This is so raw and visceral! I love that they're singing/shouting in Te Reo Māori and recreating the Battle of Pukehinahina/Gate Pa with this music. This song accurately portrays the destruction and horror of that battle. Pukehinahina is in my tribal area (Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand). My ancestor Paraone Koikoi was wounded in this battle. Luckily for me he survived. But his son Wiremu Koikoi never made it. Another part of this story is that the Māori soldiers kept a covenant written up beforehand by Henare Taratoa, which included no mutilating of dead or dying enemies. Māori took water to their enemies that lay dying after the battle. My ancestress Matatu Te Monotahuna found 3 wounded enemy soldiers, mounted them onto her horse, and took them to the field hospital. They were just kids. When her husband asked about the blood on her neck scarf and bodice, she said she had found these soldiers crying like babies and had taken pity on them. When I found out about this story and asked myself how someone who had lost so much to the enemy could then turn around and assist the wounded, it changed my life. I vowed from then on to be a peacemaker. I owe that honour to my ancestors as they sacrificed everything so future generations could live xxx
