Before going to Africa I watched dozens of videos. It still didn't prepare me for my first close encounter with a wild elephant. Their size is awe inspiring. Magnificent animals.

im 25, live in california but first went to south africa as a family in 2014 and have been back over 20 times since. We ended up buying a share on a house in greater kruger, olifants area. Blyde river canyon is one of my favorite spots, especially the waterfall hike at swadini

fascinating footage of elephants paying a visit to camps aside; the attire of many tourists in this video is surprising too. walking barefoot through sand in dried riverbanks or even water/creeks, bush walks in shorts? is there no danger of anything waiting in the water? no pesty insects biting bare skin? no thorny bushes?
Hi, well observed, this is very unusual. That walk in the river is in Makuleke (Northern Kruger Park). It's one of the only places where you can walk a river in Kruger Park, and only when the water levels are right (usually in winter). When the water levels are to deep, crocs become a risk. It's one of the most beautiful places and an absolute unique experience. Thorns are a problem as soon as you get out of the river. Shorts are fine in South Africa, the biggest risk are pepper ticks, very itchy and annoying and can cause tick bite fever. But can be avoided pretty well by checking yourself after every walk.
