The Department of African American Studies is an intellectual community committed to producing, refining and advancing knowledge of Black people in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and Africa. A key component of our mission is to interrogate the meanings and dimensions of slavery and colonialism, and their continuing political, social and cultural implications.
Our faculty is drawn from disciplines as diverse as anthropology, cultural studies, linguistics, literature, history, sociology, performance, and creative writing. We are united by a relentless commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge through excellence in scholarship and pedagogy that are at once interdisciplinary and innovative.

Nite Bjuti at BAMPFA: Black Studies Collaboratory Residency

Presented as part of an artist residency with the Black Studies Collaboratory, housed in the Department of African American Studies, co-hosted by@BAMPFA.
Nite Bjuti is an improvising Afro-Caribbean trio tapping electronics, vocalism, bass, Haitian drum rhythms, sampling, and spoken word to create a sound that is “one of the most exciting and original I’ve heard this year” (BBC). Following their performance, the members of the trio-Candice Hoyes, Val Jeanty, and Mimi Jones-will also lead an interactive conversation on archives, sonic storytelling, and collaboration, moderated by Professor Tianna Paschel of the Department of African American Studies. They will also be joined by UCB student dancer Juliana Fadwick.

Thank you! I'd only just learned about the OCS in the chapter in "Want to Start a Revolution?: Radical Women in the Black Freedom Struggle" a couple of months ago. What an amazing story. I am looking forward to learning more about it as Angela LeBlanc-Ernest completes her work.
