Sweet job!
Excellent and informative video (living in CA, I also appreciated the location examples!).
Yeah thought it would break. Glad to see you can ream on it
When are your radios going to support noaa and IP67 or higher water resistance with float option?
That's a great question! Our 5 Watt Radio is IP67 rated and supports NOAA weather channels! Paired with our corrosion resistant locking carabiner, it's a solid radio specifically designed with swift water environments in mind. Feel free to check out our radio comparison page to see which radio would be a good fit for your activities! rockytalkie.com/pages/radiocomparison
This is the BEST video on GMRS range! All the nerds on youtube just say 'iT dEPeNds' in a 20min video and never actually test anything or give a range. Also, where can I get that window mount at 5:41 ?
Thanks so much for the kind words, I'm glad the video was helpful! We're very close to releasing out dash mount so keep your eyes peeled!
I just got into GMRS for my family to use during storm/tornado season here in Oklahoma. When asking GMRS/HAM people about range, they overcomplicated it and never gave a straight answer. This video is exactly what I needed.
This item works Mexico? Oaxaca Mexico
That's a great question! We always recommend checking local regulations before transmitting. Some countries allocate radio frequencies differently so it's important to ensure you won't be interfering with any local services.
Thanks!
No problem!
Do the 5 watt GMRS radios work on UHF or VHF? 🤗
That's a great question! The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) utilizes UHF frequencies. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
@@rockytalkie1682 Thanks for your reply. Just as a matter of interest are you familiar with the Uniden 820s and how does that compare with the Rocky talkie(mountain)? 🤗
Another great question! From what I was able to find, the Uniden 820S is set up for use in Australia and New Zealand. They use different radio frequencies than our radios do. If you're in that part of the world, I'm sure it's a great option!
And where can I buy these don't think I saw them on Amazon ?
You can pick up our radios at rockytalkie.com and we currently offer free 2-day shipping on all orders!
So can I program this on GRS to worry if my friends have like Motorola talk about so I can talk to them lights a channel 2 code for like 35 you know the channel on the code privacy code I can I can turn to those and talk to them if they're on channel 3 privacy code for you know what I'm saying or 4 4 I can do the same thing and talk to them just on the radio itself what does it have to be programmed on a computer ?
Yep! You can use the 5 Watt Radio with your friends' Motorola Talkabout, you'll just match the channel number and privacy code to get them paired up. You can enter these settings right on our radio and we have another video showing you how! If you have any additional questions, you can reach us at support@rockytalkie.com -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Hi, do you have any links or directions to any website to the GMRS. Thank you
Hey Tim, we have a blog post walking folks through the steps to getting a GMRS license. There, you'll have access to lots of great info! If you have any unanswered questions, feel free to drop us a note at support@rockytalkie.com rockytalkie.com/blogs/rocky-talkie-blog/how-to-get-a-gmrs-license
Thank you for the excellent demonstration and explanation. I just received a set of GRMS 5w radios and am impressed with the build quality. I tested them in our neighborhood and only got about a mile of reception, of course this is with houses being the main obstruction. I am wondering if the longer “whip” antenna would help ?
We're so glad it was helpful! As you experienced, urban settings are tough for radio waves. While a longer antenna could improve range a little, your best bet will be either accessing a repeater (to get above obstructions) or physically raising your antenna. You could mount an antenna to your roof if you primarily operate at home. If you'd like to discuss further, drop us a note at support@rockytalkie.com and we can chat further! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Love mine.
Glad to hear it!
Nice work. (former Seattle Mountain Rescue, here)
Do they really put out 5 watts? Because I've been told even Cobra and Midland make 5 w but the engineer people said they only put out 3.5 and you have to have a license at 5:00 right
Hey Jeff, thanks for the great questions! Our 5 Watt Radio really puts out 5 watts of power! Our product team worked hard to ensure our radio was as close to the 5 watt limit as possible, which requires a high level of precision. The radio does require a GMRS license and we have a blog post on our website walking you through the steps. It should only take you about 15 min, costs $35, and will cover you and your family for 10 years! I hope this helps and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Amazing video and explanation. Thank you. Suggestion, eliminate the background music. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus the background music will quickly become an impediment to their enjoyment of your video, and will quickly become annoying. Remember, we came to hear what you have to share, we are not here to fight the music to hear you. Thank you for your consideration.
Thanks for the tip, I'm so sorry about that! I'll make sure we bump down the background music on our future videos. I really appreciate your feedback! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Do you make a marine version of your radio, for sea kayaking where a full size marine radio is unavailable?
We don't currently make a VHF marine band radio but if staying connected with someone on the coast or you partner out at sea, the 5 Watt Radio would totally work! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
Whats the adaptor to use an external antenna? Is it a SO239 female to SMA male?
That's correct, good eye!
What about in urban settings?
That's a great question! Urban settings tend to be the toughest for radio waves and we typically see radios get up to a mile or range. Building materials, cars, and other RF interference can vary so I totally encourage you pushing the limits and seeing what you get in your neck of the woods! -Nate Rocky Talkie Team
I wish you sold these in the uk
Appreciate the quality of information I got from this video. Very simply put, and it very much helped my understanding of a subject I didn't know much about.

I just got mine next day from FedEx here in Colorado and already love it. What a great product that has all the features but in a very simple package.
Thank you so much for your support! I'm so stoked the radios have already stoked you out and if you have any questions down the road, we're here to help!
Very good, clear instruction. I purchased two and am anxiously awaiting delivery on Monday! I have experience with other GMRS and HAM radios and this is nice that there are not tons of buttons, but it's a lot to remember. Perhaps, you could make a weather proof mini cheat sheet? ;-)
Thank you so much for your support and the feedback! I'll run the cheat sheet by our product team and see if we can make that happen. If you have any other thoughts or questions, please don't hesitate to drop us a line! -Nate
Hi I have a question. What kind of batteries or power exist with this radio? Do you use regular batteries? Do you use rechargeable batteries Or do you use solar charge? And my next question is For a full charge how long does the radio last? Thank you
Hey Ralph, those are great questions! Our radios use a specially designed lithium ion rechargeable battery. The battery is totally removable so you can carry spares or replace it as need be. We find the radios last 3-5 days on a single charge with all day use. I hope this helps and if you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
I love this radio! It is simple, tough, and reliable. I cannot wait to use it in the mountains. The attachments are amazing as well, I will be buying another hand mic soon so my wife can have one! Keep up the great work Rockie Talkie!!
Great to hear! We so appreciate your support and feedback! I'm stoked to hear the gear is treating you well and if you have any questions down the road, we're here to help! -Nate
Do you have any info on when you would use a wide band as opposed to a narrow band?
That's a great question! The Mountain Radio is set to Narrow Band by default. The 5 Watt Radio comes with all channels set to Narrow Band by default, but can be switched to Wide Band mode for a given channel. You may find a mobile (vehicle mounted) radio uses wide band and most repeaters use wide band. While the difference isn't huge, you'll have the best audio quality and volume when you match bandwidths between radios. I hope this helps and if you have any additional questions, we're always stoked to chat! -Nate
Awesome video. I learned new things about my radio from watching. Thanks!
I wish I can have a rocky talkie mountain.
I'm completely new to this world. I go canyon seeing and hiking with my son and needed something to keep our communication line open. Got a BAOFENG like my friend has but I felt like I wanted a stronger signal. Just ordered, but this video really helped me click the order button! Thank you for this explanation!
Thank you so much for your support, I'm glad the video helped you make a decision! If you have any additional questions, we're always stoked to chat at support@rockytalkie.com
Hi, Will these radios work well and clear in NYC(Manhattan) ?
That's a great question! We find urban settings to be the toughest for radio transmissions. Typically we get about 1 mile max but your range can vary greatly depending on the situation. I hope this helps and if you would like to discuss further, drop us a note at support@rockytalkie.com we're always stoked to chat radios! -Nate
Is there frequency overlap between for 2 and 5 watt radios?
Absolutely! FRS and GMRS radios use all of the same simplex frequencies. Meaning all 22 channels will work between the radios! If you have any additional questions, feel free to give us a shout at support@rockytalkie.com
Amazing video guys!
Thanks so much!
Hay guys! This really seems like an amazing product .. One question though: Is this using internal, non-removable battery? Meaning that after a few years of use and the battery life cycle is, you're good to throw the entire set to the trash? I'm aware this is (sadly) more a more common practice with Costner electronics like the Apple AirPods etc.. but this would be definitely a no-go for the planned obsolescence aspect of the product. Thanks!
That's a great question! Feel free to check out our video showing how to replace the battery in our Tech Tips playlist! If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We're always stoked to chat radios!
Excellent video - just bought 2 5Ws

I would love to see this video with one more test of the 17cm antenna. Love all of your products!
