    • @songeraudio24
      @songeraudio24 Před 5 měsíci

      Sure, Dale. The power supply is variable between 9 - 12.5 VDC. The design is proprietary courtesy of Whammerdyne Heavy Industries, and you can read a little more about it here: songeraudio.com/products#ps1 The power supply doesn't produce much heat, and what is does is well-managed by syncing to the aluminum case. The field coil motor never becomes more than a little warm to the touch in the open baffle S2. In the S1, it's a good practice to just turn off the power supplies overnight and at at the end of listening sessions.

    Hm.. Your spider isn't linear right? Was it made intentionally, sir? PS Field coil cartridges are a snake oil for me. Why a filed coil is great is because its force depends on a power that amplifier uses (with some natural LP filtration of course). A current pulsates though an inductor coil depending on a sound level. Otherwise there is NO difference for a membrane coil what is a source of a magnetic field. Physicists have not discovered a new form of a magnetic field yet. And these talks about electron spins are for rich intellectuals.

    • @songeraudio24
      @songeraudio24 Před 5 měsíci

      The spider is actually quite linear. I can't comment on electron charge versus electron spin. While I have read that as well, I agree it may be irrelevant to the performance of the driver. The difference with a field coil is simply attributable to the permeability of the magnetic material, not anything new to magnetism. The higher that figure is, the stiffer the magnetic field, and in carbon steel or permendur that number is very high. Even when a magnet is very strong, as is the case with neodymium, the permeability is similar to ordinary ferrite and the accuracy of voice coil modulation suffers as a result.

  • @stephenfleschler9682

    An audio dealer friend of mine uses a field coil speaker. I haven't heard them yet. Does the Songer have a wide dispersion as a Von Schwikert or more restrictive, or as much as a Duntech, Dunlevy, Martin Logan, etc. which are highly restrictive to a single center seat? What I miss most is dispersion for multiple listeners. I always give at least one guest or my wife the center seat. The technology appears to be hugely successful with so much less engineering and manufacturing costs.

    Why is a fieldcoil-induced 1.7Tesla magnetic field in the voice coil gap better than, say, a 2.2Tesla one, induced by a neodymium permanent magnet? Your creation looks stunning and is a great achievement, as well as a work of art and tech. I absolutely love that spider and the leather surround. But a stronger permanent magnet, even with the drawback of the Barkhausen noise, may prove, overall, superior. Your "trampoline" theory is a little vague and unclear to me. Not to mention paper-cone break-up colorations! (Please don't say that washi is uncoloured). Having struggled for almost two decades with Lowthers, my conclusion is that they have to be dealt with, otherwise the sound will never take off, it will always be compromised.

    • @songeraudio24
      @songeraudio24 Před rokem

      Thank you for the kind comments, @Full Ranger! Even though electromagnetism may offer the greatest potential, it's only part of the story - lots of great loudspeakers in the world, and only a handful are field coils. Many use neodymium! In our driver, the materials, the soft suspension, the lightweight moving mass... each plays a part, as well. Cheers.

    what is the difference between the tesla rating and stiffness?

    • @songeraudio24
      @songeraudio24 Před rokem

      Hi Everard! A magnetic field may be very strong, but not stiff as it responds - neodymium is a good example of that. Another good analogy to illustrate the concept is a car jack. A strong jack can lift a lot of weight (tesla), but if it's sitting in mud, it sinks and slips as it lifts the car. The stiffness is the surface the jack is resting on. If it's sitting on concrete (high permeability), it will remain precisely where it is as it raises and lowers the car.

    • @everardwilliams2918
      @everardwilliams2918 Před rokem

      @@songeraudio24 Thanks Ken for the additional clarity. So it is not just about higher the tesla number. That stiffness is also a consideration. What is the unit measure and I wish that manufactures would report off of the data.

      @@songeraudio24 could this also be described as a type of temporary “decay” in the field strength under a specific “load” IE the movement of the coil due to the signal?

    • @songeraudio24
      @songeraudio24 Před rokem

      @@polkiju7 I don't think it could be described as a decay in the field, per se. Permeability is conventionally a property associated with the material of a permanent magnet, and it indicates the degree to which the electrons in that material are spinning in uniform alignment with one another, at least as I understand it. An electromagnet can at it's limit achieve saturation of the material, which in low carbon steel, pure iron, permendur, etc constitutes a very high number. What you're describing is a bit like parasitic inductance. But bear in mind, a degree in physics is NOT among my qualifications. :) My education is ongoing... a big part of what I love about this work.
