    I went to the library and checked out Atlas Shrugged. I cannot believe it was written around 70 years ago... it's as if it were written today.. sad, and angry at the same time

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před 6 dny

      I'm glad you read it! Yeah, ots sad and crazy to think it is as old as it is with how relevant what's happening is. But it's just cycles repeating, if you're up to reading more, the Forth Turning cycle is something you should dig into. There's a reason she wrote her stuff back then and why it's relevant now. (She lived it, that was about four turnings ago.)

    Thanks for the video, very informative. I liked the casual style of it. I have my own personal library of books, but I also buy books for resale. Though I buy a lot of books at friends of the library sales, I rarely buy library books unless they are. A vintage or an aquarium book, or some interesting rare subject. I haven’t had much luck with selling X library books, because people look at it as though it was stolen or something. Not all libraries stamp them to state that they are removed from the library system or withdrawn, etc. There’s usually too many stamps and stickers to remove or cover up , so I just stay in the title and description that it is an next library book. Most people don’t want the especially if that same book is available for a few dollars more without Library stampings. Sometimes I buy ex library books at estate sales and yard sales and even swap meets, but in many of those cases, I think the books were simply checked out from the library then never returned. So in a way those books might happen stolen unintentionally.

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před 7 dny

      Yeah, all those stamps and the other stuff you get from libraries can definitely hurt the value of a book, I usually end up undercutting everyone by 25%, roughly, if I have competition selling the same book that isn't from a library. That's very true about some libraries not stamping books that are withdrawn. Personally I prefer these, even with the risk that they could have been stolen, because I think all those stamps are unsightly, but I'm buying those books from libraries themselves 99.999% of the time, so I'm fairly sure they aren't stolen. Hahaha I've considered stamping those books myself, doing so far more conservatively than the libraries often do, but folks seem to like a book that is less marred.

      @@antiquebookcollective I went to a friends of the library book sale recently in very affluent city on the West Coast. Last two hours of the sale you could fill a large grocery bag for three dollars. The first bag I filled with CDs and DVDs, I fit about 60 in the bag. If you do the map that’s pretty good price, all the CDs were jazz and classical so I will sell some of those in lots. That seems to be quite an easy way to put 20 CDs on eBay for $35 with free shipping. Good way to turn less than a dollar into about $24. The sale had hundreds and hundreds of cookbooks. It took a lot of time to go through them, but I found some real gems. None of the books have library stamps. Nice thing about it being an affluent area and they were hardback cookbooks about half of them were signed by the celebrity chef who wrote them, so that added to the value. Thanks again for your video.

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před 8 dny

      Sounds like it's got to be some cool books! I'd 10/10 recommend an ozone generator. Put all of the books in a large room with a good ozone generator (you can buy them on Amazon for like 80 bucks) and that will get rid of the smell. I'd give them a whole week. Be sure to space the books out so the ozone can get to them on all sides, also try to open the books up as well so the pages can be exposed to the ozone. Tobacco smoke is no match for the power of ozone, I've seen it work every single time. I know 80 bucks or so sounds like a lot for a piece of tech you only really need right now, but it's super valuable and will more than pay for itself in what you'll be able to ask for all of your books once the smell is gone! And, if I'm wrong, you only had the machine for a week--you can return it! But I'm not wrong. Those things are INSANELY effective. And I specified doing all of this in a large room just so you can have all of your books spread out to get ozone-d, you can do it in a small room just fine, but it'll take longer if you want to open the books up and ensure the tobacco smoke is gone. Hope this helps!

    Thank you. When ppl apply drying oils like linseed oil to leather to make it more flexible, that flexibility will only last so long no. As linseed oil dries through oxidation, it hardens, and those fibers will harden and become more and more brittle I assume. If you paint on fabric like cotton or linen with linseed oil, the canvas needs to be first protected by rabbit skin glue or gesso, otherwise those fibers will over time get destroyed because of the linseed oil. Applying linseed oil directly to fabric is considered a big no-no in the world of art preservation, there's a whole industry of sealants to make sure linseed or safflower oil never directly comes into contact with the fabric, because they're drying oils, they dry through oxidation. So I wonder if it does not damage leather in the long run too.

Mink oil or neatsfoot oil is sometimes used, they will not harden through oxidation over time like linseed, and they're also less viscous than castor oil so can penetrate thin leather of book covers well. There's specialised oils for leather preservation too. I looked over some studies on ScienceDirect, the best preserved leather books covers were those not treated with anything lol, although they didn't have all these chemical processes to purify oil we do now.

      Interesting! Never head about that for fabrics and such. I've heard from many an antique book person that linseed oil is the best thing out there for leather book covers. Personally I like mink oil and lanolin more if I had to choose just one, but I find the blends I use are pretty nice. Thanks for the very informative and jnterestung comment though, I didn't know all of that before. :)

      That's very interesting that untreated leather books did the best in that study! I wouldn't have suspected. I'm curious if you have to oil books from now until eternity once they are oiled then. I know that I will keep oiling the leather books that I get that need it, I'm talking the ones that are brittle, but your info is super neat all the same. I'll definitely rethink oiling any books that aren't in dire need now, so thanks for saving those books! :)

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před měsícem

      It shouldn't, no. If you do have a wet or mildewy smell then odds are that you're dealing with mold and not simple foxing. Mold isn't necessarily the nail in a coffin for a book, but you'll want to be sure that the mold is dead before returning your book to the shelves or else it'll spread. I've got some other videos on mold on the channel, so check those out if you need more info there! :)

    I wonder, could you use an ozone generator? Someone may have already mentioned it but just in case....the ozone won't 'remove' mold but it will kill the mold and remove the smell. We have one my husband uses on old cars but I never thought to try it on my books. hmmm, thinking now. You would have to clean it so there is the next issue. It may just dust off?

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před měsícem

      YES! And I LOVE my ozone generator too. I've mentioned in quite a few replies and other videos that I recommend and use ozone generators because of how great they are at killing bad stuff on books, be it bugs, mold, or smells. For me, I had a large set of books that were super moldy and, after an extended period of time being exposed to ozone as I cleaned them, I could wipe off most of the mold. I ended up going back through the book with Clorox wipes on the edges of the text block to be extra-sure that the mold was dead. I then hit every single page with alcohol wipes to further cleanse the books. They look fantastic today and I'm still observing them to see how they fare. So far I am 10/10 pleased with the results though. (I also oiled their leather and used some anti-mold essential oils that I blended in with the oils that I applied to the leather.)

    • @antiquebookcollective
      @antiquebookcollective Před měsícem

      Most are doing either the absolute minimum to meet their needs or living off of friends/relatives, from what I've heard. Interestingly enough, the same sort of thing happened in Atlas Shrugged. Not saying that Ayn Rand was prophetic, but she was well-researched and saw firsthand what collectivist policies were doing in and around her homeland. History repeats, the characters and places might change, but it all ends up being like a Hallmark movie. Same plot time and time again. (Of course, there's stuff you can do to change stuff up and help yourself or your country though, not everything is inevitable! :) There's always hope!)

TIme looking for boxes/ Shipping materials? Time posting books? Time packaging books? Cost for gas, books, materials etc? . I added all this stuff up and I make minimum wage when all is said and done - at the end of the day etc. Thanks for sharing by the way. If I didn't have another job to pay expenses and couldn't deduct rent as an expense from taxes I might be making less than minimum wage.

      Yep, I went over those numbers in another video, if memory serves me, and a hundred an hour was a little conservative, actually. That being said, that sort of return is far from guaranteed. When I started I'd venture a guess to say I was under minimum wage myself, but I learned, adapted, and found that the high-end items were the only thing that really paid off well for me. I tried a few other things for this channel since I got questions, but I've since called that quits. Antique books are my thing. Antique Christian books from the late 1800s are my particular breadwinner.

    So I tried hydrogen peroxide and made the mistake of rubbing a little, which causes significant damage. Though I thought bleach sounded nuts (and initially dismissed this video), I figured the book can't get any worse and found bleach works really great: dip a q-tip in bleach, squeeze the q-tip once in a bit of paper towel to remove excess liquid, and then dab the mold spots. While it does bleach and warp the spot you dab, I find that a warped bleach white spot looks much, much nicer than a smooth dark mold spot. Obviously don't do this on anything valuable, but I'm glad I came across this video otherwise I would've never considered bleach. I wish I'd taken before and after pictures... the results are really incredible. For less than 30 minutes of work I've ended up with a rather presentable copy (despite the rubbing damage) that I had previously considered throwing away. I'm still going to vacuum seal it with some silica packs and keep this book away from the rest for a while.

      Glad bleach was able to help you with your book! Sorry the hydrogen peroxide didn't do the trick. Like you I wasn't too keen on the idea of using bleach on an old book, but, like you said, things can't really get worse than moldy! Hahaha Good call on quarantining the book, I think I mentioned tossing it in the freezer, like some folks do. I'd also leave it out in the sun for a couple of hours to let the UV light do its thing a bit too. Hope you don't have to fight any more moldy books in the future! :)
