John Mayer performing a live/acoustic version of his song “Assassin” in Pittsburgh on May 5, 2022 (Cinco de Mayer) as part of the Sob Rock Tour. After finishing he said that was the first time he had ever played the song in that way. (This performance was at the suggestion of a fan’s sign.)

I was sad to see Tony Thaxton leave the band after the last record (and most of the drums on the album suffer because of it), but this is a fun one and has an unconventional pop-rock time signature.

It’s scary how this predicted the 2020 lockdowns, but here are some other very creepy coincidences: This movie came out the same year as a Nickelodeon cartoon short, which oddly enough also has the voice of Kath Soucie in it. People have claimed that that cartoon short predicted the World Trade Center attacks when one of the characters starts speaks gibberish, and at one point says “Apocalypse of 11, 9/11.”

One of the under appreciated things about John’s playing - and a large part of why he can make solo acoustic sound ‘fuller’ than anyone else, and manage to play Vultures and make it sound full, is his right hand technique. The dynamics and rhythm he can apply, and why all us other mere mortal guitarists struggle to get that ‘sound’.. it really comes across mostly when he’s playing acoustic sets. It’s all ‘in the fingers’ usually is said when talking about your playing hand (left for us righties).. get both hands working in tandem to get the nuances you want, and you get something near John.

I remember he said he didn’t relate to this song anymore and that’s why he hadn’t played it in a while, so cool to see him playing it again
Yeah I think it’s okay… there’s character development, at the end of the song wherein the character contemplated leaving but can’t and then complains that the woman is an assassin like him too so they’re both flawed. I think it’s because it reminds him of that playboy interview era.
The Eddies Attic version is a beast though, but quite difrerent.
