I respect your opinions, and know this video is super old, but if you still read my comment, I would like to share my opinions. I will also preface with saying that I really liked reading the whole story from start to end, though I also have some issues with it. I don't feel like I'm saying this because I want to defend Zun or anything, he's not immune to writing mistakes after all. One of the thing with the Touhou project, is that folklore and East Asian tradition is very heavily used. After all, Zun uses these folklore heavily in the world-building of Gensokyo and the creation of almost every Touhou character. The fact that fans knew that Kasen is most likely an Oni very early on in the manga series, before it was revealed, is because she is quite obviously heavily inspired by Ibaraki-Douji. And because of the Japanese legend of Ibaraki-Douji being defeated when her arm was sliced off with a powerful sword by the samurai Watanabe no Tsuna, it isn't random that in this re-imagined story, a re-imagination of the sword shows up. Kasen gave Reimu onigiris to eat up before the final battle, while the sword is called the onikiri-maru in this story, and the pun is most definitely intended and supposed to be a huge hint to Reimu on what to do, but she missed it. Given that Kasen is also heavily hinted to be one of the sages of Gensokyo in the story, and we know that the sages are always scheming to maintain some balance in Gensokyo, so when the ending is contextualised as just another of the sages' roundabout schemes coming to its resolution, it isn't really random or totally out of the blue, as anti-climatic as it was. I think that even with all the build-up of the finale fight, hints about how it is supposed to go down had been consistently dropped throughout the manga. In fact, there's probably about as much red herring as there were actual hints, so the ending still had some ambiguity leading up to it, while when the truth is revealed, it makes sense and doesn't feel like some lazy cop-out. Even during the final chapters building up to the fight, there are plenty of hints that is basically like saying "Hey, I know you are expecting some epic fight, but don't forget that this is all part of Kasen's scheme". In chapter 49.5, the good Kasen berates Reimu "Were you going to lose to those skeleton chumps?" (referring to Kasen arm's attack), and then says "If you're going to be like that, why did I bother bringing your body here", which is a huge hint that this entire fight was orchestrated by Kasen in the first place, and basically hints that Kasen is about to do something with the arm, and requires Reimu to "defeat her" after that. So when it is shown in the next few pages that Kasen is merging with her arm, us readers can deduce that this is all a farce and part of a greater scheme, but we don't know exactly what yet. Then the whole thing about the onigiri being intentionally given to Reimu as another huge hint. Merged Kasen even further berates Reimu by saying "Seems like you are not giving this your all, was the onigiri not enough?", which is another massive hint for Reimu and reader alike. A few pages down, Kasen once again reminds Reimu of the onigiri, asking "Did you make sure to eat the onigiri I gave you?" With the additional context of the sword used to seal Kasen's arm referenced in both the manga and the original folklore, the hints throughout the manga, and Kasen's role as a sage, I would disagree that the appearance of the onikiri-maru blade fragment and the reveal that it was just part of her plan is in any way a deus ex machina. I do agree that Tenshi's appearance was a bit of lazy writing, because she appeared just to literally spell out all of Kasen's hint to Reimu throughout the past 2 chapters, the classic writing faux pas of "show, don't tell". It would have been nicer for Reimu to have eventually figured it out herself. So I do agree that Tenshi's appearance in the final battle is a bruh moment and detracted from it. As for why I personally don't mind Komachi not appearing, it is because it has been consistently shown in the manga that Komachi and Kasen are quite close, especially when they are always exchanging friendly banter. Komachi is also shown to be quite good at reading people, judging by how she had to educate Kasen about Reimu's personality early in the manga. If anyone, I would expect Komachi to be the one to know Kasen quite well, especially with their frequent interaction. Given all that, Komachi knew from quite early on that there is no need for her to personally appear in hell to help Reimu, because she would have a rough idea that all these were just Kasen's scheme, and Kasen isn't malicious. Komachi knew the true background of Kasen throughout most, if not the entirety, of the manga, and judging by how she basically knew about whole arm thing in the epilogue without being present for the actual fight, I would be inclined to think that this interpretation is grounded. Now I'm just speculating that Komachi sent Tenshi with the knowledge that this is just all part of Kasen's plan, and as long as the plan goes accordingly, all will be fine, so Tenshi went to hell just to make sure that Reimu goes along with it. If it was up to me to re-write the story, I will only change it such that Tenshi would have just sat at the side the entire time watching Reimu to make sure she catches onto the plan and resolve it. Reimu would of course be confused, just like how she is in the actual story, and Reimu is shown to be really struggling against Kasen and extremely desperate because Kasen is strong AF. The whole time, Kasen is sending blows after blows at Reimu, but Reimu finds it strange that Kasen seems to be holding back somewhat (because Kasen's goal was never to kill Reimu), while good Kasen continues to try to drop hints to help Reimu out without alerting her arm. When Reimu looks like she was on the verge of giving up, Tenshi would get ready to step in, but Reimu finally managed to connect the dots, realised Kasen's intentions all along, and accordingly defeat Kasen on her own. Having other third parties help out Reimu cheapens it in my opinion. Reimu is kind of a fool, but she is also shown to be capable in times of need and figure things out on her own. It would have been nice to see her figure this out on her own, rather than had an external third party step in to show her the way. I 100% agree that the finale battle is anti-climatic and a "letdown", but if it makes any sense, I don't think it is a letdown in a bad way per se. I think it is all to common when we read stories, that we expect some epic resolution with some epic change to the characters after all that and for things to fundamentally change. It is so commonly expected and so commonly exploited, that I feel like sometimes it can actually lead to lazy writing. And from this, I feel like when an author goes the other route of subverting reader expectations, it can actually end up being more interesting, but of course it has to be done in a way that makes sense. If this anti-climatic ending of WaHH was written without all the hints sprinkled throughout, and without everything else being established earlier in the story, it would not make any sense, and it will be rubbish writing. But as I propose, I think that many hints have been dropped throughout, and it is still coherent story-telling, so the ending doesn't exist in a vacuum, and as such, it makes sense and the subversion of reader expectations worked well enough. So personally, I don't feel like the ending needs to be rewritten in some epic battle that will change everything. This is highly personal, but for me, I think the character development of the whole series revolves around the growing affection and relationship between Kasen and Reimu, and that is the true highlight of the story, and I don't care nearly as much for the Kasen arm plot. In the first volume, Kasen has been hinted to have visited the Hakurei shrine before the start of the WaHH story and lectured Reimu, since Reimu and Marisa had vague memories of her from prior as someone naggy. It isn't explicitly written, but I assume that Kasen was lecturing Reimu on how to be a good shrine maiden, since it is her job as a sage to ensure that the shrine maiden is proper to maintain the integrity of Gensokyo. But judging by how it has been very long since then, so much so that Reimu barely remembered Kasen at the start of WaHH, Kasen probably stopped visiting because she saw no need or want to. And in this story, Kasen once again comes back to annoy Reimu, because she needs Reimu to help resolve the trouble revolving around her arm. Kasen approaches Reimu once again, for a practical purpose, and it is mostly business and not personal. But throughout the series, their relationship really deepens, and they both seem to start genuinely care for each other and enjoy each other's company. If it was purely business, Kasen wouldn't have went out of her way to try and cheer Reimu up, help Reimu out for all kinds of random stuff, and worry about Reimu, beyond her original plan of putting Reimu in a spot to seal her arm. Likewise, Reimu faced a mental block in defeating the merged Kasen, until she realised that it was all part of Kasen's plan and she just have to seal Kasen's arm, not destroy Kasen as a whole, showing that she has also grown affectionate towards Kasen along the way. In the epilogue, Kasen really doesn't have any purpose as part of her job to visit Reimu again, but chooses to because she wants to and really likes Reimu, under this vague excuse of "she needs someone to watch over her" (which I'm sure Komachi saw through). And Reimu is glad to have Kasen back in her life even though she is very naggy. That's my take on the true essence of the series, and it is also why I like it so much. My problem with the epilogue is just that it isn't long enough to flesh out this relationship even more, lol.

ok, i did not know, or if i knew i forgot, that the gensokyo dragon god was supposed to be THE dragon god from the dragon palace myth. now that is worrying. especially because i did put together the fact that heaven and moon were in coohots with each other both from basic logic, the moon people are heavenly gods, and heaven in gensokyo is tied to it, even described as a keystone that could destroy the land if the higher ups wished to, but also tenshi and sagume share the same clothes patterns, and iku is literally a messenger of the dragon god, whether for real or the youkai originating from the belief the dragon god has messengers. about what happened to him, i think its safe to assume that the lord and ruler of the capital is still the same guy as usual, we are never told that the dragon god needs to be the ruler of the capital in its entirety. it makes more sense it is a big shot noble that has the two daughters we know of already. we were never told watatsuki sisters were the daughter of the main ruler after all. really cool idea tho, the whole staking their existence on peace and stuff, the best idea ive heard so far on the matter that actually makes sense if we are to take this information more deeper than face value! about suggestions, admittedly i have not watched all your touhou lore videos so i may have ideas and imputs you may have already used, but i have more than a few things i personally found out or theorized related to both new and old touhou! it may be a bit too much so ill list them what i recall of them at the moment and then maybe you can tell me which interests you to be more specific? hakurei's gatekeeper, or theres more to it? konngara's deal and what the panels and bombs in touhou 1 are the tecnique of going into otherworlds shin megami inspirations in pc98 yukari's hidden agenda with the moon capital dolls in pseudo paradise breakdown and the implications dotted everywhere else tewi's connection with the moriya shrine and what the lunar capital did there okina breakdown and the connection with kokoro, probably the tamest of the less talked about topics i may be forgetting a couple but this should the main stuff. i particularly am interested in what you think of the tewi one, since thats the one big thing that i am so far completely alone in having noticed that in my experience and i feel like more people should be talking about it, it makes me feel like im making this up or im going crazy about this plot point and seeing things that arent there.

I would say that there is no decline, it's rather "drunk cat's walk". Newer games feel more experimental. 18 and 18.5 were actually fun thanks to cards. Animal Realm was already mentioned in PCB Extra. Appearance of Misumaru was interesting, and music makes up for everything. Feel free to disagree, but not everyone has the same way of thinking.
