HIKING SANDY NECK NATURE TRAIL LOOP | CAPE COD | DATE DAY HIKE IN THE RAIN
On a rainy winter day at the end of December, Bud and I hiked a 5.5 mile loop of the Sandy Neck Nature Trail in Barnstable, MA on Cape Cod. It took us just under two hours to complete the hike, which is mostly flat, but rated as Moderate due to the sand dunes. We followed Trail 1 to the beach, hiked along the beach until we reached Trail 2, and then continued back along the Marsh Trail.
Some cool things about this hike:
There are little beach shacks hiding out along the Marsh Trail. They all seemed to be abandoned for the winter.
There are overnight options. Although we didn't venture to check out the five campsites or the lean-to, we did meet a backpacker huffing it along the beach after having spent two nights at a camp site.
Although we only hiked 5.5 miles, this loop can be extended up to 12 miles.
Some things to know:
With a permit, cars and trucks can drive on the beach, so just be aware. We were totally startled by the ranger's truck pulling up behind us on the Marsh Trail!
This trail is totally exposed. There is no tree cover. This wasn't an issue for us, as it was overcast and rainy, but something to think about for sunnier weather.

HIKING MAHANNA COBBLE | THE BERKSHIRES | HIKING WITH A TODDLER

We hiked the Mahanna Cobble Trail, a 3.1 mile relatively easy out-and-back, on a rainy November day. The trail itself starts out at Bousquet ski area. We were able to park right at the ski house, as it was before ski season started. Otherwise, you can park across the street. The trail is rated at Moderate and offers a view from the cobble that we weren’t quite able to appreciate due to rain and...

      @AdventuresinBackpacking Před 3 měsíci

      It’s not that weird. You wipe very gently and cautiously starting with a smooth rock or some green leaves when you get the chance, then move on to the hand. Only use one hand. The other is on the bottle of water. No cap. Rinse, wipe hand in dirt, rinse again. Repeat as often as you need. Then, put the water bottle down, grab sanitizer with your clean hand, and squeeze sanitizer into your hand. After that, pour some water and non-scented Dr. Bronner’s (just a small drop) on your bum area. That’s a little messy at first, the pouring of water. After that, it’s all done. No biggie. Just keep your pants off.

      If you want, I would maybe just pack two tissues per poop. The rest of it would be the hand system I just discussed.

    I know you touched on the sketchy parts, but just how sketchy are they? I have watched your videos, and it makes it seem like you could easily plummet to your death on a few sections (particularly Mansfield, like that one portion you guys took off your packs for). Now, my parents have both finished the AT (took a few years but they did finish in 2021, even with my mom having a new knee the last 320 miles), and I have hiked about 1,600 of it with them. We were thinking of hiking the Long Trail with a friend (so it would be me-37-and three people who are 70, 71, and 72). Is it pretty easy to die on this trail? Haha. I mean, somehow we made it through the AT without catastrophe, but I don't want to put them in a situation that is even scarier than the AT (such as Goose Eye, a few sections on the Wildcats, the Mahoosuc range in general, Katahdin, etc.). We want to have an adventure, but I don't want this to be our last one! And I know there are bypasses for some portions, but I have read they can be worse than the original trail!

    I just completed the first 100 miles or so on the LT north bound on a six day trip with my hound mix Maggie . She did awesome and loves being in the forest and camping out. I plan on returning later this summer or fall to complete. At what point does the really hard terrain start for a dog? The ladders and all. I plan on leaving her home for that part as I don’t want her to get injured. The first 100 were wonderful, only a hour or so of rain and really no mud. My feet never got wet even a little. Most of the thru or sections hikers we met along the way had started alone. If the question is, would I feel safe, then yes. I would feel very safe hiking the trail alone. There are so many friendly faces you meet along the way, and we never encountered anyone we felt was dangerous. The only sketchy experience we had was off the trail.

    Do you remember having any issues with sand? This section hike is on the lineup for me this year.

      There were a few sections through sand, but nothing significant. Have a great hike!

    How do you charge your phone and or keep your phone charged how long did it take you guys to complete it? Thanks again for the video

    • @AdventuresinBackpacking
      @AdventuresinBackpacking Před 2 lety

      We carried a portable charger for the phones- an Anchor 10000, which was more than enough. We kept our phones on airplane mode most of the time. This most recent NOBO took us three weeks to complete. Thanks for watching!

    What dates did you go? I'm heading up second week of May and wondering what weather to expect and flies...

    • @AdventuresinBackpacking
      @AdventuresinBackpacking Před 2 lety

      This year, we hiked late august. The flies were there, and headsets were occasionally required, but it wasn’t unbearable. We’ve been in early summer, and the flies were atrocious. And I’ve heard they’re pretty bad in May as well. I would expect em.

    I know there was no snow when you were hiking, but do you where crampons or spikes when it’s snow or ice?

    • @AdventuresinBackpacking
      @AdventuresinBackpacking Před 2 lety

      We do use crampons, spikes, or nano spikes when the conditions require it. Anytime from November to early May in NH, VT, or ME, pretty much expect to have spikes in your pack. It’s a must.

    • @AdventuresinBackpacking
      @AdventuresinBackpacking Před 2 lety

      There are vids we did where we did use spikes. See our videos climbing Camel’s Hump, Mt. Abraham, and Mt. Ellen.
