Should You Keep Others Close Or Far From You? - Jocko Willink
My favorite responses to angry people: 'settle down charlie brown', 'relax tampax' and 'no worry beef curry'
Not sure if "have you called the repair guy" works to be honest. It sounds like you are interrogating them about what they have done and will put them on the defensive. Shall I call the repair guy might be better, though it does mean you have to do it!
Pretend you are angrier would work too
People feel like they are heard, so doing this will assure them that they've been heard. Then redirect to the solution. Pretty smart.
I am a big guy, if I get even slightly angry and a little loud people think I am going to destroy the world! It is funny. A guy I know is a loud mouth douche, always screaming. I said to him if I acted and said the things he says amd does, they'd call the cops on me. He said people are assholes to.big guys. He wasn't lying.
Many years ago during a training exercise we were taught to replace "calm down. " with "how can I help you ? ". It's a simple technique but it yields a very different response.
Jocko is the expert on everything. đ
Well put.
Aka how to empathize with angry people.
Heâs exactly right. This is stuff I do.
be angrier and stronger.
This probably doesnât work as well if youâre the supply department đ
That's really resonating with me. Thanks for sharing!
Just steal from people
If the only thing that made my wife angry was the ice machine, then I'd be a blissful man.
forkin hell thats genius, new level unlocked
Wife: "The ice machine's not working!" Husband: "Big deal, the supply department is two weeks late!" Wife: "Oh, okay, my problem is not so big after all"
Let's remember that anger does not exist; we become angry because we have imagined an event that makes us mad. Our imagination is the root cause of all of our emotional outbursts. Try this: imagine your boss bad-mouthing you in the lunch room and people can overhear him or her? You imediately become angry. Your imagination has played its Ace of Spades. You explode simply because you have imagined an event that is humiliating but that has never happened.
Sometimes Iâm angry just to feel something
This is sort of common sense when it comes to deescalation.

I feel very grateful that there are people like Jocko in the world. He is a prime example of what a great leader looks and sounds like. I would have been totally thrilled to have him as a commander.
Eh, I've seen plenty of times when someone being told they needed to chill did work. Hell, I've been the person it works on.
Iâve finally figured this out years ago and it works great. I have to get more dramatic for some women. They generally like being supported by men.
If you get outsmarted by a meathead you got probs.
I admire and respect Jokko .... God bless you.
sounds more like anger empathy
Why does this basic human knowledge need to be a podcast episode?
But also, why does a spouses or a friends Ă©motion need to be "handled"? Why can't the other person just meet them where there at? It's actually ok to be an actual person out in the world. You don't need masking or a "technique" for everything. Unless you have some sort of condition.
Anything military related, ok. Relationship advice... I'm good.
People like this deserve the vote into politics, not bread politicians , this man speaks from experience and to listen or not is up to you , the words are valuable and jocko would have my vote
I don't feel I'm very good with interpersonal issues, but I have never understood why some people respond with 'calm down." It's like throwing gas on a fire.
This is a fairly old technique outlined by Tony Robins back in many of his earlier audio courses and books along with lots of other useful stuff. I see quite a few of these new 'gurus' more or less just repackaging his work. So to anyone that is buying this stuff. Just go pick up an old Tony Robins book (audio book is even better for his stuff) and have a listen. He has a bunch of them now and literally all the info these newer guys are spouting are just recycled takes on stuff he has established decades ago.
But what do you do when there is nothing you can identify with, e.g. 'turn up the thermostat, it's 69 F in here, and i am freezing, i'm gonna die of frostbite!'
quiet interesting that the most natural human things need to be trained and explained in videos, courses and big books.
Mental jiu jitsu, take charge of the energy of your opponent, and redirect it.
- The ice machine isn't working ! - Because you're too hot ! đ€
Ice from Alaska sounds familiar
This is psychology 101
Definitely pisses me off when people simply tell me to calm down. That ship already sailed
Remove the truth again... WTF happened to his face, His neck throw up??
"The ice machine is not working... you're just like my father!!"
"Why the hell haven't you done that report yet? I asked for it 2 weeks ago?"...."Oh man, I'm such a useless waste of space, how did I even get this job? So what can I do to make this right?"....Doesn't work if YOU are the problem.
an operational ice machine is the pillar of a happy long lasting marriage
This is really good actually.
wife: âwhy are u watching porn?!â me:âdamn why would i watch porn we gotta stop thisâ
1:50 Look, youâre not wrongâŠbut as an asshole, the 2nd option is far more entertaining
Not possible with direct accusations. Someone angry about something is easy to handle. Someone accusing you of something you were not responsible of is very different. Needs a very deep emotional control.
Jockoâs probably right⊠but something I hate having to do is to figure out how to talk to people that donât know how to behave. They should adjust their attitude. I shouldnât have to adjust to them.
Wife: âthe ice machineâs not workingâ Me: Damn..âhave âyouâ called the repair guy?â Can you see the flaw here? đ
