Hey, welcome to the channel! I'm Dr. Josiah Newton and I have my PhD in chemistry (I am an organic chemist specializing in fluorine and sulfur). We're creating videos about science, but mostly chemistry. I hope that our videos will provide you with some new insight, or at the very least I hope that you will enjoy my anecdotes about organic chemistry.
As a research chemist I’ve always found it enjoyable to share my experiences in the lab with other chemistry enthusiasts. I am always up for questions and discussion.
The community hangs out on the TC discord (discord.gg/thatchemist).
I can be reached on Discord or Twitter. You are especially welcome to DM me if you have some cool ideas for videos, or if you have a unique occupation that could be of interest to viewers of the channel.
Sponsors interested in integrations are welcome to contact me via the email listed below (visible on Desktop).

I got Diethyl Ether on my gloves many times, and it soaks right through. It leaves them feeling icy-hot and kinda painful. Also, I know what shirts I used to wear at that lab because they all have tiny holes in the fabric. I tried wearing a respirator while cleaning glassware with acetone because the fumes bothered me, and they TOLD ME NO because I was using my own PPE. "Do you have one for me to wear?" "No, it's not a problem. You'll get used to it." Probably should've reported them. Edit: Almost forgot the best one! a client sample arrived (mostly factories) labeled PCP. It was about 500g of white powder. Everyone noticed a tingling sensation after removing the lid, as the powder was very fine and had no issue floating off from the top of the jar. Scary times.
You mispronounce Leslie Hough's surname. It's "huff", not "hew".
Nitroglycerin top tier
Always funny to see geology treated as an afterthought when its applications are some of the most critical pillars of society 😂
I personally do xylitol lower to F because it's a very mid sweetener, which inconveniences me because since it's so immensely toxic to dogs, I have to check anything "sugar free" for it just in case it's one of the rare products that uses it. Separately, since I grow plants for a living, I can share my experience with Stevie. If you're in a fairly warm area it is VERY easy to grow, propagate, and process for sweetening things like tea or cooking. I agree strongly on the taste though. But it is very efficient.
Can't some of the actinides be sweet, akin to lead?
Some other sugar alternatives include rare sugars such as allulose and tagatose, mogrosides derived from monkfruit, different rebaudiosides that are present in stevia extract (specifically RebM, since it apparently doesn't have the bitter aftertaste of other rebaudiosides), and sweet proteins such as brazzein and thaumatin. There are so many sweeteners I could imagine a part two of this video if it ends up doing well.
I make my own blend of non-sucrose sweetener at home, mixing allulose, sucralose, and dextrin. The sucralose brings up the otherwise somewhat lackluster sweetness of the allulose, and the dextrin cuts it down to something you can measure about 1:2 for regular sugar, while ensuring I get *some* dietary fiber in my otherwise fiber-poor diet.

First day of chem lab "never taste anything you're working with", numerous chemists licking their fingers "ohh this is sweet".
0:00 I like your funny words magic man
On the topic of heavy water, I noticed that when I have a craving for sweets it usually goes away when I drink a lot of water. I also notice a (very faint) level of sweetness in bottled water.
Just a little lead
Hank Green's cancer is in remition and he's doing well now. Just an FYI
After years of having stomach cramps about half the time I went running and weekly migraines, I found out that aspartame was the cause of both! I noticed that on days I didn’t have any chewing gum, I never had stomach cramps. I then cut out all aspartame and then my migraines went down in frequency 10-fold. I’m super careful about aspartame now, but for a while I could trace back most of my migraines to accidentally consuming aspartame a 8-12 hours earlier.
Your sucralose went bad it’s not supposed to be brown.
The English language already has its own word for umami. It’s savory
22:24 I've been working with lead and vinegar. I also noticed a sweet taste on my fingers! I should commercialize this!
Just FYI, sucralose should not *at all* look like that. I've used the stuff plenty at work, it should be a nondescript white powder just like any other, like powder sugar.
I was going to say - that is NOT what it should look like. The sucralose I have in my kitchen is pure white.
"diurea is actually used in bread flour" has me rolling 😂😂
If E&F made this tierlist F tier would be yellow.
Don't know if you've actually done a video about this, but perhaps do a video about actual sugars? I know that there are many different ones that exist, but not sure how many.
There are *lots* of possible sugars, and we tastes a whole bunch in this video Which Sugar Tastes the Best? (Sugar Lore) czcams.com/video/zcw7I5bT4Gk/video.html
remember the BZ grenade?
Just for fun...extract th sucralose to possibly recover triphenylphosphine oxide. Gabriel amine synthesis with anhydrous sodium saccharine in dry DMF.
Any article that goes on about "damaging the gut" and thereby causing all kinds of illnesses I just immediately flag as 19th-century pseudoscience. Real research would not describe it that way. Too, anything that has been routinely ingested by millions of people over multiple decades cannot be spoken of or studied in the abstract. So, for example, it is absurd to say that sucralose MIGHT have an effect unless you can demonstrate that the incidence of that effect has increased with the use of sucralose. The techniques of epidemiology are more appropriate.
It would be better to call them "sucrose alternatives"
I'm so happy to hear you without the fan blaring in the background. Can you be a sexy mfer and send me some doi links for studies on detrimental health effects of 100% synth sweeteners? Say, your 3 favourite sci papers on the subject.
Dude when you talk about cooling sensation with erythritol... I swear I feel this way with powdered sugar for some reason and no one know what I'm talking about.
Yeah I know what you mean and it’s a similar feeling
Which is best for padding out aspartame in baking?
Main reason why I don't like artificial sweeteners is the horrible after taste and the way they end up messing with my stomach to the point where I feel I have a bunch of gas in there.
Having an intolerance to sugar alcohols, i have to rate them all f-tier. And they put those in everything today 🤮
I just realized the peanuts I were eating contained sodium saccharin and acesulfame.
Aspartame is great if you want to get cancer !
Xylitol is used in a whole lot of gums, most of the chewing gum in Finland is sweetened with xylitol.
IIRC it's antibacterial, my dentist specifically recommended chewing gum containing xylitol
Xylitol deserves a B in my opinion
Why did you rank toxiferine higher than botulinum toxin? Toxiferine has an LD50 of 10-60 µg/kg. Botulinum toxin has an LD50 of 1-2 ng/kg. It's more than 20000 times more poisonous!
You forgot glycerine. One carbon less than erythritol.
Aspartame causes the most horrible room-clearing farts in me. I had to stop consuming any product with aspartame, because the smell of the farts it induces was so bad, no one could *literally* be next to me. It made people nauseous, including myself.
Teresa you’re so cute!💕
Thank you very much! ❤
Jesus loves you ❤️ Please repent and turn to Him and receive Salvation before it's too late. The end times written about in the Bible are already happening in the world. Jesus is the son of God and He died for our sins on the cross and God raised Him from the dead on the third day. Jesus is waiting for you with open arms but time is running out. Please repent and turn to Him before it's too late. Accept Jesus into your heart and invite Him to be Lord and Saviour of your life and confess and believe that Jesus is Lord, that He died for your sins on the cross and that God raised Him from the dead. Confess that you are a sinner in need of God's Grace and ask God to forgive you for all your sins through Jesus. Jesus loves you. Nothing can compare to how He loves you. When He hung on that cross, He thought of you. As they tore open His back, He thought of your prayer time with Him. As the thorns dug into His head, He thought of you spending time reading the Bible. As the spears went into His side, He imagined embracing you in heaven. Please repent and turn to Jesus now before it is too late. His heart longs to be with you but time is almost up.
Erythritol is my favorite, it’s about half as sweet as sucrose/fructose and doesn’t have much of a bad aftertaste. Where it gets really fun is when you nitrate it.
That clearly was not sucralose.
Aw, how _sweet_ of you.
👺
There are much better websites to watch two people gagging on small pricks with no talking.
It would be cool if you made a Chemistry meme review
Moral of the story: lick your fingers
me who can handle some level of bitterness, maybe I can take this I can't swallow medicines I usually drink. I needed to bite meds, so I always taste the bitterness and weird tastes of meds. Paracetamol, many types of Antibiotics, Antivirals, and other meds and multivitamins Paracetamol is the least bitter meds I tasted, some Clindamycin pills has a weird spicy taste, but Clindamycin alone is not that bitter. In all antibiotics I took, Amoxicillin is the least bitter and most tolerable taste wise antibiotics I took Sulfonamide has the weirdest taste, soury bitter When I was a kid, I needed to take Acyclovir. It tastes bitter but no other weird taste, bitterness its between paracetamol and amoxicillin Vitamin C/Ascorbic Acid has that acidic bitter taste, at least meds add sugars on those. Though some has weird soury taste. Mixed multivitamins has mixed tastes, some tastes salty, some tastes bitter.
I made explosive pellets with erythritol by making erythritol tetranitrate, which is similar to PETN. czcams.com/video/Lu--StofJrg/video.htmlsi=Y59fKNDwyqLXdxsl
You didnt try Lead(II)Acetate, its a great sweetener with little side effects and zero calories🌚
