This is what's most important for effective nursing #breastfeeding #breastfeedingtips #breastfedbaby
Without full range of motion of the tongue, the mechanics of breastfeeding suffer and either the baby or mom (or both) will have to compensate for this.
Sometimes those compensations are able to overcome the issues and sustain good nursing.
Other times, the dysfunction is so severe that the well-being of the mother and baby are compromised.
A tongue tie is a “tethered” tongue-meaning the tongue is tied down to the floor of the mouth. This doesn’t necessarily prevent the tongue from sticking out or moving side-to-side, but it does prevent it from fully elevating.
Did you already know this about tongue tie? 👅

      That’s a complication when the epidural isn’t done correctly, not something that would be caused by an epidural done properly. Your experience isn’t uncommon sadly. Thanks for the great video! I have small question: > Every 20-30 sucks, tilt the bottle down but leave the nipple in baby's mouth > Wait until baby sucks again, then tilt bottle back up so baby is drinking When we tilt the bottle and baby starts suck again, don't they swallow the air in the moment until we tilt bottle back?

    • @HolisticLactation
      @HolisticLactation Před 6 měsíci

      They shouldn’t be swallowing air then. You tilt the bottle quickly, not slowly. And since the baby is already in an upright position they are less likely to swallow air, or they will often burp it out themselves. Burping after bottle feeding is a good idea also.

    • @HolisticLactation
      @HolisticLactation Před 8 měsíci

      You could use it if you aren’t breastfeeding, but there’s not really any point unless you’re just curious or it’s some sort of fetish. If someone is exclusively pumping, they can use this. It doesn’t replace pumping though, so keep that in mind. Some people will never get milk with it, others will get a lot without having to do much at all, and most people will be somewhere in the middle.

    I’m following these steps and its not working for me. I would hand express to stimulate a let down and attach the Haakaa the way you described in the video but no milk is being “suctioned” out. Am I using it wrong? My breast feels full when I attached the Haakaa to my breast. Its the breast my baby didn’t feed on from our feeding session. I just recently started my breastfeeding journey 3 days ago and recovering from a C-section. I was using the electric pump to keep my milk supply. My baby is 2 weeks old and is breastfeeding fine imo. My nipple is a little sore from using an electric pump which is why I want to try the Haakaa. Any help is much appreciated.

    • @HolisticLactation
      @HolisticLactation Před 8 měsíci

      This device may not work for you. If you are needing to pump, then it’s recommended to use a pump instead of a milk collection (which is what this is). It’s unlikely that a Haakaa would do much for someone this early on in lactation also. If your nipple is sore from pumping, it’s best to get properly fitted for flanges and optimize your pump settings so it is comfortable to use.

      Hello! You need to be working closely with an IBCLC. There are no “tips” since your situation is complex and requires a proper feeding plan, management of lactation, and continued support leading up to hospital discharge (and potentially afterward also). We work virtually with clients if you’d like to set up an appointment with us. Otherwise, make sure to work locally with a very skilled IBCLC.

    • @HolisticLactation

      You do the pauses throughout the feeding whenever baby takes breaks. When nursing, multiple letdowns occur so this is something the baby is used to already.

      @HolisticLactation Před 7 měsíci

      @AnnaPM Great question! Babies cannot swallow air by itself. In fact, no one can. You can try this little experiment on yourself to see: open your mouth and take a big gulp of air, then close your mouth and try to swallow the air. Air can only be swallowed along with something else like liquid or food.

    Wow, this is a game changer. When first using this, there is some discomfort. What’s worked for me, is getting my breast/nips used to breastfeeding by doing it 7-11 times per day, your body will adjust. Then move to pumping, which you’ll build up a tolerance for that. Then I moved to the Haakaa w/the normal suction. Then once I feel a little more comfortable, then I’ll move to her more powerful suction. It is slightly painful at first, but it gets better as it sits on it. Also, make sure the nipple is free from touching sides of the silicon that helps a lot. After a while your body adjusts, I think, as it drains the milk. This advice was a game changer. I only did the normal suction to capture my leakage. And then I pumped after breastfeeding and I’ve gotten double what I normally get after pumping.

But in the NICU when they said it would help her grow and catch up the best I started. Yes it messed with me mentally but if I can do it to help her, my discomfort is worth her health. Obviously not everyone will be able to do this or put aside their issues to come to terms with it, but I was able to. And I'm so glad I did. Thank you for sharing your experience! Sensory issues are real and can interfere with breastfeeding just like you described. That’s amazing you were able to breastfeed despite that-AND that it helped you too.

      @HolisticLactation it is! It still freaks me out a little but I'm getting there. I just hope we get to take our little Miss home soon. She came out at 1300 grams and she's almost 1800 grams now. And we're almost up to half tube feeds and half breast woohooo! Your channel has helped heaps!

    I feel bad for not knowing some of these things earlier..My baby is 5 weeks now, usually she takes 3-4 oz per feed. From past few days she is taking more than usual, 5-6 oz before bedtime. If I don’t give her more, she cries a lot. She does not take it in one go but within 2 hour, she would drink that quantity. I feel that she is overfed. How can I reverse this, she is exclusively taking breastmilk but from a bottle. I am also struggling to make her breastfeed.

      It sounds liked you’d benefit from an appointment with a lactation consultant to go over bottle feeding, amounts of milk, and nursing/latching. We can help! A 30 minute appointment would be a good place to start: holisticlactation.com/clinic

      It can for some people, but not for others. If it hurts, don’t use it.

    My baby is both formula and breastfed. I saw a lactation specialist and she stated that I could switch my baby to breastfeeding only because I have the milk supply. I don’t fully yet believe I do, since sometimes I pump for 20-25 and I get 1.5 ounces. When I saw the specialist, I had skipped 2 feedings with her so it looks like I had a lot more milk than usual, which I did tell her. The issue is, she gets cranky after drinking from me and I ended up giving her a bottle. Prior to the lactation specialist, I used to breastfed her and also gave her a 4 ounce bottle. She usually only drank 3 ounces. My question is, if their stomach may be stretch out, it is possible to correct it? She just turned 2 months.

      Yes you can gradually feed normal amounts and feed more frequently. However, 4oz is still a normal amount.
