What is Narrow Border Flood?
Narrow Border Flood (NBF) uses about 30 percent less water than the large pan flood irrigation commonly used in citrus and other laser-leveled orchards.
The technique requires little to no investment in equipment, and has been shown to produce higher yields and better quality fruit. Studies in the Lower Rio Grande Valley have shown that using NBF can even produce twice as much income per acre!
The projected annual average net cash farm income of $1,730 per acre for NBF is more than double that associated with traditional flood irrigation and almost 23 percent more than drip irrigation.
About Texas Agriculture Water Efficiency (AWE):
Over the course of 10 years, researchers, growers, and irrigation district personnel worked together to test strategies for maximizing water use in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The research study launched with an Agricultural Water Conservation grant from the Texas Water Development Board to AgriLife Extension and TWRI. The findings are in, support is available, and it’s time to implement and improve agriculture operations.

What is Surge Irrigation?
zhlédnutí 83KPřed 9 lety
Surge Irrigation has been proven to use significantly less water in major crops that previously relied on furrow irrigation. This technique uses a surge valve between two lengths of polypipe, and is a simple modification to furrow irrigation used in crops such as cotton, sugarcane and seed corn. Nearly 30 percent of the water used for irrigation in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas is consum...
Training Opportunity: Rio Grande Center for Ag Water Efficiency
zhlédnutí 238Před 9 lety
In order to test irrigation and water efficiency methods, a training and research facility was built. This Center replicates field situations where measuring water volume is critical-for both growers and irrigation districts. We offer training for irrigation district personnel, technology demonstrations for growers, and calibration of a number of different meter types. About Texas Agriculture W...
In-District Water Management Efficiencies
zhlédnutí 125Před 9 lety
The largest savings in water delivery systems are not on the farm, but in the canals and districts' systems. We gathered data on irrigation district water deliveries to find ways to improve efficiency to 75%. The SCADA system is a must have for irrigation district. This allows for water management "on the fly" with trained personnel instead of manually. About Texas Agriculture Water Efficiency ...
On-Farm Irrigation Efficiencies

We list the best irrigation options for growers to save water and money. With urbanization, water will become more competitive and expensive. This video explains our different tested methods for growing sugar cane, citrus, cotton, and others. With the use of surge valve, drip, narrow border irrigation and soil moisture measurement, water efficiency can be dramatically increase. Secure the futur...
The Future of Irrigated Agriculture
zhlédnutí 360Před 9 lety
Cities are growing and farmers are pressured to conserve more everyday. Our research found ways to be water efficient and increase profits. The education process must continue and state policy needs to focus on infrastructure changes in order to see ag water conservation on a wide-scale. Let us know if you agree in the comments below! About Texas Agriculture Water Efficiency (AWE): Over the cou...
The Need for Efficient Agriculture Water Use
zhlédnutí 678Před 9 lety
Water is the #1 issue for cities and farming communities alike. Now is the time for each sector to implement the water technologies and methods we have found to increase yields, save water, and raise profits. Implementing at an individual level, on a wide scale, will allow growers and cities to flourish. Let us know if you have implemented any of these options in the comments below. About Texas...

Hello, I want to learn something. How long is the furrow? Under these conditions, how long water reaches the end of the furrow?

How efficient is this type of irrigation, compared to drip/trickle irrigation, subsurface , or sprinkler irrigation?

@Tom McLemore Wasting fresh water resource for profit. Bad way to do agriculture, more states will face water shortage problem soon.

Where did you get the funny idea that surface irrigation is soil damaging. Spray (sprinkler) irrigation on a young crop is much more damaging - surface crust forming. All methods have non-uniform distribution, even drip. So, the optimal solution balances cost of water and labor and irrigation construction costs. Drip is expensive to install. Even drip can be inefficient if not well managed - need to put the right amount of water on at the right time.
