This song is based on an old Italian story about an ugly man who locked himself in his castle to barricade himself from the world. One day, he sees a women who snuck into his garden picking his flowers. He was initially angry, but as days went by and he kept seeing her, he slowly and one-sidedly falls in love with her. He can't approach her because of his deformity. He eventually realizes that she's been picking the flowers to sell because she is poor. He wants to help her. But afraid that she may run away if she sees his face. So he figures the only way to help her is to create a special flower that can only bloom in this special garden so that she can sell for a fortune. One day he realizes she hasn't been coming to the garden. He then figures out that she died of starvation. Kind of like Beauty and the Beast.

I didn’t take it as cutting each other down with words? I more so thought of the “strings attached” thing. And then cutting the strings represented them cutting their ties with the relationship/breakup and moving on. Like they watched all the previous memories and are ready to let go (him more than her).

Its my ultimate fave song of IU. 2nd song i heard when im starting to know her in 2019. First is through the night. At first im just curious why the title is knees. Then when she started singing i laugh at the first line coz how did she know im sitting and the only one awake in the middle of the night. Then next lines slowly hitting me hard and i only think was my late mother who died a year ago when i watched this in 2019. The pain was still fresh for me. Then the chorus comes i cant help but im starting to cry coz i have that kind of memories too with my mother lying in her knees while brushing my hair to make me sleep.. she really makes me cry so hard with this song. Like everything she writes hits me hard and missed my mother so much 😭

Your interpretation matches mine. Yes, the woman picks up a streetwalker in front of a strip club and takes her home because she resembles her dead mother. The story's just that dark. IU said the song is split into stories about 3 women. First her mother, second a young schoolmate, and third an unnamed and uncommented upon woman, though indications are she's talking about her feelings for her departed friend Sulli again. The main character is played by Chinese actress Tang Wei. most famous in the west for starring in the Ang Lee erotic thriller 'Lust, Caution' (opposite Tony Leung, who had a cameo in NewJeans mv 'Cool With You'). The oblique allusion to 'lust, caution' seems significant to IU's relationship with other women.

This a song about Mothers and Daughters, although IU admits it is quite a confusing story(s) and she said it not important to understand everything. But before getting deeper, there is one thing that you must understand and that is what a Morbius Strip is and what happens if you find yourself in one. A Morbius Strip is a mathematical formula that some believe proves time travel is possible. You can make a Morbius Strip by taking a Strip of paper, giving one end a half turn and taping it to the other end. You end up with a continuous loop. If you are walking along on one you can't determine clockwise from counter clockwise or up from down. If you start at point A and travel to entire loop upon returning to point A you will be the mirror image of yourself. It sounded like when you first saw that reference you seem to suggest that it was a reference to a seedy active. The sign is actually hanging above the entrance to a restaurant. There are 2 additional lines on the sign that become easier to read in the final scene. They read "A story of a mothers subconsciousness". When Tang Wei and IU switch positions in the car that is a reference to the Morbius Strip, which is also a reference to these events repeating themselves, which is also shown in the last scene. The Hid her Mother away is a metaphor for suppressing the memories. The Mother has done the same. Tang Wei has returned to retrieve those few memories that she hid away in the floor. She see her mother in the image of her memory of her. The color of lighting plays and important role as well, where red is fantasy/memory and blueish is reality. It is IU in the trunk of the car. Again this is a metaphor, where the daughter has gotten the keepsakes of her mother she hide away and is now taking them with her, she has placed them in the trunk. The daughter having grown older has a better understanding of her mother now. The final scene could be several different things and is one I had a hard time placing in to a context that worked with the rest of the story line. That being said I have settled on the following. With the daughter having in someway reconciled with her mother she returns to the car and there is her mother in the present time. The daughters memory of her mother is replaced with the reality of her mother. The picture of the mother and young girl in the early part of the MV is replaced at the end with a picture of the grown daughter and the older mother. They are both dressed in the same clothes they are wearing in that last scene. F is friend and L is Love. The red narrative cards clearly suggest this has the MV proceeds, using the word Friend in a phrase them cutting to "it is about F" them using the word Love in a phrase and cutting to "it is about Love". These are obviously different than the earlier chorus lines. There were 4 generations of women involved in this project. The narrator was Pattie Kim who was a very famous Korean singer and is now 82. Jo Won Sun, who the the 2nd featured singer is 52. Hyein who is 15, IU 31 and Tang Wei who is 42. Let me say one thing about the idea about being about "forbidden". IU is highly unlikely to deal with that type of topic. It is certainly a taboo topic in South Korea and she has had one rather ugly incident in her career where she was accused of singing about an inappropriate sexaul relationship. She in fact wasn't doing that. In her song ZeZe, which is based on a children's or young person's book that was popular, that was about the youngest child of a family who was basically ignored. Be creates a fantasy where an orange tree in his backyard befriend him and they talk to eachother. The young boy climbs up the orange tree and there t He is comforted by the tree. IU sing is from the prespective of the orange tree. And one of the lyric she is telling the boy to climb up her. Through the ignorance of those who don't know the story this was seem as a sexual reference. Which to me says more about the people making that claim than it does anything else. There are other lines which those people who were seeing things thatcwere not there also referred to. But when placed in context of a dialog between a tree and a young boy it is all quite innocent and exactly what you might expect such a conversation between an orange tree and the young child it is comforting to be. Just like her song Love Wins All, is about one thing and one thing only Love and as IU stated "it the struggle to Love when the world gets in the way." She doesn't, hasn't, dealt with controversial topics in her music. She does sing about the human experience, but wisely hasn't put her personal beliefs or interest out in the public forum, which is the opposite of bring people together and loving everyone.

IU has really gone full out with her last album. She is such a fascinating artist with a special talent for expression through different avenues. You have reacted to IU before and would know that IU's proclivity to use metaphors both lyrically in her songs as well visually in the MVs. FIrst of all, among all the amazing tracks this time, "Shh..." is patently my favorite with intended crafting of a seemingly confusing and mysterious atmosphere through the puzzling lyrics and the enigmatic editing of visual images. This work is clearly for adults. To answer your most urgent question, "L" is suggested to mean love and "F" friendship. IU said in an interview that she always wanted to write a song about her mother yet she is interested in exploring the relationship beyond the obvious. So the motivation for "Shh..." originated from the mother-daughter relationship. However, the scope of the song goes above just that. It has broadened to describe women who become part a woman's growth over the years. There are significant structural designs of "Shh..." to reflect this theme. There are four women with vocal parts in the MV (three singing, one narration) coming from different ages: IU in 30's, Hyein in her teens, Joe Wonsun in her 50's, and Patti Kim in her 80's. It's also helpful to know that the first verse sung by IU is a depiction of her view of her mother. The second verse, performed by Hyein, relates her experience with her friend. Joe Wonsun's part speaks about her perspective when seeing her idol she admires. Of course Patti Kim's narration of wisdom summarizes the impact women have on one another through their life. You are probably correct to suggest that IU plays the role of a mother as the key character of this MV. One can really go down a rabbit hole trying to identify and decipher all the references in this MVs. To wrap up this overly long post, I would just point out just one that you already noticed. Ttore sign "Moebius Strip" appeared twice in the MV, one early on, and another one towards the end. The second shot of the sign also reveals another line below the store name "Song of Mother's Subconsciousness". BTW, in case you didn't already know, Moebius Strip refers to a continuous surface with no beginning or ending, likely symbolizing the women's relationship from generation to generation. IU's said that this MV is constructed by intent to be confusing since the relationship in focus is inherently complex. It's too simplistic try to characterize with a single word. It requires time, patience, thought and introspection to digest adequately. Well, let me stop here and I am sure you can uncover more gem by yourself in time. Just want pass on some key points I learned from other smart IU fans here to help quench the burst of thirst for information after watching IU's "Shh..." like I did.

Thanks again for your reactions to IU's music. IU is one of kind, her Lyrics are most of the time deep, specially when it comes to the more serious songs. But now you can find deep thoughts even in silly fun songs. The idea of wanting to be flower during her childhood, but now realizing you may be whatever you dream to be even a Dandelion seed and be happy about it, and that's kind of the album theme as it seems to be in shopper too. There's also the happy sweet potato story which is also related to this message in short, there's a red ginseng in the middle of the field and she's so happy to be a red ginseng plant, but then other red ginsengs start to point out at here and then say but you are a sweet potato not a red ginseng, really! says the little plant, then I'm a happy sweet potato plant. To me it's a sweet and telling story, the little plant was happy no matter what other see in her. You can easily find IU telling that story in YT.

Thank you for reacting to IU, I always look forward to your IU reactions. Holssi is part 1 of a 2 parter telling us about her decision to conquer to areas. IU had considered retiring from Music leading upto her Golden Hour Concert. She even mentions this during her concert, saying she never expected to be performing on a stage this big in front of this many people. But getting ready for the concert she realized that she was suffering some burn out but got re energized. She also said during that concert that she thought the concert might be crowning achievement of her career and that she had thought their was nothing else for her to achieve. But then she stated that the concert might just be the start of something new. NOTE: kpop soloist have never really looked beyond the Korean and Asian markets. The only kpop soloist who have achieved any thing close to success have been a few who were members of groups who had been successful as part of a group in the US and therefore had built up a fan based. But the vast majority of them have had only relatively short term success in the States due most to their split attention. So in Holssi IU is telling us she is going to become a single seed (a kpop soloist) who is going to takeca different path (conquer the Western concert/music market in particular the US). It is interesting to note that both Holssi and Shopper were filmed in the US, making her intention crystal clear. She is going to take root on smooth ground (she is going to take the easy route) she knows it will be difficult but she will not complain, and she is going for the win. Even with the k-wave in music and drama's over coming the language barrier is extremely difficult, as IU has already experienced back in 2014 when she came to LA for the Kpop Convention. She said in an interview that she was frustrated because her English was limited and it was very difficult to communicate with her fans. She stated she would learn English before returning and she hired a English teacher. So Holssi IU tells us about her decision and that she is going for it big time. The line she says that she will even say goodbye sounds to much like her complaint in Eight when she says people just come and go as they please without even saying goodbye, to be a mere coincidence. While it's certainly is not a suggestion of anything gloomy here, in order to achieve success however, it will mean she will have to spend more time away from Korea and her Asian fans. Tweety bird is also a metaphor of IU's current and past career. Always returning to the safety of his cage, even when he leaves it to escape from Sylvester. The title Holssi at the start of the MV is a tribute to Tweety, as is the line about following the tiny leader. The Shopping cart is a direct reference to Shopper, as is the single dancer dressed in Blue. In Shopper (don't worry no spoilers) IU is standing outside a theater and their are Dandylion seeds floating around her, after which they are replaced by confetti. In Holssi she is going for the win and in Shopper she declaring Victory. I will pro ife more on Shopper if orcwhen you react to it. NOTE: IU's channel has released live concert clips of both Love Wins All and Shopper.

Just one word I know the rest. <- this line. Direct translation for that line is more like this "see one and up to ten". This might sound weird but its because this line came out from the Korean phrase "if you look/see one and know ten" 하나를 보면 열을 안다. It can be used for smart person who can figure more than they've been taught. Or it also can be used when you look someone's behavior you can tell what kind of person he/she is from his/her behavior. I think this time it has been used with first meaning.

omg why did I just discovered your channel Thank you for all your lyric breakdowns! I think some kpop songs really need a deep dig into there lyrics, and mamamoo is definetly one of them! Fun fact in this mv, the 4 universes at the very end are based on the concept of this album, company wanted all 4 members to imagine themselves and their life if mamamoo never existed. In all the universes nobody knows each other but they are still connected (Hwasa's dancer shot got Wheein's painting on the wall, Wheein is listening to Hwasa's album in her painter shot), and they believe they will always attract each other no matter how their destiny looked like. One of the other song Destiny (my personal fav of all time) wrapped up this concept and talked about how all the members believe they will meet each other in any universe because their personality always attracts like magnets.
