A guy and his dog out on a mission to finally enjoy the great outdoors after ignoring it all his life.
I am here to show you the joys, trials and tribulations of enjoying life in a tent, on a trail and (one day soon) in the mountains.
My goal here is to document my journey and to inspire others to lace up their boots and get outside too.
If I can, so can you!
This channel will show you solo and group wild camping on the moors, in woodlands, by rivers and more.
Future plans include mountain hikes, car camping, hammock camping and if i'm ever brave enough, bivvy camping!
Follow along as I determine the best gear for me and share my opinions with you to help you make good choices about what you really need and what you don't.
The star of the show is Dave the Dog and I am just his backup dancer!

Failed Dartmoor Wild Camp & Hike at Cox Tor
I've tried to find this but went in from Houndtor. Is is basically Holwell Tor and down? Looks like (from the IS pics) that you went down to Becka Brook them back up again? Lovely vid 👍
I went from Hayor, on to the quarry then down into the valley. I then took a walk up toward Hound Tor, but was fighting the light so returned to the Brooke
the inner is still going to get wet.
I have just bought one from Go-Outdoors & I am very pleased with it.
I've been used to carrying a Vango soul 300 and now for me this is a very light tent. My phoxx2 has a fab stitched about a ft along the bottom of the zip preventing it from being fully zipped across that I've never seen in any other review. Any one else have this ?

I drink coffee from my jetboil all the time, I don't see how it's dangerous.. The handle works just fine, you didn't explain why you have a problem with it. You didn't support your doubt on how many litres it will boil with any fact. The jetboil is twice as fuel efficient than your lightweight option, so you would need to bring twice the fuel to boil the same amount. The jetboil doesn't need a secondary windscreen either, and the cup on the base is only to measure out a portion of freeze dried food. The jetboil pot is plenty big enough for a boil in the bag meal, with hot water left over for a brew. You claim in your pinned comment you actually like your jetboil, but then slagged it off for the entire video. You admitted in the beginning you got a deal on the price, as where some MRS stoves are more than £100 which doesn't include the pot and the gas, a very flawed argument.
I presume you could this with the Phoxx 1 v2…?
Had this tent for a year now. Used 30 times now over that year and 18 times in the Highlands of Scotland and it's done everything you would want a tent to do
I have a zip, and it works perfectly for my use. I "hike" around on a ebike, and the fact to have a hot coffee, chocolate, tomatosoup or whatever; on the go is priceless, its almost faster than my waterboiler at home😊
I always use a washing peg to keep the keep the door up
I was wondering if you know of any similar mod for the OEX Rakoon 2?
Sorry, I don’t own the Rakoon so haven’t a clue!
I keep to my Vango 300
Thank-you for filming this. When you Negative get comments just delete them. Cannot please everyone. So don't take to heart. For me you answered questions I need to make informed choice. I have owned and extensively used 16 different tents in my life (may be forgetting a few). Some were great, some garbage. The monger 2 seems to have thought it thru and com up with a fine tent. No tent will replace your bed at home or a good hotel room, so if you are not prepared to sacrifice some luxury for travel experience, then stay home!😂😊 thank-you for the video...
Great, honest review...Tip, "Never work with animals or children!" :-)))
I contacted Naturehike today to see if I can order buckles for the groundsheet so I can make it a fly-only setup.
aw little Dave
Im definitely a jetboil fanboy but dont own a zip, The OEX heiro is half the price and Twice the kit!! If your going jetboil, Flash 2.0 or minimo all the way, Also the little mighty mo is a cracking little unit has a piezo and regulator for about £55/60 👍 ATB
On Dartmoor a 'Lake' is a stream usually draining out of a boggy area so Red Lake is actually the stream draining from Red Lake Mire. The ponds near Red Lake tip are either clay pits or settling ponds associated with the clay works there.
Thank you for taking the time to make the video
i think they have changed the phoxx 2 v 2...mine came with loops on the part that the poles pass through :)
You don’t have to have noise - turn the thing down and it is quiet. It is far more efficient on fuel than the BRS 300T and will also burn better in windy weather. I fought against having a Jetboil for years, but gave in and wish I’d done it years ago - superb bit of kit 😬
100% it's why everyone compares everything else to jetboil, there is some other great kit out there, but I'm a jetboil fanboy 😅, have the Flash 2.0 the minimo, the mighty mo, Also the skillet and 1.5L ceramic pot, all quality stuff,
2kg isn’t very heavy
I am using this tent on my first wild camp as a 6ft1" 85kg guy with a german shepherd dog next month. Will post my results
How did it go? My 15 year old son uses this tent and he is 5 foot 3 and seems to get on well with it
@@ianwatson194 There was just about enough room for the two of us, cosy but manageable. Will definitely use it again, set up and pack up was quick and easy too 👌🏻
@@accidentalcoleslaw that was meant to say 6 foot 3 lol
@ianwatson194 Oh wow, big boy 😂 But yeah it was a decent size, okay sharing with the dog but I'd probably go for a bigger model if sharing with a human
Great review. Bought one recently but have yet to use it in the real world although it definitely looks and feels very good. Is a chair whilst wild camping a luxury? Very much so but like you said the trade off is another kg on your back but as I’m already carrying close to 100 kg one more is purely academic
Good review! I've got the Phoxx 1 V2, cracking little tent for a bikepacker! Not sure why people complain about it's size, unless they're a 'big un'? At 5'11 and 72kg it's plenty for me to crash into, although it's complemented nicely with a little 2x2 tarp. Also bought a Bobcat, it pitches like a dogs back leg, and the inner hangs down like an old pair of drawers, seriously floored design! It's going on ebay, bloody junk!
Very creepy introduction
Hi, Great review, but was wondering how well the bottom of the tent stands up to wear n tear? I have just bought this tent but was surprised that the bottom of the tent is not reinforced, it's just the same material as the rest of tent, and there are tape seals running along inner bottom! Do these seals stay intact after frequent use? Is the bottom easily punctured by gravel n sharp stones? I have decided to buy a tarp groundsheet just in case. Appreciate your thoughts on that. Happy camping! Jay.
Great review, best utube review on this tent. The clearance between outer and inner was of interest. 👍
I enjoyed this video right up until you started being a dick with the dog!
I thought you could probably do that, now I know. Thanks!
A lot of info. I’m hoping to go wild camping with my dog too, I was considering the Phoxx 1 but after watching this I think the Phoxx 11 seems a better choice albeit with the heavier weight. Cheers
Good review!
I was thinking about this tent, but now feel i'd prefer a tent I can sit up in.
I used this tent near Pembrey beach in Wales in 50mph wind and maybe I pitched it incorrectly however I felt the wind passing over me and was flapping so much I left the tent and went into my car. However I like your review and say hi to Dave for me :)
Respect 👍
Great video 😂 & love the tent. Need a bigger wild camping tent than my 1-person OEX Bobcat 1 & I think this could be the one for me, especially as I now know if needed I can pitch outter first lol 😂 Thanks for making this video & hope u soon warmed up 😀
thank yoooiw so match sir!
The zip works great for boiling water for whatever your hot water needs are. I use the crap 💩 out of mine on my snowboarding trips to the mountain. It melts snow very fast…
Thank you. Great information. Have one on the way, so the decision was made, but really appreciate a couple of your points -- especially about the ground cloth, so I didn't order one that I wouldn't need, and about your real world experwith the tie backs. Length looks a little shorter than I'd realised, but will be OK I'm sure.
Been going here since the early nineties with rangers, love it so debs xx
Nude hiking is an amazing experience! 👍👍
Some of the best unexpected swearing on CZcams 😂. Great video really helpful
I have the same tent ( purchased 2023) Firstly I think my rain fly might've been cut a bit small because I have to really bend the cross bar to attach the rainfly toggles on each side, Same for you? Secondly only inner and outer came with buckles, not my footprint, so I had to DIY a solution to be able to pitch rain fly first.. With my Cloud up 2 everything was top notch and the overall quality of the buckles and straps a lot better..
Give this man a raise!! Thanks for the demonstration!!
Haha - subscribed when I saw the dog. Been looking for another tent. I have a Vaude and a Tarpent - both quite dear - but I got wet in Wales last year and after a tent just for the lovely U.K. and places like Tibet - rather than the Serengeti or Karoo where space is more important as I am allergic to leopards and honey badgers!!! Cheers
How are you happy with the choice of color? Does the bright colors attract more insects them the darker one?
I’m very happy with the colour. Had it been available at the time I purchased I’d have gone for the slate blue instead, but overall I’m satisfied with my choice. Bright colours attracting insects is a discussion I’ve only recently become familiar with (in regards to tent colourways) so wasn’t a consideration at the time of purchase. To be honest, I have never seen a difference in bug attraction between bright coloured tents and duller ones. I feel that the issue with bugs is the same with the Mongar 2 as it is with my (Coyote Brown) Lanshan 1 and 2 Pro, my olive green OEX Phoxx 2 and Bobcat and even my 3FUL ZhengTu 2. In my opinion bugs are more likely to be attracted to my body heat and sweat than the colour of my tent, but I’m no science guy so might be wrong.
Oh, and great question by the way!
