How to MIDI Learn Roland Fantom to Control DAW
Hopefully this video will help you guys get the Fantom locked into your DAW. Once you do this, make sure to create a default template so you don't have to do it all again every time you start a new song.

How To Play Piano By Ear
zhlédnutí 157Před 8 měsíci
I've spent a fair amount of my life trying to learn how to play piano by ear. It's been a long road, but I believe the One Scale Technique is ultimately the easiest to understand and practice. If you weren't born with perfect pitch, like me, then take this opportunity to think about your scales and theory in a whole new way!

I've had the Roland Fantom 08 for a few years now, and there are things about it that I just cannot live without now! This board is the greatest musical tool I've ever owned. I hope everyone who has one is as in love with it as I am!

Hey Great Video but can you show how to export this same track as when I try to export it just gives me a blank or empty track😅
For DAW integration and all that sequence stuff you dont neccesarily need A Fantom 0. A Mac Book or Laptop with a good audio interface can do the Job. But Man ...have you listen to the individual Brass Sounds and Guitars ?? I bought this keyboard Twice and sold it twice. And for one reason.........THE SOUNDS..... In the end its about the sounds. Those with the big samples. Should i buy the FAMOUS Fantom for podcast or Ableton ??? Take a listen to a Yamaha MODX+ brass and guitar and other sounds and you will hear what i am saying. Or maybe compare it with the yamaha PSR SX 600, 700, 900 sounds and you will not believe the difference... I have spend hours with the Fantom sounds and discovered that form every category there is only one sound .......let's say nice ... on very group of 30 sounds. Thats unblelievable but true in my opinion. On the MODX+ there is (Maybe) 1 bad sound on every group of 30 sounds within a category. This counts mostly for the BRASS and GUITARS. The last good Fantoms are the Fantom G and the Roland FA (for their sounds quality) What have they done with all the shakers and Doits and Fall effects on the Sax and Trumpets. All heve the same on the modulation wheel with a very ugly arpeggio like octave effect. If i could bring over all the MODX sounds (Quality) to the Fantom 0 (Or Fantom) It would be the BEST MACHINE EVER! One thing ...for use in the studio the sounds will fit outstanding in ANY MIX But not live on stage......
Idk man, I think the sounds are dope. Maybe you should get your ears checked huh
@@amackclassic6737 if you play only techno no problem! Dont even try Latin Guitar / Brass / or Trombones. As i Saïd i have The Fantom G and The Fa And i Will stay there untill Roland reshuffles the whole Machine with bright and inspiring sounds on these Categories
Same issue low mic volume while the keys blow out my eardrums
Where’s the funky?
Yeah my bad g, my Restream plugin that pushes my OBS to CZcams has a default title. I haven't changed it in awhile when I go live lol.
I have the 06 & a MODX 8 & could not live without either of them now
A basic question. How do you add reverb to a piano sound? Thanks.
I use MIDI learn to assign the rotary knob above each zone Fader on the Fantom. I'll demonstrate this in a video. It's easier than it sounds
@@amackclassic6737 Thanks.
How is your Fantom connected to your computer? Direct? Interface? Any latency?
via USB port
I connect it via USB to the computer as the Fantom itself is an audio interface. I have a SM7B connected to the Fantom via a 1/4in jack on the back. This allows me to control the DAW and the internal sounds simultaneously. I've detected no audible latency since I've been using it.
Awesome to hear you. I just got the Fantom-08 and am looking to do live DJ style sets. Do you find that ableton is essential for this or do you think its possible to do seamless performances just with the fantom-0?
The Fantom storage is limited, this is why I use the DAW. The great thing about the Fantom is that it is obviously mappable. I have a video or two demonstrating how I'm using the Fantom to remix and Mashup songs. I am considering getting a DJ Controller like the FLX4 so I can export my own stuff out of Ableton to then arrange via another controller more designed for that activity. I've seen plenty of people performing with just the Fantom and the Fantom plus Ableton. There's really no right way, there's just your way!!
Moog is sweet!
Yes!!
Which patch is this on the Fantom? Great sound!
0069: Future Sync Lead
Does Fantom 08 have polyphony issues? I saw people on CZcams saying that Fantom 06 and 07 have polyphony issues and have even demonstrated it.
I'm thinking about making a video about this issue. Here's the bottom line, if you do not load up a shit load of sounds in a patch, there are no issues. My fantom is a glorified live Looping tool in my studio so there are never any sounds running off the cpu of the Fantom itself, apart from the single zone Preset or whatever. I suppose if you wanted a 16 piece Orchestra split across all notes, maybe then you'll have an issue.
@@amackclassic6737 Does it have such issues when I, for example, play a backing track which has like 16 layers of orchestra. Because in the video I saw on CZcams, the dude played multiple layers of orchestral sounds. I need a keyboard for a symphonic metal band and am planning on having many layers, though not when playing, but rather when using backing tracks.
@@vojinljubisavljevic4036 It will probably have issues with what you need it to do. It's unfortunate, but if you've seen it demonstrated on video, then it's probably true.
Fandom 08 ???
Fa 06 thank you very much, I prefer it over the fantom
I love how are bodys, faces & souls become one with our synth and sounds...Im into it as well....Feel it. Great video
Really good video I understand stand your language love the cursing I thought it was me😂 but honestly you explained it so I can understand, thanks
Thx, short and on point. Is it possible to use mic and line at the same time?
Nope sadly
I just got a fantom as well. Can you please help me with the set up? I am not technical whatsoever. I plugged in a usb from my computer to the fantom, but it is not working when I try to use on garage band. I really don't know anything about workstations or even the set up process. I will pay for instructional help with set up.
Send me an email and I'll help you
Nicely done! I might have to spend a few $$$$ on GAS.
I’ve just bought the 08. Great keyboard but find the action very heavy. Would have preferred it slightly lighter. But the power of the keyboard and the tones are fabulous.
You'll get used to the action over time. I agree though
well, i figured out that the firmware needed to be updated, however, I've gone through like 7 flash drives, and formatted them on the Roland, but none of them would work to update the software, so I am assuming that I need to buy a specific USB drive. What is the name, brand, and size of the USB thumb drive you used??
I bought it from target and 2GBs I think.
Brother...NOBODY has this fix...I am diving in on a Fantom about a year older than yours. Wish me luck!
Thanks for saying that man! I hope your Fantom is working great.
Amaziiing !! I loved that voice soundd and the drums kicking in
We are just bought a fantom 08 and are excited to have it at home asap. Thanks for the review, man.
Have so much fun, I hope you love it
Absolutely wicked. Thanks heaps
Great video man, I really like how you clearly have passion about your fantom and music in general, it comes across in the video very clearly. It makes watching your videos way more enjoyable and digestible than all the other vids I've seen lately. Anyways I've had my Fantom for about a month now, and I still can't wrap my head around the sheer POWER these keyboards have..... We're about a decade away from keyboards with 15" OLED screens and having windows 10 with full DAWS on deck haha.
Each of us will make this board do what WE want. It takes time bc you're right, there's a lot of Workflows available. Take your time and discoveries will be made as you learn about the equipment.
Those pads are not for drumming, is that true?
What a nightmare
Truly the most frustrating thing in recent years 😆 🤣
Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. Really enjoyed it, best wishes .
idk if it’s cause it’s a condenser mic but I did the same thing and the piano knows and receives there’s a mic but when I speak into it there’s no noise and nothing
No condenser Mics on the 0. It's a line level input only. The big Fantom has XLR inputs, so for $2k more you can plug your condenser in 😆 go figure huh
Really nice, well done. Has a Robert Miles vibe .
Every time I buy any music hardware I 1) register the device 2) check for drivers 3) CHECK FOR FIRMWARE UPDATES
If this O version is powerful what would you call the fantom then for almost twices price ?
There's a little knob on the back next to the Mic input. Hope that helps. Else, it could be impedance issue.
all I wanted to know was if there an output on the Roland phantom 8 that will plug in to a tascam 32 SD recording system
1/4 stereo outputs, of course!
Thanks
Yes please I’ve been trying to figure out both DAW AL & LPX!!!
You play that Fantom 08 so nicely, keep it going in 2024
So, beauty!
Fantastic!
Wow, this is a real eye opener! I used to use a Roland D20 workstation synced to a 4 track portastudio. The only way to have them in sync was to start the track at the begining with no pauses or stops, so your audio tracks had to be right or else start from the beginning again. Yet I was way more productive on that setup than with Cubase and all the plugins etc. I have now. Maybe the Fantom is the way forward! Thanks for your video 👍.
The thing about the Fantom bro, is speed. It's very intuitive to use, I've had for a few years now, but it's great sitting down at it everyday.
@@amackclassic6737the only thing that concerns me, that some reviewers have mentioned, is the polyphony, and notes getting cut when there's a lot going on
@jelnet I've heard that too, but I'm not layering more than 3 sounds at once. I'm live looping with the Fantom, so once things are recorded into my DAW, resources are immediately freed up from the Fantom. Most people my age and below are using computers on stage too, so the polyphony problem really only applies to those using the Fantom as a standalone keyboard.
@@amackclassic6737 Cool, thanks for your help!🙂
I want to buy a Roland for composition, live without a daw (with the presets), to create too through a daw, with good rhodes, organ, grand piano, classic piano but I don't know what to choose between FA 08 and Fantom 08, I'm lost bro, can you help me ? 🙏😭😄
Does it have the classic dance music patches from the MC707?
This synth is a beast ! But I wanted to ask you a very controversial question, you may have already heard that the Fantoms have a problem (unexpected) with polyphony for such a top level instrument. What is your opinion and experience? thank you so much
I honestly never encountered a polyphony issue bc I do not use a lot of layering in my beat making. I layer in the daw when composing music, when I play live I'm just using one zone at a time.
@@amackclassic6737 Thanks !! I have the same experience with my Roland FA08, but people talks about. For sure it's an awesome workstation !!
I so wanna buy this board but that issue is freaking me out ...Im on the fents@@amackclassic6737
It is the best keyboard on the market. I love mine.
Same here.. same here
Dope
It s not really a proper audio interface man, LOL.... It get s some stuff done with most probably crap preamps, and not even XLR inputs. I know what you mean anyway :) I m torn between this fantom and the MODX+......I can t fucking decide, lol, geeezuzzz. Take care mate :)
Guitar is not line level, it is HiZ...You need a DI box dude
Thank you bro! I did some research in regards to this and I'm gonna get one to see if it will help.
@@amackclassic6737 It will :) You are welcome. Have fun mate :)
Have you tried the Yamahas MODX+?
I freaking love my Fantom EX like you love you fantom 0 !!! It is the great brother, and man .......Awesome !!!! Great video man !!! Enjoy !
Helped big time ! Thanks bro !
Are you looping audio or midi?
Both. The Fantom allows me to switch zones to be either audio from board or MIDI. It's really nice to be able to combine or isolate sounds from anywhere in this way! Thanks for watching!
@@amackclassic6737I’ve been using it with the scene volume turned down and recording audio. I like to play MIDI into Live and have it routed back into the F8 but I can’t do it this way if the scene volume is turned down which eliminates the doubling effect and allows me to use DAW effects in real time. Nice drums btw. Nice programming. Peace n hugs
@SunlightOfTheSpirit You should record yourself doing this so people can learn man!
