México.
Gracias!
This was the cutest thing ever
I’m glad you think so!
How does this have only 300 views? God damn man I'm keeping up with your future!
Glad you liked it!
Sir you're a hero! Would love to see the schematic for this!
I’m still pulling some of that stuff together but I plan on making a blog post with more technical details and sharing the GitHub repo.
@@FirthFabrications that would be fantastic! Thank you sir!

Can you tell me the name of that handled yellow pusher used with your table saw
That’s the Microjig Grr-Ripper !
You should add a remote instead of the button so you can pretend to launch the rocket and maybe a little speaker as well to make it feel more real. For the "Fire" you should add cotton so the light shines through and it looks like the smoke and fire also add oranage to the leds. :)
Boy do I wish I would have had you as a consultant when I was designing the rocket ship! Those are all great ideas. Maybe for kid #2.....
what happens when you accidently kick the support out with your leg? i like the full length cleat assembly details
The table top can support itself (via the French cleat) without either of the leg supports. Those are just for additional support. Unless there was a lot of weight on the table top and you kicked out both legs everything would be fine. This was mostly used as a temporary work surface so I never really had anything heavy on it. Good concern though.
@@FirthFabrications ok thx, yeah ive been considering a removable support leg on a folding table i have
Where can I buy the blue prints ?
Etsy! The link is in the video description!
Beautiful boards. Love the contrast between the ph and that wood. Which is my next question, what other wood is that?
That I believe is wormy maple!
This is an amazing idea for small space, can it be folded down instead of up?
That will depend on the way you attach the hinge. Mine can’t, but theoretically yes, you could put the hinge on the opposite side so you can fold down instead of up.
can already feel the shin pain
Ha! I actually built a little seat to go across all the planks to avoid this very issue!
@@FirthFabrications great solution! I made a platform bed, not nearly as nice as yours, but damn I ruined my shins on that one. A seat would have been a great solution to my clumsyness! Thanks for the vids! Have a great day!
Two questions - why did you opt for a glued ledge instead of a hinged one? And why did you mount the fingers in the middle of the ledge instead of in the front? I'm thinking that the placement of the fingers determines the max thickness of the book, and it would be easier to angle the fingers away from you to hold a thinner book, than it would directing them towards you to accommodate a thicker one. Do the fingers fill any purpose when pointing towards you? Otherwise the fingers are never useful for any book that requires more than half of the ledge. What's your view on that? Thanks for another great build!
Howdy, I didn't even consider a hinged ledge but that is actually a great idea. Would have made storage even easier. I think I just went with the static hinge because that is how the old cookbook holder I was referencing was made. Great idea! You're right about the fingers too. However, I've found in practice that most cookbooks are not so thick that they don't fit so its not a huge deal. great questions, I appreciate the thorough design review!
How much load can the supports take, given that they're suspended by hinges? I'm seriously considering this build, but with an adaptation to a moist cellar wall, so I'll have to use something else than wood for the french cleats and whatever else that touches the walls.
I did not test the bench to failure...but I can say it safely held my body weight when I sat on it. Its really mostly dependent on the supports below it and how much weight the cleats can hold.
Beautiful friend
Thank you!

This is wrong on many ways
What’s wrong about it?
@@FirthFabricationspersonally I've never seen anyone use that volume of oil, but to each their own! I'm sure you've got you're reasons.
@@kennanblake1562 I was filling a mineral oil bath for the first time and decided to pour it over a cutting board instead of just straight into the bucket!
Wow
I hope this is an "I like it!" type of "Wow" ?
Hi from reddit, do you still know the measures or have any plans from this proyect i would like to make one for my son very cool project btw
Hi. I'm sorry, but I don't. I wish I would have written them down as quite a few people have asked. All the shapes were just hand drawn directly on the wood and I didn't create any designs beforehand.
Thank you this looks great
No, thank you!
The funny part is not the separator falling. It's you throwing the vacuum tube down. So I recently got out the hospital and was in for a long time. my balance is just coming back along with hand strength. I constantly bump and drop stuff. I refuse to let it upset me so I just leave it until I need whatever it is! 🤣
I get much to frustrated. I need to take a page from your book!
I just did this. Looked like a good idea. Good for a quick fix. I think most people will start again and use plywood or 2x4''s. This creative method was too shaky!
Yes, mine is also a little wobbly at times. I bought some 4-way PVC joints and plan to add supports between the legs. Hopefully that will help. If so I will probably make an update video
@@FirthFabrications I just got some nice maple plywood and going to suck it up and make the box. I'm torn between making it fully enclosed for sound issues or just making it stable for the 6 gallon bucket. Working on it in SketchUp now. I have 2 - 2x4 sheets of the maple. Im toying around making a diagonal cut of some sort so I can use one sheet for both sides. then the other sheet of the back and top. As for sound, I made a plywood device that fits in my window and has a vac hose to vent from my vac. The window closes on top of it and I have some square strips for wind security. I live in a decent area so im not too worried. I made it so I can loosen a thumb screw and take the whole this out if I travel. The sound reduction is awesome AND anything that does not get filtered will just blow outside. Im talking all the 3 micron and less crap. Everyone should have a setup like that so the only chance the fine stuff gets to your lungs will just blow outside. glad I have a window to make this happen but I saw a dude drill through the wall. I'd do it in a heartbeat! FYI, I considered using some eye hooks and an x shape of bungees to firm it up. This is possibly a good idea for budget minded. I got back and forth depending on my bank account! LOL!
Thats amazing! How did u add the lights??
Glad you like it! I just bought a strip of red LEDs and stuck/hot glued them onto the bottom.
@@FirthFabricationssmart ;)
wat did you use? Linseed Oil?
It’s a cutting board oil from a company called Walrus Oil !
@@FirthFabrications Awesome thanks
How did you work out the rockers so they where stable
The rockers were just sketched by hand onto a 2x6 and cut out with a jig saw. I made sure the rockers went with the grain to get the most support. Then I just sanded them until they were symmetrical
Love the build, what timber did you use?
These were made completely out of an 8ft 2x12 board
I’ll binge watch your older videos later, but your voiceover is fine. Better than my videos haha
I appreciate the feedback!
