I prefer to connect the LED to an unused GPIO pin (GPIO 13, physical pin 33 in my case, as that has the nice benefit of having a GND pin directly on the opposite side) and add a device tree overlay in /boot/config.txt. There are quite some nice possibilities ... For a "heartbeat" power LED, add the following line: dtoverlay=gpio-led,gpio=13,trigger=heartbeat,label=powerled0 For a steady power LED, use the following instead: dtoverlay=gpio-led,gpio=13,trigger=default-on,label=powerled0 Or, my favorite, combined power LED and SD card activity: dtoverlay=gpio-led,gpio=13,trigger=mmc0,active_low=1,label=powerled0 Works nicely, at least with the current Raspberry Pi OS as well as OctoPi. Method gleaned from www.richinfante.com/2021/08/11/raspberry-pi-gpio-status-lights Possible triggers can be found in github.com/raspberrypi/linux/blob/rpi-6.6.y/arch/arm/boot/dts/overlays/README if you want to get reeeeeally adventurous :-)

Because this solution is not reliable due to floating value on pin 6 my raspberry shuts down on occasion by itself. For me it is not clear whether I need a pull up or pull down resistor and a cable connected to 3.3V. I woul epect me to have the switch placed between pin 6 and 3.3V and a 10k resistor between pin 6 and GND. Can anyone confirm or provide me the correct schematics?
