AGI Lecture - Reading China’s Future by Reading the Past: How China-West Relations are Being Shaped
AGI Lecture - Reading China’s Future by Reading the Past: How China-West Relations are Being Shaped Today by Historical Thinking
In this lecture, Rana Mitter from the Harvard Kennedy School joined Dee Poon from Tessellation Group, as well as Brian Wong from the Department of Philosophy, HKU, to discuss some of the key events from the recent and ancient past and how they continue to shape political thinking and policymaking in China and which should be better understood by its counterparts in the West and beyond.
Mitter delivered an insightful presentation exploring the four major factors that have shaped China's social thought and diplomatic approach. The economic legitimacy, which provides a rationale for China's emphasis on economic development, and it elucidates why both the government and the people exhibit robust support for advancements in science and technology; China's modern history, which explains its vision and unwavering pursuit of leadership in the Global South; The traditional thought of Confucianism, combined with Marxism-Leninism, offers insights into China's selection of social policies and its approach to tackling challenges, such as inequality and social mobility.
In the subsequent panel discussion, Heiwai Tang delved deeper into China's economic policies within the Global South and its strategic approach to collaborating with developing nations. In contrast, Wong offered a philosophical perspective on China's social development since the initiation of the Reform and Opening Up policy. Poon as a business professional, contributed an on-the-ground viewpoint, sharing her experiences navigating geopolitical tensions, deciphering various policies, and striving for sustainability while growing her enterprise.

China is going to have a renaissance. China needs a renaissance. China needs to bring the rich traditional culture up to date, making the traditional culture relevant to modern life. In the last century and half, China has been absorbing the culture of the West. That makes China culturally very rich. That also requires China to integrate the different elements into new whole. China needs to examine its history with a new viewpoint. China needs to develop or adapt many disciplines, like sociology and anthropology to tell its own story.

I'm an absolute fan of Eric Li's. But chairman Xi put it even more nicely, "modernisation is not westernization". The Westen Interpretation of this, à la Kevin Rudd, is Xi's Marxism and Leninism (he speaks good Chinese, but has no insights). In contrast, Eric's interpretation is that the West achieved modernization not through the modern western values, but through e.g. colonialism. And china needs to chart its own way. 👍

to that Hongkonger, Hongkong got its position today only because China used to be a closed country and need Hongkong as a port to connect the world, now China is open, the importance of Hongkong will be lower and lower, so there's nothing pround being a Hongkonger, without mainland China you're nothing. again to that Hongkonger, 1 country 2 system is about the ownership of basic resources of a country, in mainland China the ownership is in the state where in Hongkong the ownership is in the hands of private sectors, it's not about what you can say in Hongkong what you cannot say in mainland, btw, if what you say is true you can say it in mainland too, stop smearing mainland, mainland don't need to copy what you learned from the West, today's Western world is pure garbage in free speech, also the 1989 Tiananmen square incident had been painted as a typical anti China anti CCP material with lies, when you find yourself sharing the same view as the US govt, you know you've been brainwashed, it's the US who's behind almost every crisis on this planet, not China.

1.0 China Doesn't Care About the Stock Market Markets (benefits only a few). 2.0 China isn't 'following the script' of the West! "Abacus against calculator"? Stock and Real property markets are the judgement for economy state in the West. Xi's ambitions are "share prosperity and sufficient (affordable) houses and food for all".

I got a kick out of the comment that China doesn't need a Constitution like the one possessed by the US. Which means China doesn't need an underlying Rule of Law either, right? Just have arbitrary legal judgements based upon "dynamic" interpretations of legal contracts based upon shifting power struggles. Granted, the US is showing similar moves towards arbitrary selective enforcement of the law with administration in the White House. But ultimately, if human and legal rights are "bestowed/revoked" based upon whoever happens to be in power, and therefore, are not unalienable, exactly for who does modernization benefit? A higher quality of economic life is meaningless without personal liberties. It's just a fancier form of political serfdom.

The western views and narratives about China always presumed that China is run by a pack of Mickey Mouse, unable to think, did not know what they are doing, a fumbling group of inepts and making mistakes after mistakes and China is going to collapse. On the contrary, America or the west is led by brilliant leaders and thinkers and America is the most progressive and well managed state in the world, doing everything right and America is just doing fine. And America rightly deserved to be lecturing China, telling China what to do, dictating to China, threatening and sanctioning China, bullying China, isolating and containing China, and the Chinese leader did not know what to do, did not know how to response, lamely sitting there to be bullied and threatened by the Americans and the West. Look at the realities on the ground. Over the last 40 years, where were China and the USA then and now? If China is run by a bunch of no idea and foolish leaders, would China be what it is today, the second biggest economy in the world, in ppp terms the biggest economy in the world. What about America, still sitting on top of the world? Looking at the end results, which state, China or the USA, is run by a bunch of Mickey Mouse? China today is very well ahead of the Americans in many fields of science and technology. The only thing left for the Americans to brag about is war, manufacturing wars and making war a business. This is the only industry left for the Americans but would soon also be over. China is now able to manufacture all the advanced weapons that once only the Americans could do, and can do it cheaper and better. America is declining into a Mickey Mouse country led by Mickey Mouse/Mice and still living in cartoon land believing that it still can kick the world around like before. The Americans are still deluding themselves by trying to sanction and isolate other states when in fact they are isolating and sanctioning themselves and did not have clue what is going on.

To what extent you can separate the political, from the economc policy. Technologically, or perhaps mechanically, they are both turning on the back of the same wheel, driving the affaires of the State. Otherwise there will be no synchronization between them. Each one of them is pulling or pushing the other in the same time.. And if you stall the wheel at any point, the whole thing will be at stillstand. You cannot just produce or accumulate products and labor in the kitchen without knowing, who they are , and what they are?, what is the menu? Who is going to cook t? Who is going to eat them? For what occasion? For what purpose? And who is going to pay the bill? And what is the overall net benefit of the whole gathering, not only on the stomach, and perhaps on the spirit, but on all the other social, cultural, and values assets as a distinct attribute of a specific society or civilization.

The elephant in the room that's ignored is the US containment of China from the Obama years consistently pursued by Trump and Biden. The trade wars, technology sanctions and disengagement. Some Chinese leaders suspected that Covid was a biological war launched after the Trump administration directed US businesses to withdrawal from China. The anti-China media campaign openly funded by the US State Dept, think tanks and academia. Continuous colour revolutions in Georgia and Ukraine followed with wars. All these formented a climate that will inflict big changes in Chinese policies
