Great discussion. I am a university professor and an analogous thing is happening in my field. The proliferation of published work and its easy availability makes it less likely that people will spend the time it takes to get into the deeper more difficult stuff, which ultimately is much better on average. But it doesn't seem so at first, so in today's environment it it at a disadvantage. Anyway, I enjoyed your take on it from a musician perspective.
