Well at least they don't roll and when you use the cherry & cola, the red covering even comes included. ;) I think with a bit of work a design could probably be made that could securely store plenty of water. A more rubbery insert perhaps. The plastic would still be a bit less clear and prone to scratches vs glass, but it's not a permanent or very large colony solution anyway. I actually used to use the orange ones to capture queens. Back when the plastic was orange (not sure if those still exist, haven't bought tic tacs in ages xD). It gave them a nice shaded area to calm down in and an included lid that could easily be closed.
True the red container is a good option. If you look at the thingiverse link, some made better versions. I loved the project, but won't continue it. I'm not capturing Dutch queens. I have enough.
Nice nest! And yeah that's the issue with setups with connection systems like these, ants hiding in the connectors and casualties when adding or changing setups Love to see the communication between ants with a nest move, like the "all clear signal" and everything. Usually it takes a bit before they deem a nest suitable and save to move in, so all and all this was a very fast move. You can see they find the nest a bit scary at the beginning first, hiding in the tunnel haha. The tunnel is easier for them to maintain the humidity, thats why they will keep the larvae and eggs there

Not polygyn, secondairy polygyn, meaning they sometimes accept a daughter back in the nest after a flight trying to keep them as polygyn will pretty much almost always fail as the workers will select the best queen and kill the other one [much like pleo species]
